Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. | 1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. |
The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe | 2The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe. |
and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face. | 3And they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews! ” and were slapping his face. |
Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." | 4Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.” |
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" | 5Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man! ” |
As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him." | 6When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify! ” Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.” |
The Jewish leaders insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." | 7“We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” |
When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, | 8When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. |
and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. | 9He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from? ” But Jesus did not give him an answer. |
"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" | 10So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you? ” |
Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." | 11“You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” |
From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." | 12From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar! ” |
When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). | 13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic, Gabbatha ). |
It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. | 14It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king! ” |
But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. | 15They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him! ” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king? ” “We have no king but Caesar! ” the chief priests answered. |
Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. | 16Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. |
Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). | 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. |
There they crucified him, and with him two others--one on each side and Jesus in the middle. | 18There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. |
Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. | 19Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: JESUS OF NAZARETH, the KING of the JEWS. |
Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. | 20Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. |
The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews." | 21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’ ” |
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." | 22Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.” |
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. | 23When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. |
"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, "They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." So this is what the soldiers did. | 24So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did. |
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. | 25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. |
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son," | 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” |
and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. | 27Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. |
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." | 28After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” |
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. | 29A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. |
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. | 30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit. |
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. | 31Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. |
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. | 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him. |
But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. | 33When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. |
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. | 34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. |
The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. | 35He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth. |
These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," | 36For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. |
and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced." | 37Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced. |
Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. | 38After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus --but secretly because of his fear of the Jews --asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away. |
He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. | 39Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. |
Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. | 40They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. |
At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. | 41There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. |
Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. | 42They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby. |
