The LORD spoke to Moses: | 1The LORD also said to Moses, |
"Speak to the whole congregation of the Israelites and tell them, 'You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. | 2“Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. |
Each of you must respect his mother and his father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. | 3“Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the LORD your God. |
Do not turn to idols, and you must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal. I am the LORD your God. | 4“Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God. |
"'When you sacrifice a peace offering sacrifice to the LORD, you must sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you. | 5“When you sacrifice a peace offering to the LORD, offer it properly so you will be accepted by God. |
It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice and on the following day, but what is left over until the third day must be burned up. | 6The sacrifice must be eaten on the same day you offer it or on the next day. Whatever is left over until the third day must be completely burned up. |
If, however, it is eaten on the third day, it is spoiled, it will not be accepted, | 7If any of the sacrifice is eaten on the third day, it will be contaminated, and I will not accept it. |
and the one who eats it will bear his punishment for iniquity because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person will be cut off from his people. | 8Anyone who eats it on the third day will be punished for defiling what is holy to the LORD and will be cut off from the community. |
"'When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. | 9“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. |
You must not pick your vineyard bare, and you must not gather up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God. | 10It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God. |
"'You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen. | 11“Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another. |
You must not swear falsely in my name, so that you do not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD. | 12“Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD. |
You must not oppress your neighbor or commit robbery against him. You must not withhold the wages of the hired laborer overnight until morning. | 13“Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay. |
You must not curse a deaf person or put a stumbling block in front of a blind person. You must fear your God; I am the LORD. | 14“Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am the LORD. |
"'You must not deal unjustly in judgment: you must neither show partiality to the poor nor honor the rich. You must judge your fellow citizen fairly. | 15“Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly. |
You must not go about as a slanderer among your people. You must not stand idly by when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD. | 16“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. “Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am the LORD. |
You must not hate your brother in your heart. You must surely reprove your fellow citizen so that you do not incur sin on account of him. | 17“Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. |
You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you must love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. | 18“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. |
You must keep my statutes. You must not allow two different kinds of your animals to breed, you must not sow your field with two different kinds of seed, and you must not wear a garment made of two different kinds of fabric. | 19“You must obey all my decrees. “Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread. |
"'When a man has sexual intercourse with a woman, although she is a slave woman designated for another man and she has not yet been ransomed, or freedom has not been granted to her, there will be an obligation to pay compensation. They must not be put to death, because she was not free. | 20“If a man has sex with a slave girl whose freedom has never been purchased but who is committed to become another man’s wife, he must pay full compensation to her master. But since she is not a free woman, neither the man nor the woman will be put to death. |
He must bring his guilt offering to the LORD at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, a guilt offering ram, | 21The man, however, must bring a ram as a guilt offering and present it to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle. |
and the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the LORD for his sin that he has committed, and he will be forgiven of his sin that he has committed. | 22The priest will then purify him before the LORD with the ram of the guilt offering, and the man’s sin will be forgiven. |
"'When you enter the land and plant any fruit tree, you must consider its fruit to be forbidden. Three years it will be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. | 23“When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden. Do not eat it. |
In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, praise offerings to the LORD. | 24In the fourth year the entire crop must be consecrated to the LORD as a celebration of praise. |
Then in the fifth year you may eat its fruit to add its produce to your harvest. I am the LORD your God. | 25Finally, in the fifth year you may eat the fruit. If you follow this pattern, your harvest will increase. I am the LORD your God. |
"'You must not eat anything with the blood still in it. You must not practice either divination or soothsaying. | 26“Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood. “Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft. |
You must not round off the corners of the hair on your head or ruin the corners of your beard. | 27“Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards. |
You must not slash your body for a dead person or incise a tattoo on yourself. I am the LORD. | 28“Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the LORD. |
Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not practice prostitution and become full of lewdness. | 29“Do not defile your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be filled with prostitution and wickedness. |
"'You must keep my Sabbaths and fear my sanctuary. I am the LORD. | 30“Keep my Sabbath days of rest, and show reverence toward my sanctuary. I am the LORD. |
Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits to become unclean by them. I am the LORD your God. | 31“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the LORD your God. |
You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the LORD. | 32“Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the LORD. |
When a foreigner resides with you in your land, you must not oppress him. | 33“Do not take advantage of foreigners who live among you in your land. |
The foreigner who resides with you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. | 34Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. |
You must not do injustice in the regulation of measures, whether of length, weight, or volume. | 35“Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight, or volume. |
You must have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. | 36Your scales and weights must be accurate. Your containers for measuring dry materials or liquids must be accurate. I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. |
You must be sure to obey all my statutes and regulations. I am the LORD.'" | 37“You must be careful to keep all of my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice. I am the LORD.” |
