In the beginning, the Word existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. | 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. |
He existed in the beginning with God. | 2The same was in the beginning with God. |
Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made. | 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. |
In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity. | 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. |
And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out. | 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. |
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. | 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. |
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe because of him. | 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. |
John was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. | 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. |
This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world. | 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. |
He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him. | 10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. |
He came to his own creation, yet his own people did not receive him. | 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. |
However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children, | 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: |
who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man's desire, but from the will of God. | 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. |
The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father's unique Son, who is full of grace and truth. | 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. |
John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'" | 15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. |
We have all received one gracious gift after another from his abundance, | 16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. |
because while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus the Messiah. | 17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. |
No one has ever seen God. The unique God, who is close to the Father's side, has revealed him. | 18No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. |
This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and descendants of Levi to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" | 19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? |
He spoke openly and, remaining true to himself, admitted, "I am not the Messiah." | 20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. |
So they asked him, "Well then, are you Elijah?" John said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." | 21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. |
"Who are you?" they asked him. "We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" | 22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? |
He replied, "I am '…a voice crying out in the wilderness, "Prepare the Lord's highway,"' as the prophet Isaiah said." | 23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. |
Now those men had been sent from the Pharisees. | 24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. |
They asked him, "Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?" | 25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? |
John answered them, "I am baptizing with water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know, | 26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; |
the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie." | 27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. |
This happened in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. | 28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. |
The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! | 29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. |
This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks above me, because he existed before me.' | 30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. |
I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel." | 31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. |
John also testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. | 32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. |
I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The person on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' | 33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. |
I have seen this and have testified that this is the Son of God." | 34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. |
The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples. | 35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; |
As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" | 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! |
When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. | 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. |
But when Jesus turned around and saw them following, he asked them, "What are you looking for?" They asked him, "Rabbi," (which is translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?" | 38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? |
He told them, "Come and see!" So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. | 39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. |
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. | 40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. |
The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, "We have found the Anointed One!" (which is translated "Messiah"). | 41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. |
He led Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him intently and said, "You are Simon, John's son. You will be called Cephas!" (which is translated "Peter"). | 42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. |
The next day, Jesus decided to go away to Galilee, where he found Philip and told him, "Follow me." | 43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. |
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. | 44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. |
Philip found Nathaniel and told him, "We have found the man about whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth." | 45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. |
Nathaniel asked him, "From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?" Philip told him, "Come and see!" | 46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. |
Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said about him, "Look, a genuine Israeli, in whom there is no deceit!" | 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! |
Nathaniel asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you." | 48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. |
Nathaniel replied to him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" | 49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. |
Jesus told him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that." | 50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. |
Then he told him, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man." | 51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. |
