2	And the victory that day became mourning for all the people, for the people heard it that day, saying, “The king is grieved for his son.”	So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.”	And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.”
3	And the people stole away that day to go into the city, as the people steal away who are ashamed in their fleeing in battle.	And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle.	The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle.
4	And the king covered his face, and the king cried out in a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”	The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”	The king covered his face and cried aloud, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”
5	And Joab came to the king to the house, and said, “You have disgraced today the faces of all your servants who have saved your life today, and the lives of your sons and daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines,	Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, “You have today covered with shame the faces of all your servants, who have this day saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters and the lives of your wives and your concubines,	Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines.
6	in that you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. For you have declared today that not unto you are princes and servants; for I know today that if Absalom had lived and all of us today had died, that then it would be upright in your eyes.	because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. For you have made it clear today that commanders and servants are nothing to you, for today I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then you would be pleased.	You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead.
7	And now arise, go out, and speak to the heart of your servants, for by YHWH I swear, if you do not go out, not a man will stay with you this night. And this is worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”	Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the LORD, if you do not go, not a man will stay with you this night, and this will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”	Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you don’t go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come on you from your youth till now.”
8	And the king arose and sat in the gate. And all the people declared, saying, “There is the king, sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the face of the king. For Israel had fled, each man to his tent.	Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.	So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, “The king is sitting in the gateway,” they all came before him. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled to their homes.
9	And all the people were in a dispute throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king snatched us up from the hand of our enemies, and he saved us from the hand of the Philistines. And he has fled from the land because of Absalom.	And all the people were arguing throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies and saved us from the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.	Throughout the tribes of Israel, all the people were arguing among themselves, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies; he is the one who rescued us from the hand of the Philistines. But now he has fled the country to escape from Absalom;
10	And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in the battle. And now, why are you⁺ silent about bringing back the king?”	But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”	and Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”
11	And King David sent to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, ‘Why are you⁺ the last to bring back the king to his house, since the words of all Israel have come to the king, to his house?	And King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king?	King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: “Ask the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has reached the king at his quarters?
12	My brothers you⁺ are, my bone and you⁺ are my flesh. And why are you⁺ the last to bring back the king?’	You are my brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’	You are my relatives, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?’
13	And say to Amasa, ‘Is it not that you are my bone and my flesh? So may God do to me, and even may He add, if you are not the commander of the army before me all the days in place of Joab.’”	And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if you are not commander of my army from now on in place of Joab.’”	And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my own flesh and blood? May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you are not the commander of my army for life in place of Joab.’”
14	And he swayed the hearts of all the men of Judah as one man. And they sent to the king, “Return, you and all your servants.”	And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, “Return, both you and all your servants.”	He won over the hearts of the men of Judah so that they were all of one mind. They sent word to the king, “Return, you and all your men.”
15	And the king returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.	So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan.	Then the king returned and went as far as the Jordan. Now the men of Judah had come to Gilgal to go out and meet the king and bring him across the Jordan.
16	And Shimei son of Gera the Benjamite, who was from Bahurim, hurried, and he came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.	And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, from Bahurim, hurried to come down with the men of Judah to meet King David.	Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David.
17	And a thousand men of Benjamin were with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons, and his twenty servants with him. And they rushed into the Jordan before the face of the king.	And with him were a thousand men from Benjamin. And Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, with his fifteen sons and his twenty servants, rushed down to the Jordan before the king,	With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of Saul’s household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan, where the king was.
18	And they passed over the ford to bring over the house of the king, and to do what was good in his eyes. And Shimei son of Gera fell down before the face of the king when he had crossed the Jordan.	and they crossed the ford to bring over the king’s household and to do his pleasure. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was about to cross the Jordan,	They crossed at the ford to take the king’s household over and to do whatever he wished. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king
19	And he said to the king, “Let not my lord reckon to me iniquity or remember what your servant did wrong on the day that my lord the king left Jerusalem, that the king should put it to heart.	and said to the king, “Let not my lord hold me guilty or remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Do not let the king take it to heart.	and said to him, “May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind.
20	For I your servant know that I have sinned. And behold, I have come today, the first of all the house of Joseph, to go down to meet my lord the king.”	For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore, behold, I have come this day, the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”	For I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as the first from the tribes of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king.”
21	And Abishai son of Zeruiah answered and said, “In exchange for this, shall not Shimei be put to death, in that he cursed the anointed of YHWH?”	Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, “Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”	Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the LORD’s anointed.”
22	And David said, “And what have I to do with you⁺, sons of Zeruiah, that you⁺ should be unto me for an adversary today? Shall today any man be put to death in Israel? For do I not know that this day I am king over Israel?”	But David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be as an adversary to me? Shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day? For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?”	David replied, “What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? What right do you have to interfere? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don’t I know that today I am king over Israel?”
