But at early dawn on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
but when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were puzzling over this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly stood beside them. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
While the women remained terrified, bowing their faces to the ground, the men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is living? 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee: 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.'"7The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "
Then the women remembered Jesus' words. 8Then they remembered his words.
They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others. 9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
The women who told the apostles about it were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
But what they said seemed nonsense to them, so they did not believe them. 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. He stooped down and saw only the linen cloths. Then he went home, wondering about what had happened. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
On the same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia from Jerusalem. 13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened, Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them, 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.16but they were kept from recognizing him.
He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you're walking along?" They stood still and looked gloomy.17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast.
The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened there in the past few days?"18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?"
He asked them, "What things?" They answered him, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people, 19"What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified. 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred. 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us. They were at the tomb early this morning 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
and didn't find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive. 23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn't see him."24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus."
Then Jesus told them, "O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
The Messiah had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn't he?" 26Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they came near the village where the two men were headed, Jesus acted as though he were going farther. 28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.
But they strongly urged him, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone." So he went in to stay with them.29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
Then they asked each other, "Our hearts kept burning within us as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn't they?"32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and their companions all together. 33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
They kept saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!" 34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
Then the two men began to tell what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him when he broke the bread in pieces.35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
While they were all talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and told them, "Peace be with you." 36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost. 37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
But Jesus told them, "What's frightening you? And why are you doubting? 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
Look at my hands and my feet, because it's really me. Touch me and look at me, because a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
Even though they were still skeptical due to their joy and astonishment, Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"41And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
and he took it and ate it in their presence. 43and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Then he told them, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures. 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
He told them, "This is how it is written: the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things. 48You are witnesses of these things.
I am sending to you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Later, he led them out as far as Bethany, lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. 52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
They were continually in the Temple, blessing God. 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
