(1 Chronicles 17:1-15) 1After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, | 1Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, | 1Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, | 1And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; | 1When the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, |
he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." | 2the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” | 2that the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains." | 2That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. | 2the king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains." |
Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you." | 3And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” | 3Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your mind, for the LORD is with you." | 3And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. | 3So Nathan told the king, "Go and do all that is on your heart, for the LORD is with you." |
God's Covenant with David 4But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: | 4But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, | 4But in the same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, | 4And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, | 4But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: " |
"Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? | 5“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? | 5"Go and say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD, "Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? | 5Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in? | 5Go to My servant David and say, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in? |
I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. | 6I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. | 6"For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle. | 6Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. | 6From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling. |
Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"' | 7In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ | 7"Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?'"' | 7In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar? | 7In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven't you built Me a house of cedar?'" |
"Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. | 8Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. | 8"Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. | 8Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: | 8Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: 'This is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel. |
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. | 9And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. | 9"I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. | 9And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. | 9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest in the land. |
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning | 10And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, | 10"I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, | 10Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, | 10I will establish a place for My people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not afflict them as they have done |
and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. "'The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: | 11from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. | 11even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you. | 11And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. | 11ever since the day I ordered judges to be over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies." The LORD declares to you: The LORD Himself will make a house for you. |
When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. | 12When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. | 12"When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. | 12And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. | 12When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. |
He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. | 13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. | 13"He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. | 13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. | 13He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. |
I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. | 14I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, | 14"I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, | 14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: | 14I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others. |
But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. | 15but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. | 15but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. | 15But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. | 15But My faithful love will never leave him as I removed it from Saul; I removed him from your way. |
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'" | 16And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” | 16"Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'" | 16And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. | 16Your house and kingdom will endure before Me forever, and your throne will be established forever.'" |
Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. | 17In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. | 17In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. | 17According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. | 17Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David. |
David's Prayer of Thanksgiving
(1 Chronicles 17:16-27) 18Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? | 18Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? | 18Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? | 18Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? | 18Then King David went in, sat in the LORD's presence, and said, Who am I, Lord GOD, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? |
And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant--and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human! | 19And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! | 19"And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD. | 19And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD? | 19What You have done so far was a little thing to You, Lord GOD, for You have also spoken about Your servant's house in the distant future. And this is a revelation for mankind, Lord GOD. |
"What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD. | 20And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! | 20"Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD! | 20And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant. | 20What more can David say to You? You know Your servant, Lord GOD. |
For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. | 21Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. | 21"For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. | 21For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them. | 21Because of Your word and according to Your will, You have revealed all these great things to Your servant. |
"How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. | 22Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | 22"For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | 22Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | 22This is why You are great, Lord GOD. There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You, as all we have heard confirms. |
And who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? | 23And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? | 23"And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods? | 23And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods? | 23And who is like Your people Israel? God came to one nation on earth in order to redeem a people for Himself, to make a name for Himself, and to perform for them great and awesome acts, driving out nations and their gods before Your people You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt. |
You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God. | 24And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God. | 24"For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God. | 24For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God. | 24You established Your people Israel to be Your own people forever, and You, LORD, have become their God. |
"And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, | 25And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. | 25"Now therefore, O LORD God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken, | 25And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said. | 25Now, LORD God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised, |
so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, 'The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight. | 26And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. | 26that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel'; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You. | 26And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee. | 26so that Your name will be exalted forever, when it is said, "The LORD of Hosts is God over Israel." The house of Your servant David will be established before You |
"LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. | 27For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. | 27"For You, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, 'I will build you a house'; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You. | 27For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee. | 27since You, LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, "I will build a house for you." Therefore, Your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to You. |
Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. | 28And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. | 28"Now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant. | 28And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: | 28Lord GOD, You are God; Your words are true, and You have promised this grace to Your servant. |
Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever." | 29Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” | 29"Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever." | 29Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever. | 29Now, please bless Your servant's house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant's house will be blessed forever. |
