Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.1Ταύτας οὖν ἔχοντες τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ἀγαπητοί καθαρίσωμεν ἑαυτοὺς ἀπὸ παντὸς μολυσμοῦ σαρκὸς καὶ πνεύματος ἐπιτελοῦντες ἁγιωσύνην ἐν φόβῳ Θεοῦ
Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.2Χωρήσατε ἡμᾶς οὐδένα ἠδικήσαμεν οὐδένα ἐφθείραμεν οὐδένα ἐπλεονεκτήσαμεν
I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.3πρὸς κατάκρισιν οὐ λέγω προείρηκα γὰρ ὅτι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ἡμῶν ἐστε εἰς τὸ συναποθανεῖν καὶ συζῆν*
I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.4πολλή μοι παρρησία πρὸς ὑμᾶς πολλή μοι καύχησις ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν πεπλήρωμαι τῇ παρακλήσει ὑπερπερισσεύομαι τῇ χαρᾷ ἐπὶ πάσῃ τῇ θλίψει ἡμῶν
For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn--conflicts on the outside, fears within.5Καὶ γὰρ ἐλθόντων ἡμῶν εἰς Μακεδονίαν οὐδεμίαν ἔσχηκεν ἄνεσιν σὰρξ ἡμῶν ἀλλ’ ἐν παντὶ θλιβόμενοι ἔξωθεν μάχαι ἔσωθεν φόβοι
But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,6ἀλλ’ παρακαλῶν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς παρεκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς Θεὸς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ Τίτου
and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.7οὐ μόνον δὲ ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν τῇ παρακλήσει παρεκλήθη ἐφ’ ὑμῖν ἀναγγέλλων ἡμῖν τὴν ὑμῶν ἐπιπόθησιν τὸν ὑμῶν ὀδυρμόν τὸν ὑμῶν ζῆλον ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ ὥστε με μᾶλλον χαρῆναι
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it--I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while--8Ὅτι εἰ καὶ ἐλύπησα ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐπιστολῇ οὐ μεταμέλομαι εἰ καὶ μετεμελόμην βλέπω [γὰρ] ὅτι ἐπιστολὴ ἐκείνη εἰ καὶ πρὸς ὥραν ἐλύπησεν ὑμᾶς
yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.9νῦν χαίρω οὐχ ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἐλυπήθητε εἰς μετάνοιαν ἐλυπήθητε γὰρ κατὰ Θεόν ἵνα ἐν μηδενὶ ζημιωθῆτε ἐξ ἡμῶν
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.10 γὰρ κατὰ Θεὸν λύπη μετάνοιαν εἰς σωτηρίαν ἀμεταμέλητον ἐργάζεται δὲ τοῦ κόσμου λύπη θάνατον κατεργάζεται
See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.11Ἰδοὺ γὰρ αὐτὸ τοῦτο τὸ κατὰ Θεὸν λυπηθῆναι πόσην κατειργάσατο ὑμῖν σπουδήν ἀλλὰ ἀπολογίαν ἀλλὰ ἀγανάκτησιν ἀλλὰ φόβον ἀλλὰ ἐπιπόθησιν ἀλλὰ ζῆλον ἀλλὰ ἐκδίκησιν ἐν παντὶ συνεστήσατε ἑαυτοὺς ἁγνοὺς εἶναι τῷ πράγματι
So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.12ἄρα εἰ καὶ ἔγραψα ὑμῖν οὐχ ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἀδικήσαντος (ἀλλ') οὐδὲ ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἀδικηθέντος ἀλλ’ ἕνεκεν τοῦ φανερωθῆναι τὴν σπουδὴν ὑμῶν τὴν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ
By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.13διὰ τοῦτο παρακεκλήμεθα Ἐπὶ δὲ τῇ παρακλήσει ἡμῶν περισσοτέρως μᾶλλον ἐχάρημεν ἐπὶ τῇ χαρᾷ Τίτου ὅτι ἀναπέπαυται τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πάντων ὑμῶν
I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well.14ὅτι εἴ τι αὐτῷ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν κεκαύχημαι οὐ κατῃσχύνθην ἀλλ’ ὡς πάντα ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ἐλαλήσαμεν ὑμῖν οὕτως καὶ καύχησις ἡμῶν ‹ἡ› ἐπὶ Τίτου ἀλήθεια ἐγενήθη
And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling.15καὶ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ περισσοτέρως εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐστιν ἀναμιμνῃσκομένου τὴν πάντων ὑμῶν ὑπακοήν ὡς μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου ἐδέξασθε αὐτόν
I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.16χαίρω ὅτι ἐν παντὶ θαρρῶ ἐν ὑμῖν
