But at early dawn on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
but when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were puzzling over this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly stood beside them. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
While the women remained terrified, bowing their faces to the ground, the men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is living? 5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee: 6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.'"7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Then the women remembered Jesus' words. 8And they remembered his words,
They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others. 9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
The women who told the apostles about it were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
But what they said seemed nonsense to them, so they did not believe them. 11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. He stooped down and saw only the linen cloths. Then he went home, wondering about what had happened. 12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
On the same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia from Jerusalem. 13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place. 14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened, Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them, 15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you're walking along?" They stood still and looked gloomy.17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened there in the past few days?"18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
He asked them, "What things?" They answered him, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people, 19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified. 20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred. 21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us. They were at the tomb early this morning 22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
and didn't find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive. 23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn't see him."24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
Then Jesus told them, "O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
The Messiah had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn't he?" 26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
As they came near the village where the two men were headed, Jesus acted as though he were going farther. 28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
But they strongly urged him, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone." So he went in to stay with them.29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them. 30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Then they asked each other, "Our hearts kept burning within us as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn't they?"32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and their companions all together. 33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
They kept saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!" 34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Then the two men began to tell what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him when he broke the bread in pieces.35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
While they were all talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and told them, "Peace be with you." 36And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost. 37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
But Jesus told them, "What's frightening you? And why are you doubting? 38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, because it's really me. Touch me and look at me, because a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.40And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
Even though they were still skeptical due to their joy and astonishment, Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
and he took it and ate it in their presence. 43And he took it, and did eat before them.
Then he told them, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures. 45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
He told them, "This is how it is written: the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things. 48And ye are witnesses of these things.
I am sending to you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Later, he led them out as far as Bethany, lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 50And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. 52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
They were continually in the Temple, blessing God. 53And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
