The East Gate Assigned to the Prince

1  וַיָּ֣שֶׁב (And He brought back) אֹתִ֗י (me) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (the way) שַׁ֤עַר (of the gate) הַמִּקְדָּשׁ֙ (of the sanctuary) הַֽחִיצ֔וֹן (outer) הַפֹּנֶ֖ה (that faced) קָדִ֑ים (east); וְה֖וּא (and it was) סָגֽוּר׃ (shut). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלַ֜י (to me) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) הַשַּׁ֣עַר (The gate) הַזֶּה֩ (this) סָג֨וּר (shut), יִהְיֶ֜ה (will be kept) לֹ֣א (not) יִפָּתֵ֗חַ (shall it be opened), וְאִישׁ֙ (and a man) לֹא־ (not) יָ֣בֹא (will enter) ב֔וֹ (by it) כִּ֛י (because) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), בָּ֣א (has entered) ב֑וֹ (by it) וְהָיָ֖ה (and it will be kept) סָגֽוּר׃ (shut). 3  אֶֽת־ (-) הַנָּשִׂ֗יא (the prince); נָ֥שִׂיא (the prince), ה֛וּא (himself) יֵֽשֶׁב־ (he may sit) בּ֥וֹ (in it) לֶאֱכָול־ (to eat) לֶ֖חֶם (bread) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH); מִדֶּ֨רֶךְ (by way) אֻלָ֤ם (of the portico) הַשַּׁ֙עַר֙ (of the gateway), יָב֔וֹא (he will enter) וּמִדַּרְכּ֖וֹ (and by its way) יֵצֵֽא׃ (he will go out).

4  וַיְבִיאֵ֜נִי (And He brought me) דֶּֽרֶךְ־ (by way) שַׁ֣עַר (of the gate to) הַצָּפוֹן֮ (the north) אֶל־ (toward) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הַבַּיִת֒ (of the temple); וָאֵ֕רֶא (and I looked), וְהִנֵּ֛ה (and behold), מָלֵ֥א (filled) כְבוֹד־ (the glory) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וָאֶפֹּ֖ל (and I fell) אֶל־ (on) פָּנָֽי׃ (my face). 5  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלַ֜י (to me) יְהֹוָ֗ה (YHWH) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֡ם (of man), שִׂ֣ים (set) לִבְּךָ֩ (your heart), וּרְאֵ֨ה (and see) בְעֵינֶ֜יךָ (with your eyes), וּבְאָזְנֶ֣יךָ (and with your ears) שְּׁמָ֗ע (hear) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) אֲנִי֙ (I) מְדַבֵּ֣ר (am saying) אֹתָ֔ךְ (to you) לְכָל־ (concerning all) חֻקּ֥וֹת (the statutes) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), וּלְכָל־ (and concerning all) תּוֹרֹתוֹ (its laws) וְשַׂמְתָּ֤ (and set) לִבְּךָ֙ (your heart) לִמְב֣וֹא (concerning those entering) הַבַּ֔יִת (the house), בְּכֹ֖ל (and all) מוֹצָאֵ֥י (those going out) הַמִּקְדָּֽשׁ׃ (of the sanctuary).

Reproof of the Levites

6  וְאָמַרְתָּ֤ (And say) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֙רִי֙ (the rebellious one), אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); רַב־ (Enough) לָכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) מִֽכָּל־ (from all) תּוֹעֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ abominations), בֵּ֥ית (O house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel), 7  בַּהֲבִיאֲכֶ֣ם (your⁺ bringing in) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) נֵכָ֗ר (of a foreigner), עַרְלֵי־ (uncircumcised) לֵב֙ (in heart), וְעַרְלֵ֣י (and uncircumcised) בָשָׂ֔ר (in flesh), לִהְי֥וֹת (to be) בְּמִקְדָּשִׁ֖י (in My sanctuary), לְחַלְּל֣וֹ (to defile) אֶת־ (-) בֵּיתִ֑י (My house), בְּהַקְרִֽיבְכֶ֤ם (in your⁺ offering) אֶת־ (-) לַחְמִי֙ (My food), חֵ֣לֶב (the fat) וָדָ֔ם (and the blood), וַיָּפֵ֙רוּ֙ (and they have broken) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֔י (My covenant) אֶ֖ל (because) כָּל־ (of all) תּוֹעֲבוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ abominations). 8  וְלֹ֥א (And not) שְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (have you⁺ kept) מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת (guard over) קָדָשָׁ֑י (My holy things); וַתְּשִׂימ֗וּן (and you⁺ set them) לְשֹׁמְרֵ֧י (to keep) מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֛י (guard over) בְּמִקְדָּשִׁ֖י (My sanctuary) לָכֶֽם׃ (for you⁺).

