He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. | 1Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. |
And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? | 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. "Where did this man get all these things?" they asked. "What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands! |
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. | 3This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him. |
And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” | 4Jesus had been telling them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own home." |
And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. | 5He couldn't perform a miracle there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. |
And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. | 6He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around to the villages and continued teaching. |
And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. | 7He called the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits. |
He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— | 8He instructed them to take nothing along on the trip except a walking stick—no bread, no traveling bag, nothing in their moneybag. |
but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. | 9They could wear sandals but not take along an extra shirt. |
And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. | 10He told them repeatedly, "Whenever you go into a home, stay there until you leave that place. |
And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” | 11If any place will not welcome you and the people refuse to listen to you, when you leave, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them." |
So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. | 12So they went and preached that people should repent. |
And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. | 13They also kept driving out many demons and anointing with oil many who were sick, and healing them. |
King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” | 14King Herod heard about this, because Jesus' name had become well-known. He was saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That's why he is able to do these miracles." |
But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” | 15Others were saying, "He is Elijah." Still others were saying, "He is a prophet like one of the other prophets." |
But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” | 16But when Herod heard about it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised," |
For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. | 17because Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom Herod had married. |
For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” | 18John had been telling Herod, "It's not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." |
And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, | 19So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she couldn't do it |
for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. | 20because Herod was afraid of John. He knew that John was a righteous and holy man, and so he protected him. Whenever he listened to John, he did much of what he said. In fact, he liked listening to him. |
But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. | 21An opportunity came during Herod's birthday celebration, when he gave a banquet for his top officials, military officers, and the most important people of Galilee. |
For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” | 22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. So the king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." |
And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” | 23He swore with an oath to her, "I'll give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom." |
And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” | 24So she went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother replied, "The head of John the Baptist." |
And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” | 25Immediately the girl hurried back to the king with her request, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." |
And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. | 26The king was deeply saddened, yet because of his oaths and his guests he was reluctant to refuse her. |
And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison | 27So without delay the king sent a soldier and ordered him to bring John's head. The soldier went and beheaded him in prison. |
and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. | 28Then he brought John's head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. |
When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. | 29When John's disciples heard about this, they came and carried off his body and laid it in a tomb. |
The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. | 30The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. |
And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. | 31He told them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest for a while," because so many people were coming and going that they didn't even have time to eat. |
And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. | 32So they went away in a boat to a deserted place by themselves. |
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. | 33But when many people saw them leave and recognized them, they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. |
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. | 34When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things. |
And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. | 35When it was quite late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. |
Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” | 36Send the crowds away so that they can go to the neighboring farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat." |
But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” | 37But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They asked him, "Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?" |
And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” | 38He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and see." They found out and told him, "Five loaves and two fish." |
Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. | 39Then he ordered them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. |
So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. | 40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. |
And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. | 41Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. |
And they all ate and were satisfied. | 42All of them ate and were filled. |
And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. | 43Then the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of leftover bread and fish. |
And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. | 44There were 5,000 men who had eaten the loaves. |
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. | 45Jesus immediately had his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him, while he sent the crowd away. |
And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. | 46After saying goodbye to them, he went up on a hillside to pray. |
And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. | 47When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, while he was alone on the land. |
And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, | 48He saw that his disciples were straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he came to them, walking on the sea. He intended to go up right beside them, |
but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, | 49but when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and began to scream. |
for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” | 50All of them saw him and were terrified. Immediately he told them, "Have courage! It's me. Stop being afraid!" |
And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, | 51Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were utterly astounded, |
for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. | 52because they didn't understand the significance of the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened. |
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. | 53When they had crossed over, they came ashore at Gennesaret and anchored the boat. |
And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him | 54As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus. |
and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. | 55They ran all over the countryside and began carrying the sick on their mats to any place where they heard he was. |
And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. | 56Wherever he went, whether into villages, towns, or farms, people would place their sick in the marketplaces and beg him to let them touch even the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was healed. |
