At that time Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, all the tribal heads and the ancestral leaders of the Israelites before him at Jerusalem in order to bring the ark of the LORD's covenant from the city of David, that is Zion.1Then Solomon convened in Jerusalem Israel's elders, all the leaders of the Israelite tribes and families, so they could witness the transferal of the ark of the LORD's covenant from the city of David (that is, Zion).
So all the men of Israel were assembled in the presence of King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, which is the seventh month, at the festival.2All the men of Israel assembled before King Solomon during the festival in the month Ethanim (the seventh month).
All the elders of Israel came, and the priests picked up the ark.3When all Israel's elders had arrived, the priests lifted the ark.
The priests and the Levites brought the ark of the LORD, the tent of meeting, and the holy utensils that were in the tent.4The priests and Levites carried the ark of the LORD, the tent of meeting, and all the holy items in the tent.
King Solomon and the entire congregation of Israel, who had gathered around him and were with him in front of the ark, were sacrificing sheep, goats, and cattle that could not be counted or numbered, because there were so many.5Now King Solomon and all the Israelites who had assembled with him went on ahead of the ark and sacrificed more sheep and cattle than could be counted or numbered.
The priests brought the ark of the LORD's covenant to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the temple, to the most holy place beneath the wings of the cherubim.6The priests brought the ark of the LORD's covenant to its assigned place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, in the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubs.
For the cherubim were spreading their wings over the place of the ark, so that the cherubim covered the ark and its poles from above.7The cherubs' wings extended over the place where the ark sat; the cherubs overshadowed the ark and its poles.
The poles were so long that their ends were seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary, but they were not seen from outside the sanctuary; they are still there today.8The poles were so long their ends were visible from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen from beyond that point. They have remained there to this very day.
Nothing was in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had put there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt.9There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed there in Horeb. It was there that the LORD made an agreement with the Israelites after he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
When the priests came out of the holy place, the cloud filled the LORD's temple,10Once the priests left the holy place, a cloud filled the LORD's temple.
and because of the cloud, the priests were not able to continue ministering, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple.11The priests could not carry out their duties because of the cloud; the LORD's glory filled his temple.
Then Solomon said: The LORD said that he would dwell in total darkness.12Then Solomon said, "The LORD has said that he lives in thick darkness.
I have indeed built an exalted temple for you, a place for your dwelling forever.13O LORD, truly I have built a lofty temple for you, a place where you can live permanently."
The king turned around and blessed the entire congregation of Israel while they were standing.14Then the king turned around and pronounced a blessing over the whole Israelite assembly as they stood there.
He said: Blessed be the LORD God of Israel! He spoke directly to my father David, and he has fulfilled the promise by his power. He said,15He said, "The LORD God of Israel is worthy of praise because he has fulfilled what he promised my father David.
"Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city to build a temple in among any of the tribes of Israel, so that my name would be there. But I have chosen David to rule my people Israel."16He told David, 'Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from all the tribes of Israel to build a temple in which to live. But I have chosen David to lead my people Israel.'
My father David had his heart set on building a temple for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.17Now my father David had a strong desire to build a temple to honor the LORD God of Israel.
But the LORD said to my father David, "Since your heart was set on building a temple for my name, you have done well to have this desire.18The LORD told my father David, 'It is right for you to have a strong desire to build a temple to honor me.
Yet you are not the one to build it; instead, your son, your own offspring, will build it for my name."19But you will not build the temple; your very own son will build the temple for my honor.'
The LORD has fulfilled what he promised. I have taken the place of my father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised. I have built the temple for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.20The LORD has kept the promise he made. I have taken my father David's place and have occupied the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised. I have built this temple for the honor of the LORD God of Israel
I have provided a place there for the ark, where the LORD's covenant is that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.21and set up in it a place for the ark containing the covenant the LORD made with our ancestors when he brought them out of the land of Egypt."
Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the entire congregation of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven.22Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the entire assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward the sky.
He said: LORD God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below, who keeps the gracious covenant with your servants who walk before you with all their heart.23He prayed: "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You maintain covenantal loyalty to your servants who obey you with sincerity.
You have kept what you promised to your servant, my father David. You spoke directly to him and you fulfilled your promise by your power as it is today.24You have kept your word to your servant, my father David; this very day you have fulfilled what you promised.
Therefore, LORD God of Israel, keep what you promised to your servant, my father David: You will never fail to have a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take care to walk before me as you have walked before me.25Now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant, my father David, when you said, 'You will never fail to have a successor ruling before me on the throne of Israel, provided that your descendants watch their step and serve me as you have done.'