9  כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH) כָּל־ (any) בֶּן־ (son) נֵכָ֗ר (of a foreigner), עֶ֤רֶל (uncircumcised) לֵב֙ (in heart), וְעֶ֣רֶל (and uncircumcised) בָּשָׂ֔ר (in flesh), לֹ֥א (not) יָב֖וֹא (will come) אֶל־ (into) מִקְדָּשִׁ֑י (My sanctuary), לְכָל־ (any) בֶּן־ (son) נֵכָ֔ר (of a foreigner) אֲשֶׁ֕ר (who is) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

10  כִּ֣י (Oh) אִם־ (how) הַלְוִיִּ֗ם (the Levites) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) רָֽחֲקוּ֙ (went far) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from Me) בִּתְע֤וֹת (in the straying), יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) תָּע֣וּ (went astray) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from Me) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם (their idols); וְנָשְׂא֖וּ (and will indeed bear) עֲוֺנָֽם׃ (their iniquity). 11  וְהָי֤וּ (And they shall be) בְמִקְדָּשִׁי֙ (in My sanctuary), מְשָׁ֣רְתִ֔ים (ministering) פְּקֻדּוֹת֙ (as attendants) אֶל־ (at) שַׁעֲרֵ֣י (the gates) הַבַּ֔יִת (of the house), וּֽמְשָׁרְתִ֖ים (and ministering) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּ֑יִת (in the house); הֵ֠מָּה (they) יִשְׁחֲט֨וּ (shall slaughter) אֶת־ (-) הָעֹלָ֤ה (the burnt offering) וְאֶת־ (and) הַזֶּ֙בַח֙ (the sacrifice) לָעָ֔ם (for the people), וְהֵ֛מָּה (and they) יַעַמְד֥וּ (shall stand) לִפְנֵיהֶ֖ם (before them) לְשָֽׁרְתָֽם׃ (to minister to them).

12  יַ֗עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יְשָׁרְת֤וּ (they ministered) אוֹתָם֙ (to them) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) גִלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֔ם (their idols), וְהָי֥וּ (and they became) לְבֵֽית־ (for the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לְמִכְשׁ֣וֹל (a stumbling block) עָוֺ֑ן (of iniquity); עַל־ (upon) כֵּן֩ (thus) נָשָׂ֨אתִי (I have lifted) יָדִ֜י (My hand) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (concerning them) נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH), וְנָשְׂא֖וּ (that they shall bear) עֲוֺנָֽם׃ (their iniquity). 13  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יִגְּשׁ֤וּ (will they come near) אֵלַי֙ (to Me) לְכַהֵ֣ן (to minister as priest) לִ֔י (to Me) וְלָגֶ֙שֶׁת֙ (or come near) עַל־ (to) כָּל־ (any) קָ֣דָשַׁ֔י (of My holy things), אֶל־ (to) קָדְשֵׁ֖י (the holies) הַקְּדָשִׁ֑ים (of the holies) וְנָֽשְׂאוּ֙ (and they will bear) כְּלִמָּתָ֔ם (their shame), וְתוֹעֲבוֹתָ֖ם (and their abominations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) עָשֽׂוּ׃ (they have done). 14  וְנָתַתִּ֣י (And I will give) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) שֹׁמְרֵ֖י (to keep) מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת (charge) הַבָּ֑יִת (of the temple), לְכֹל֙ (for all) עֲבֹ֣דָת֔וֹ (its service) וּלְכֹ֛ל (and for all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה (is done) בּֽוֹ׃פ (in it).

