Then the whole crowd got up and took him to Pilate. | 1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. |
They began to accuse him, "We found this man corrupting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he is the Messiah, a king." | 2And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king." |
Then Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered, "You say so." | 3So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied. |
Then Pilate told the high priests and crowds, "I do not find anything chargeable in this man." | 4Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man." |
But they kept insisting, "He is stirring up the people with what he teaches all over Judea, from where he started in Galilee to this place." | 5But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here." |
When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. | 6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. |
When he learned with certainty that Jesus came from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time. | 7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. |
Now Herod was very glad to see Jesus, because he had been wanting to see him for a long time on account of what he had heard about him. He was also hoping to see some sign done by him. | 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. |
So he continued to question him for a long time, but Jesus gave him no answer at all. | 9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. |
Meanwhile, the high priests and the scribes stood nearby and continued to accuse him vehemently. | 10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. |
Even Herod and his soldiers treated him with contempt and made fun of him. He put a magnificent robe on Jesus and sent him back to Pilate. | 11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. |
So Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day. Before this they had been enemies. | 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends--before this they had been enemies. |
Then Pilate called the high priests, the other leaders, and the people together | 13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, |
and told them, "You brought this man to me as one who turns the people against the government. And here in your presence I have examined him and have found him 'Not Guilty' of the charges you make against him. | 14and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. |
Neither does Herod, because he sent him back to us! Indeed, this man has done nothing to deserve death. | 15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. |
So I will punish him and let him go." | 16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him." |
Now he was obligated to release someone for them at the festival. | 17 |
But they all shouted out together, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas for us!" | 18But the whole crowd shouted, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!" |
(This man had been put in prison for murder and for a revolt that had taken place in the city.) | 19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) |
But Pilate wanted to let Jesus go, so he appealed to them again, | 20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. |
but they continued to shout, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" | 21But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" |
Then he spoke to them a third time: "What has he done wrong? I have found nothing in him worthy of death. So I will punish him and let him go." | 22For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him." |
But they kept pressing him with loud shouts, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their shouts began to prevail. | 23But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. |
Then Pilate pronounced his sentence that their demand should be carried out. | 24So Pilate decided to grant their demand. |
So he released the man who had been put in prison for revolt and murder—the man whose release they continued to demand—but he let them have their way with Jesus. | 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will. |
As they led Jesus away, they grabbed Simon, a man from Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. | 26As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. |
A large crowd of people followed him, including some women who kept mourning and wailing for him. | 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. |
But Jesus turned to them and said, "Women of Jerusalem, stop crying for me. Instead, cry for yourselves and for your children, | 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. |
because the time is surely coming when people will say, 'How blessed are the women who couldn't bear children and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' | 29For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' |
Then people will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!', and to the hills, 'Cover us up!' | 30Then "'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' |
And if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?" | 31For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" |
Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus. | 32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. |
When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. | 33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals--one on his right, the other on his left. |
Jesus kept saying, "Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they're doing." Then they divided his clothes among them by throwing dice. | 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. |
Meanwhile, the people stood looking on. The leaders were mocking him by saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if he is the Messiah of God, the chosen one!" | 35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is God's Messiah, the Chosen One." |
The soldiers also made fun of Jesus by coming up and offering him sour wine, | 36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar |
saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!" | 37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." |
There was also an inscription over him written in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: "This is the King of the Jews." | 38There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. |
Now one of the criminals hanging there kept insulting him, "You are the Messiah, aren't you? Save yourself…and us!" | 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" |
But the other criminal rebuked him, "Aren't you afraid of God, since you are suffering the same penalty? | 40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? |
We have been condemned justly, because we are getting what we deserve for what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong." | 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." |
Then he went on to plead, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!" | 42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." |
Jesus told him, "I tell you with certainty, today you will be with me in Paradise." | 43Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." |
It was already about noon, and the whole land became dark until three in the afternoon | 44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, |
because the sun had stopped shining, and the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two. | 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. |
Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit." After he said this, he breathed his last. | 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. |
When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "This man certainly was righteous!" | 47The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man." |
When all the crowds who had come together for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they beat their chests and left. | 48When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. |
But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance watching these things. | 49But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. |
Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and righteous man— | 50Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, |
he had not voted for their plan and action—from the Jewish town of Arimathea; and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. | 51who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. |
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. | 52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body. |
Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut in the rock, in which no one had yet been laid. | 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. |
It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was just beginning. | 54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. |
So the women who had come with Jesus from Galilee, following close behind, saw the tomb and how his body was laid. | 55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. |
Then they went back and prepared spices and perfumes, and on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. | 56Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. |