Now LORD God of Israel, please confirm what you promised to your servant, my father David.26Now, O God of Israel, may the promise you made to your servant, my father David, be realized.
But will God indeed live on earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain you, much less this temple I have built.27"God does not really live on the earth! Look, if the sky and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this temple I have built!
Listen to your servant's prayer and his petition, LORD my God, so that you may hear the cry and the prayer that your servant prays before you today,28But respond favorably to your servant's prayer and his request for help, O LORD my God. Answer the desperate prayer your servant is presenting to you today.
so that your eyes may watch over this temple night and day, toward the place where you said, "My name will be there," and so that you may hear the prayer that your servant prays toward this place.29Night and day may you watch over this temple, the place where you promised you would live. May you answer your servant's prayer for this place.
Hear the petition of your servant and your people Israel, which they pray toward this place. May you hear in your dwelling place in heaven. May you hear and forgive.30Respond to the request of your servant and your people Israel for this place. Hear from inside your heavenly dwelling place and respond favorably.
When a man sins against his neighbor and is forced to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before your altar in this temple,31"When someone is accused of sinning against his neighbor and the latter pronounces a curse on the alleged offender before your altar in this temple, be willing to forgive the accused if the accusation is false.
may you hear in heaven and act. May you judge your servants, condemning the wicked man by bringing what he has done on his own head and providing justice for the righteous by rewarding him according to his righteousness.32Listen from heaven and make a just decision about your servants' claims. Condemn the guilty party, declare the other innocent, and give both of them what they deserve.
When your people Israel are defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against you, and they return to you and praise your name, and they pray and plead with you for mercy in this temple,33"The time will come when your people Israel are defeated by an enemy because they sinned against you. If they come back to you, renew their allegiance to you, and pray for your help in this temple,
may you hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel. May you restore them to the land you gave their ancestors.34then listen from heaven, forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.
When the skies are shut and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you, and they pray toward this place and praise your name, and they turn from their sins because you are afflicting them,35"The time will come when the skies are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, and turn away from their sin because you punish them,
may you hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel, so that you may teach them the good way they should walk in. May you send rain on your land that you gave your people for an inheritance.36then listen from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Certainly you will then teach them the right way to live and send rain on your land that you have given your people to possess.
When there is famine in the land, when there is pestilence, when there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper, when their enemy besieges them in the land and its cities, when there is any plague or illness,37"The time will come when the land suffers from a famine, a plague, blight and disease, or a locust invasion, or when their enemy lays siege to the cities of the land, or when some other type of plague or epidemic occurs.
every prayer or petition that any person or that all your people Israel may have--they each know their own affliction--as they spread out their hands toward this temple,38When all your people Israel pray and ask for help, as they acknowledge their pain and spread out their hands toward this temple,
may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and may you forgive, act, and give to everyone according to all their ways, since you know each heart, for you alone know every human heart,39then listen from your heavenly dwelling place, forgive their sin, and act favorably toward each one based on your evaluation of his motives. (Indeed you are the only one who can correctly evaluate the motives of all people.)
so that they may fear you all the days they live on the land you gave our ancestors.40Then they will obey you throughout their lifetimes as they live on the land you gave to our ancestors.
Even for the foreigner who is not of your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name--41"Foreigners, who do not belong to your people Israel, will come from a distant land because of your reputation.
for they will hear of your great name, strong hand, and outstretched arm, and will come and pray toward this temple--42When they hear about your great reputation and your ability to accomplish mighty deeds, they will come and direct their prayers toward this temple.
may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and do according to all the foreigner asks. Then all peoples of earth will know your name, to fear you as your people Israel do and to know that this temple I have built bears your name.43Then listen from your heavenly dwelling place and answer all the prayers of the foreigners. Then all the nations of the earth will acknowledge your reputation, obey you like your people Israel do, and recognize that this temple I built belongs to you.
When your people go out to fight against their enemies, wherever you send them, and they pray to the LORD in the direction of the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your name,44"When you direct your people to march out and fight their enemies, and they direct their prayers to the LORD toward his chosen city and this temple I built for your honor,
may you hear their prayer and petition in heaven and uphold their cause.45then listen from heaven to their prayers for help and vindicate them.