The Duties of the Priests

15  וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֨ים (And the priests) הַלְוִיִּ֜ם (Levite), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) צָד֗וֹק (of Zadok), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) שָׁמְר֜וּ (kept) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֤רֶת (guard over) מִקְדָּשִׁי֙ (My sanctuary) בִּתְע֤וֹת (in the wandering away) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from Me) הֵ֛מָּה (they) יִקְרְב֥וּ (will come near) אֵלַ֖י (to Me) לְשָֽׁרְתֵ֑נִי (to minister to Me) וְעָמְד֣וּ (and they will stand) לְפָנַ֗י (before Me) לְהַקְרִ֥יב (to offer) לִי֙ (to Me) חֵ֣לֶב (the fat) וָדָ֔ם (and the blood), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH); 16  הֵ֜מָּה (They) יָבֹ֣אוּ (shall enter) אֶל־ (into) מִקְדָּשִׁ֗י (my sanctuary), וְהֵ֛מָּה (and they) יִקְרְב֥וּ (shall come near) אֶל־ (to) שֻׁלְחָנִ֖י (My table), לְשָׁרְתֵ֑נִי (to minister to Me) וְשָׁמְר֖וּ (and they shall keep) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמַרְתִּֽי׃ (My charge).

17  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it will come to pass), בְּבוֹאָם֙ (in their going in) אֶֽל־ (to) שַׁעֲרֵי֙ (the gates) הֶחָצֵ֣ר (of the court), הַפְּנִימִ֔ית (inner) בִּגְדֵ֥י (garments); פִשְׁתִּ֖ים (of linen) יִלְבָּ֑שׁוּ (that they will put on) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַעֲלֶ֤ה (will come up) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (upon them) צֶ֔מֶר (wool) בְּשָֽׁרְתָ֗ם (in their ministering) בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֛י (within the gates) הֶחָצֵ֥ר (of the court), הַפְּנִימִ֖ית (inner) וָבָֽיְתָה׃ (and within it). 18  פַּאֲרֵ֤י (Turbans) פִשְׁתִּים֙ (of linen) יִהְי֣וּ (will be) עַל־ (on) רֹאשָׁ֔ם (their heads), וּמִכְנְסֵ֣י (and undergarments) פִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of linen) יִהְי֖וּ (will be) עַל־ (on) מָתְנֵיהֶ֑ם (their bodies); לֹ֥א (not) יַחְגְּר֖וּ (will they gird themselves) בַּיָּֽזַע׃ (with sweat).

19  וּ֠בְצֵאתָם (And in their going out) אֶל־ (to) הֶחָצֵ֨ר (the court), הַחִיצוֹנָ֜ה (outer) אֶל־ (to) הֶחָצֵ֣ר (the court) הַחִיצוֹנָה֮ (the outer) אֶל־ (unto) הָעָם֒ (the people), יִפְשְׁט֣וּ (they shall take off) אֶת־ (-) בִּגְדֵיהֶ֗ם (their garments) אֲשֶׁר־ (those which) הֵ֙מָּה֙ (they) מְשָׁרְתִ֣ם (have ministered), בָּ֔ם (in them) וְהִנִּ֥יחוּ (and they shall leave) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) בְּלִֽשְׁכֹ֣ת (in the chambers), הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (of the holiness) וְלָֽבְשׁוּ֙ (and they shall put on) בְּגָדִ֣ים (garments); אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) וְלֹֽא־ (so that they do not) יְקַדְּשׁ֥וּ (they sanctify) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בְּבִגְדֵיהֶֽם׃ (with their garments).

20  וְרֹאשָׁם֙ (And their head), לֹ֣א (not) יְגַלֵּ֔חוּ (they shall shave it) וּפֶ֖רַע (and their hair) לֹ֣א (not) יְשַׁלֵּ֑חוּ (shall they grow long); כָּס֥וֹם (and trimming) יִכְסְמ֖וּ (they will trim) אֶת־ (-) רָאשֵׁיהֶֽם׃ (their heads). 21  וְיַ֥יִן (And wine), לֹֽא־ (not) יִשְׁתּ֖וּ (shall drink) כָּל־ (any) כֹּהֵ֑ן (priest) בְּבוֹאָ֖ם (in their coming) אֶל־ (into) הֶחָצֵ֥ר (the court) הַפְּנִימִֽית׃ (inner). 22  וְאַלְמָנָה֙ (And a widow), וּגְרוּשָׁ֔ה (or a divorced woman); לֹֽא־ (not) יִקְח֥וּ (they shall take) לָהֶ֖ם (to themselves) לְנָשִׁ֑ים (as wife) כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) בְּתוּלֹ֗ת (virgins) מִזֶּ֙רַע֙ (from the seed) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְהָֽאַלְמָנָה֙ (or the widow) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה (is) אַלְמָנָ֔ה (a widow) מִכֹּהֵ֖ן (of a priest) יִקָּֽחוּ׃ (they may take). 23  וְאֶת־ (And) עַמִּ֣י (My people) יוֹר֔וּ (they will teach) בֵּ֥ין (between) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (the holy) לְחֹ֑ל (and the common), וּבֵין־ (and between) טָמֵ֥א (the unclean) לְטָה֖וֹר (and the clean) יוֹדִעֻֽם׃ (they shall make them know).

