When Solomon finished building the temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and all that Solomon desired to do, | 1After Solomon finished building the LORD's temple, the royal palace, and all the other construction projects he had planned, |
the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time just as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. | 2the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, in the same way he had appeared to him at Gibeon. |
The LORD said to him: I have heard your prayer and petition you have made before me. I have consecrated this temple you have built, to put my name there forever; my eyes and my heart will be there at all times. | 3The LORD said to him, "I have answered your prayer and your request for help that you made to me. I have consecrated this temple you built by making it my permanent home; I will be constantly present there. |
As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and in what is right, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and ordinances, | 4You must serve me with integrity and sincerity, just as your father David did. Do everything I commanded and obey my rules and regulations. |
I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel. | 5Then I will allow your dynasty to rule over Israel permanently, just as I promised your father David, 'You will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.' |
If you or your sons turn away from following me and do not keep my commands--my statutes that I have set before you--and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them, | 6"But if you or your sons ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep, and decide to serve and worship other gods, |
I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them, and I will reject the temple I have sanctified for my name. Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples. | 7then I will remove Israel from the land I have given them, I will abandon this temple I have consecrated with my presence, and Israel will be mocked and ridiculed among all the nations. |
Though this temple is now exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will scoff. They will say: Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple? | 8This temple will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be shocked and will hiss out their scorn, saying, 'Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple?' |
Then they will say: Because they abandoned the LORD their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They held on to other gods and bowed in worship to them and served them. Because of this, the LORD brought all this ruin on them. | 9Others will then answer, 'Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who led their ancestors out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought all this disaster down on them.'" |
At the end of twenty years during which Solomon had built the two houses, the LORD's temple and the royal palace-- | 10After twenty years, during which Solomon built the LORD's temple and the royal palace, |
King Hiram of Tyre having supplied him with cedar and cypress logs and gold for his every wish--King Solomon gave Hiram twenty towns in the land of Galilee. | 11King Solomon gave King Hiram of Tyre twenty cities in the region of Galilee, because Hiram had supplied Solomon with cedars, evergreens, and all the gold he wanted. |
So Hiram went out from Tyre to look over the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them. | 12When Hiram went out from Tyre to inspect the cities Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. |
So he said, "What are these towns you've given me, my brother?" So he called them the Land of Cabul, as they are still called today. | 13Hiram asked, "Why did you give me these cities, my friend?" He called that area the region of Cabul, a name which it has retained to this day. |
Now Hiram had sent the king nine thousand pounds of gold. | 14Hiram had sent to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold. |
This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon had imposed to build the LORD's temple, his own palace, the supporting terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. | 15Here are the details concerning the work crews King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's temple, his palace, the terrace, the wall of Jerusalem, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. |
Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He then burned it, killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and gave it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife. | 16(Pharaoh, king of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gezer. He burned it and killed the Canaanites who lived in the city. He gave it as a wedding present to his daughter, who had married Solomon.) |
Then Solomon rebuilt Gezer, Lower Beth-horon, | 17Solomon built up Gezer, lower Beth Horon, |
Baalath, Tamar in the Wilderness of Judah, | 18Baalath, Tadmor in the wilderness, |
all the storage cities that belonged to Solomon, the chariot cities, the cavalry cities, and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, Lebanon, or anywhere else in the land of his dominion. | 19all the storage cities that belonged to him, and the cities where chariots and horses were kept. He built whatever he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and throughout his entire kingdom. |
As for all the peoples who remained of the Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not Israelites-- | 20Now several non-Israelite peoples were left in the land after the conquest of Joshua, including the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
their descendants who remained in the land after them, those whom the Israelites were unable to destroy completely--Solomon imposed forced labor on them; it is still this way today. | 21Their descendants remained in the land (the Israelites were unable to wipe them out completely). Solomon conscripted them for his work crews, and they continue in that role to this very day. |
But Solomon did not consign the Israelites to slavery; they were soldiers, his servants, his commanders, his captains, and commanders of his chariots and his cavalry. | 22Solomon did not assign Israelites to these work crews; the Israelites served as his soldiers, attendants, officers, charioteers, and commanders of his chariot forces. |
These were the deputies who were over Solomon's work: 550 who supervised the people doing the work. | 23These men were also in charge of Solomon's work projects; there were a total of 550 men who supervised the workers. |
Pharaoh's daughter moved from the city of David to the house that Solomon had built for her; he then built the terraces. | 24Solomon built the terrace as soon as Pharaoh's daughter moved up from the city of David to the palace Solomon built for her. |
Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, and he burned incense with them in the LORD's presence. So he completed the temple. | 25Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense along with them before the LORD. He made the temple his official worship place. |
King Solomon put together a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom. | 26King Solomon also built ships in Ezion Geber, which is located near Elat in the land of Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. |
With the fleet, Hiram sent his servants, experienced seamen, along with Solomon's servants. | 27Hiram sent his fleet and some of his sailors, who were well acquainted with the sea, to serve with Solomon's men. |
They went to Ophir and acquired gold there--sixteen tons--and delivered it to Solomon. | 28They sailed to Ophir, took from there four hundred twenty talents of gold, and then brought them to King Solomon. |