When they sin against you--for there is no one who does not sin--and you are angry with them and hand them over to the enemy, and their captors deport them to the enemy's country--whether distant or nearby--46"The time will come when your people will sin against you (for there is no one who is sinless!) and you will be angry with them and deliver them over to their enemies, who will take them as prisoners to their own land, whether far away or close by.
and when they come to their senses in the land where they were deported and repent and petition you in their captors' land: "We have sinned and done wrong; we have been wicked,"47When your people come to their senses in the land where they are held prisoner, they will repent and beg for your mercy in the land of their imprisonment, admitting, 'We have sinned and gone astray; we have done evil.'
and when they return to you with all their heart and all their soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and when they pray to you in the direction of their land that you gave their ancestors, the city you have chosen, and the temple I have built for your name,48When they return to you with all their heart and being in the land where they are held prisoner, and direct their prayers to you toward the land you gave to their ancestors, your chosen city, and the temple I built for your honor,
may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place, their prayer and petition and uphold their cause.49then listen from your heavenly dwelling place to their prayers for help and vindicate them.
May you forgive your people who sinned against you and all their rebellions against you, and may you grant them compassion before their captors, so that they may treat them compassionately.50Forgive all the rebellious acts of your sinful people and cause their captors to have mercy on them.
For they are your people and your inheritance; you brought them out of Egypt, out of the middle of an iron furnace.51After all, they are your people and your special possession whom you brought out of Egypt, from the middle of the iron-smelting furnace.
May your eyes be open to your servant's petition and to the petition of your people Israel, listening to them whenever they call to you.52"May you be attentive to your servant's and your people Israel's requests for help and may you respond to all their prayers to you.
For you, Lord GOD, have set them apart as your inheritance from all peoples of the earth, as you spoke through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt.53After all, you picked them out of all the nations of the earth to be your special possession, just as you, O sovereign LORD, announced through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt."
When Solomon finished praying this entire prayer and petition to the LORD, he got up from kneeling before the altar of the LORD, with his hands spread out toward heaven,54When Solomon finished presenting all these prayers and requests to the LORD, he got up from before the altar of the LORD where he had kneeled and spread out his hands toward the sky.
and he stood and blessed the whole congregation of Israel with a loud voice:55When he stood up, he pronounced a blessing over the entire assembly of Israel, saying in a loud voice:
"Blessed be the LORD! He has given rest to his people Israel according to all he has said. Not one of all the good promises he made through his servant Moses has failed.56"The LORD is worthy of praise because he has made Israel his people secure just as he promised! Not one of all the faithful promises he made through his servant Moses is left unfulfilled!
May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our ancestors. May he not abandon us or leave us57May the LORD our God be with us, as he was with our ancestors. May he not abandon us or leave us.
so that he causes us to be devoted to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, which he commanded our ancestors.58May he make us submissive, so we can follow all his instructions and obey the commandments, rules, and regulations he commanded our ancestors.
May my words with which I have made my petition before the LORD be near the LORD our God day and night. May he uphold his servant's cause and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires.59May the LORD our God be constantly aware of these requests of mine I have presented to him, so that he might vindicate his servant and his people Israel as the need arises.
May all the peoples of the earth know that the LORD is God. There is no other!60Then all the nations of the earth will recognize that the LORD is the only genuine God.
Be wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD our God to walk in his statutes and to keep his commands, as it is today."61May you demonstrate wholehearted devotion to the LORD our God by following his rules and obeying his commandments, as you are presently doing."
The king and all Israel with him were offering sacrifices in the LORD's presence.62The king and all Israel with him were presenting sacrifices to the LORD.
Solomon offered a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to the LORD: twenty-two thousand cattle and one hundred twenty thousand sheep and goats. In this manner the king and all the Israelites dedicated the LORD's temple.63Solomon offered as peace offerings to the LORD 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep. Then the king and all the Israelites dedicated the LORD's temple.
On the same day, the king consecrated the middle of the courtyard that was in front of the LORD's temple because that was where he offered the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the fat of the fellowship offerings since the bronze altar before the LORD was too small to accommodate the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the fellowship offerings.64That day the king consecrated the middle of the courtyard that is in front of the LORD's temple. He offered there burnt sacrifices, grain offerings, and the fat from the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that stood before the LORD was too small to hold all these offerings.
Solomon and all Israel with him--a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath to the Brook of Egypt--observed the festival at that time in the presence of the LORD our God, seven days, and seven more days--fourteen days.65At that time Solomon and all Israel with him celebrated a festival before the LORD our God for two entire weeks. This great assembly included people from all over the land, from Lebo Hamath in the north to the Brook of Egypt in the south.
On the fifteenth day he sent the people away. So they blessed the king and went to their homes rejoicing and with happy hearts for all the goodness that the LORD had done for his servant David and for his people Israel.66On the fifteenth day after the festival started, he dismissed the people. They asked God to empower the king and then went to their homes, happy and content because of all the good the LORD had done for his servant David and his people Israel.