23	And the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore to him.	And the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king gave him his oath.	So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king promised him on oath.
24	And Mephibosheth son of Saul came down to meet the king, and he had not cared for his feet, and not trimmed his mustache, and his clothes he had not washed from the day of the going away of the king until the day that he returned in peace.	And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king. He had neither taken care of his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came back in safety.	Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.
25	And it came to pass, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”	And when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”	When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?”
26	And he answered, “My lord the king, my servant deceived me, for your servant said, ‘I will saddle for myself the donkey, that I may ride on it and go to the king, because your servant is lame.’	He answered, “My lord, O king, my servant deceived me, for your servant said to him, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself, that I may ride on it and go with the king.’ For your servant is lame.	He said, “My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said, ‘I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the king.’ But Ziba my servant betrayed me.
27	And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. And my lord the king is like the angel of God; and do what is good in your eyes.	He has slandered your servant to my lord the king. But my lord the king is like the angel of God; do therefore what seems good to you.	And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel of God; so do whatever you wish.
28	For were not all the house of my father as but dead men before my lord the king? And you set your servant among those who eat at your own table. And what right have I anymore to cry still to the king?”	For all my father’s house were but men doomed to death before my lord the king, but you set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right have I, then, to cry to the king?”	All my grandfather’s descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who eat at your table. So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the king?”
29	And the king said to him, “Why do you speak anymore of your matters? I have said that you and Ziba shall divide the land.”	And the king said to him, “Why speak any more of your affairs? I have decided: you and Ziba shall divide the land.”	The king said to him, “Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide the land.”
30	And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, let him take all of it, inasmuch as my lord the king has come back in peace to his own house.”	And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Oh, let him take it all, since my lord the king has come safely home.”	Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him take everything, now that my lord the king has returned home safely.”
31	And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim and went across the Jordan with the king, to send him away over the Jordan.	Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim, and he went on with the king to the Jordan, to escort him over the Jordan.	Barzillai the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and to send him on his way from there.
32	And Barzillai was very old, a son of eighty years, and he had provided for the king while he stayed at Mahanaim. For he was a very rich man.	Barzillai was a very aged man, eighty years old. He had provided the king with food while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.	Now Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.
33	And the king said to Barzillai, “You pass over with me, and I will provide for you while you are with me in Jerusalem.”	And the king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem.”	The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me and stay with me in Jerusalem, and I will provide for you.”
34	And Barzillai said to the king, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?	But Barzillai said to the king, “How many years have I still to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?	But Barzillai answered the king, “How many more years will I live, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?
35	I am a son of eighty years today. Can I discern between good and evil? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any longer the voice of singers and songstresses? Why should be your servant add a burden to my lord the king?	I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?	I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
36	As a little thing your servant will pass over the Jordan with the king. And why should the king repay me this reward?	Your servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?	Your servant will cross over the Jordan with the king for a short distance, but why should the king reward me in this way?
37	Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, near the grave of my father and my mother. And here is your servant Chimham. Let him pass over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your eyes.”	Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him go over with my lord the king, and do for him whatever seems good to you.”	Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.”
38	And the king answered, “Chimham shall pass over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your eyes. And whatever you request of me, I will do for you.”	And the king answered, “Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you, and all that you desire of me I will do for you.”	The king said, “Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever you wish. And anything you desire from me I will do for you.”
39	And all the people passed over the Jordan. And the king had passed over, and the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.	Then all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. And the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his own home.	So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and bid him farewell, and Barzillai returned to his home.
40	And the king passed over to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him, and all the people of Judah brought over the king, and also half the people of Israel.	The king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him. All the people of Judah, and also half the people of Israel, brought the king on his way.	When the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel had taken the king over.
41	And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why have stolen you away our brothers the men of Judah, and the king, and his house brought across the Jordan, and all the men of David with him?”	Then all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?”	Soon all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him and his household across the Jordan, together with all his men?”
42	And all the men of Judah answered against the men of Israel, “Because the king is near to us. And why is this that you are hot over this matter? Have we ever eaten from the king? Or has he ever lifted up to us?”	All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is our close relative. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?”	All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about it? Have we eaten any of the king’s provisions? Have we taken anything for ourselves?”
43	And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “Ten shares unto me are in the king, and also in David unto me is more than you. And why do you despise us, Was not my word first to bring back my king?” And the word of the men of Judah was sharper than the word of the men of Israel.	And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, and in David also we have more than you. Why then did you despise us? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?” But the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.	Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king; so we have a greater claim on David than you have. Why then do you treat us with contempt? Weren’t we the first to speak of bringing back our king?” But the men of Judah pressed their claims even more forcefully than the men of Israel.