24  וְעַל־ (And in) רִ֗יב (a dispute) הֵ֚מָּה (they) יַעַמְד֣וּ (will stand) לִשְׁפֹּט (to judge); בְּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י (with My judgments). וְשָׁפְטֻהוּ (They shall judge it) וְאֶת־ (and) תּוֹרֹתַ֤י (My laws) וְאֶת־ (and) חֻקֹּתַי֙ (My statutes) בְּכָל־ (in all) מוֹעֲדַ֣י (My appointed times); יִשְׁמֹ֔רוּ (they shall keep) וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths) יְקַדֵּֽשׁוּ׃ (they shall sanctify).

25  וְאֶל־ (And unto) מֵ֣ת (a dead) אָדָ֔ם (a person) לֹ֥א (not) יָב֖וֹא (will they come) לְטָמְאָ֑ה (to defile themselves) כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) לְאָ֡ב (for a father), וּ֠לְאֵם (or for a mother), וּלְבֵ֨ן (for a son), וּלְבַ֜ת (or for a daughter), לְאָ֗ח (or for a brother), וּלְאָח֛וֹת (or for a sister) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (who) לֹא־ (not) הָיְתָ֥ה (has been wife) לְאִ֖ישׁ (to a man), יִטַּמָּֽאוּ׃ (may they defile themselves). 26  וְאַחֲרֵ֖י (And after) טָֽהֳרָת֑וֹ (he is cleansed), שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֖ים (days) יִסְפְּרוּ־ (they shall count) לֽוֹ׃ (for him). 27  וּבְיוֹם֩ (And on the day) בֹּא֨וֹ (of his coming) אֶל־ (into) הַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ (the sanctuary), אֶל־ (into) הֶחָצֵ֤ר (the court), הַפְּנִימִית֙ (inner) לְשָׁרֵ֣ת (to minister) בַּקֹּ֔דֶשׁ (in the sanctuary), יַקְרִ֖יב (he must offer) חַטָּאת֑וֹ (his sin offering), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

28  וְהָיְתָ֤ה (And it shall be) לָהֶם֙ (unto them) לְֽנַחֲלָ֔ה (for an inheritance); אֲנִ֖י (I am) נַֽחֲלָתָ֑ם (their inheritance); וַאֲחֻזָּ֗ה (possession) לֹֽא־ (not) תִתְּנ֤וּ (you⁺ shall give) לָהֶם֙ (to them) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel); אֲנִ֖י (I am) אֲחֻזָּתָֽם׃ (their possession).

29  הַמִּנְחָה֙ (The grain offering), וְהַחַטָּ֣את (and the sin offering), וְהָאָשָׁ֔ם (and the guilt offering); הֵ֖מָּה (they) יֹֽאכְל֑וּם (shall eat) וְכָל־ (and every) חֵ֥רֶם (devoted thing) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (in Israel) לָהֶ֥ם (to them) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (shall be). 30  וְרֵאשִׁית֩ (And the first) כָּל־ (of all) בִּכּ֨וּרֵי (firstfruits) כֹ֜ל (of all things) וְכָל־ (and every) תְּר֣וּמַת (contribution) כֹּ֗ל (of all things), מִכֹּל֙ (from all) תְּרוּמ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ contributions), לַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (for the priests); יִֽהְיֶ֑ה (it will be) וְרֵאשִׁ֤ית (and the first) עֲרִסֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ (of your⁺ dough), תִּתְּנ֣וּ (you⁺ shall give) לַכֹּהֵ֔ן (to the priest) לְהָנִ֥יחַ (to cause to rest) בְּרָכָ֖ה (a blessing) אֶל־ (on) בֵּיתֶֽךָ׃ (your house). 31  כָּל־ (Every) נְבֵלָה֙ (carcass), וּטְרֵפָ֔ה (and torn thing), מִן־ (from) הָע֖וֹף (the bird) וּמִן־ (or from) הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה (the beast). לֹ֥א (Not) יֹאכְל֖וּ (shall eat) הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃פ (the priests).
