International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
But at early dawn on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
but when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were puzzling over this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly stood beside them. 4While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
While the women remained terrified, bowing their faces to the ground, the men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is living? 5And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee: 6He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.'"7that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
Then the women remembered Jesus' words. 8And they remembered his words,
They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others. 9and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
The women who told the apostles about it were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some others. 10Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles,
But what they said seemed nonsense to them, so they did not believe them. 11but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. He stooped down and saw only the linen cloths. Then he went home, wondering about what had happened. 12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
On the same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia from Jerusalem. 13That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,
They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place. 14and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened, Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them, 15While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you're walking along?" They stood still and looked gloomy.17And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.
The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened there in the past few days?"18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
He asked them, "What things?" They answered him, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people, 19And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified. 20and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us. They were at the tomb early this morning 22Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,
and didn't find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive. 23and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn't see him."24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
Then Jesus told them, "O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
The Messiah had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn't he?" 26Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
As they came near the village where the two men were headed, Jesus acted as though he were going farther. 28So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther,
But they strongly urged him, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone." So he went in to stay with them.29but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.
While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them. 30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
Then they asked each other, "Our hearts kept burning within us as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn't they?"32They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and their companions all together. 33And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,
They kept saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!" 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two men began to tell what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him when he broke the bread in pieces.35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
While they were all talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and told them, "Peace be with you." 36As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”
They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost. 37But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.
But Jesus told them, "What's frightening you? And why are you doubting? 38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, because it's really me. Touch me and look at me, because a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones as you see that I have." 39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
Even though they were still skeptical due to their joy and astonishment, Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"41And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
and he took it and ate it in their presence. 43and he took it and ate before them.
Then he told them, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."44Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures. 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
He told them, "This is how it is written: the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 46and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 47and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things. 48You are witnesses of these things.
I am sending to you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Later, he led them out as far as Bethany, lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 50And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.51While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. 52And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
They were continually in the Temple, blessing God. 53and were continually in the temple blessing God.
