There at Beth-shemesh
Beth-shemesh was a city located in the territory of Judah, near the border with the Philistines. It was a Levitical city, meaning it was designated for the Levites, who were the priestly tribe of Israel. The location is significant as it was a strategic point for military encounters. The battle here reflects the ongoing conflict between the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah
Jehoash, also known as Joash, was the king of Israel during a time of division between the northern and southern kingdoms. Amaziah, king of Judah, had provoked Jehoash by challenging him to battle, which led to his defeat and capture. This event highlights the internal strife and division within the Israelite nation, which often weakened them against external threats.

the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz
Amaziah was the son of Joash, who had been a relatively good king of Judah, and the grandson of Jehoahaz. This lineage is important as it shows the continuation of the Davidic line in Judah, which is significant in biblical prophecy concerning the Messiah. The Davidic covenant promised that a descendant of David would always sit on the throne, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem
Jehoash's decision to bring Amaziah to Jerusalem was a demonstration of his victory and power over Judah. Jerusalem was the capital of Judah and the spiritual center for the Israelites, making this act a significant humiliation for Amaziah and his kingdom.

and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate
The destruction of the wall was a strategic and symbolic act. The Ephraim Gate and the Corner Gate were significant points in the city's defenses. By breaking down this section of the wall, Jehoash not only weakened Jerusalem's defenses but also sent a message of dominance and control. This act of breaking down the wall is reminiscent of other biblical instances where God allowed the walls of cities to be breached as a form of judgment.

a section of four hundred cubits
A cubit is an ancient measurement roughly equivalent to 18 inches or 45 centimeters. Therefore, four hundred cubits would be about 600 feet or 180 meters. This significant breach in the wall would have left Jerusalem vulnerable to further attacks and symbolized the extent of Judah's defeat. The specific measurement underscores the thoroughness of Jehoash's victory and the humiliation of Judah.

2. Amaziah, King of Judah
The king of the southern kingdom of Judah, who was defeated and captured by Joash. His reign is marked by both faithfulness and failure.

3. Beth-shemesh
A city in Judah where the battle between Joash and Amaziah took place. It was a significant location for military encounters.

Teaching Points
The Consequences of Pride
Amaziah's pride led to his downfall. We must guard against pride in our own lives, recognizing that it can lead to spiritual and relational breaches.

The Importance of Humility
Humility before God and others can prevent unnecessary conflicts and lead to peace and restoration.

The Vulnerability of Sin
Just as the walls of Jerusalem were breached, sin can create vulnerabilities in our spiritual defenses. We must remain vigilant and seek God's protection.

The Impact of Leadership Decisions
The decisions of leaders, like Amaziah, have far-reaching consequences. Wise and godly leadership is crucial for the well-being of a community.

Restoration and Rebuilding
Even when walls are broken, God offers a path to restoration. We should seek His guidance in rebuilding what has been lost or damaged.

What Does 2 Chronicles 25:23 Mean
There at Beth-shemesh

Beth-shemesh (“house of the sun”) sat on the border between Judah and Israel, making it a fitting stage for this civil clash. The battle described in 2 Chronicles 25:21-22 ended here when Amaziah ignored prophetic warning and challenged Jehoash. The text records the outcome both factually and decisively, underscoring that God’s Word is history, not myth.

Joshua 21:16 lists Beth-shemesh as a Levitical town; 1 Samuel 6:13 shows it already known for dramatic divine intervention when the Ark returned from Philistia.

2 Chronicles 25:7-10 recounts God’s earlier instruction for Amaziah to rely solely on Him, highlighting how disobedience set the stage for defeat.

Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz

The verse stresses lineage to contrast two monarchs from covenant-related nations now at odds. Scripture plainly states Jehoash “captured Amaziah,” a humiliating reversal for Judah’s king.

2 Kings 14:13-14 (parallel record) confirms the capture and plundering, reinforcing the accuracy of the Chronicler.

Proverbs 16:18 reminds that “pride goes before destruction,” exactly what we see in Amaziah after his earlier victory over Edom (2 Chronicles 25:14).

Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem

The march to Jerusalem is literal and loaded with symbolism: the northern king parades his southern counterpart into the capital that was supposed to be the center of Yahweh worship.

Deuteronomy 28:36 warns that disobedient kings would be led away; Amaziah experiences a foretaste of covenant curses.

• The scene foreshadows later exiles (2 Chronicles 36:17), showing how incremental unfaithfulness invites larger judgments.

and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate

Jehoash targets the northern wall, the side facing Israel, creating a 600-foot breach (see next section). This was not mere vandalism but a calculated statement: Judah’s defenses are helpless without God.

Nehemiah 3:6 and 12:39 later mention these same gates, indicating the chronicled damage was real and required future repair.

Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the LORD guards a city, the watchman stays awake in vain,” precisely illustrated by Jerusalem’s toppled fortifications.

A section of four hundred cubits

Four hundred cubits (approximately 600 feet/180 meters) quantifies the devastation. The Spirit includes the measurement to show:

• The breach was large enough to render Jerusalem indefensible.

• God’s judgment was neither symbolic nor minimal—He allowed visible, measurable consequences.

Acts 12:23 and 5:5 demonstrate a similar principle in the New Testament: when God judges, the results are concrete and observable.

summary

2 Chronicles 25:23 records a literal defeat that sprang from Amaziah’s pride and partial obedience. On the neutral ground of Beth-shemesh, God used Jehoash to humble Judah’s king, then permitted a 400-cubit gap in Jerusalem’s wall to remind the nation that safety rests not in masonry but in fidelity to Him. The verse therefore calls readers to heed God’s warnings, walk in humble dependence, and remember that Scripture’s historical details carry enduring spiritual weight.

(23) Jehoahaz.--Several Hebrew MSS. read Ahaziah, as in 2Kings 14:13, with which the rest of the verse agrees: see the Notes there. (See Note on 2Chronicles 21:17.)

The corner gate.--So 2Kings 14:13, rightly. Our Hebrew text has, "gate of the turning one," or "gate that turneth;" which would require some word indicating the direction of the turning. (Comp. Ezekiel 8:3, "gate that turneth northward.") Some MSS., and all the versions, agree with Kings. It is merely a matter of different points. (Comp. also 2Chronicles 26:9.) . . .

Verse 23. - Joash... took; Hebrew, תָּפַּשׂ, "seized" (as Genesis 39:12), or "caught up" (as Deuteronomy 9:17), or "capture" (as Joshua 8:8). The gate of Ephraim (see Conder's 'Handbook to the Bible,' p. 343). It led out on the north or north-west side of the city. There is very little to identify it with the high gate of Benjamin (see ditto, p. 346). The corner gate. This is not the translation of our Hebrew text (שַׁעַר הַפּונֶה, which, see margin, means "that looketh"), but of the Hebrew text of the parallel (חַפִנָּה); see pp. 343-346 of Conder's 'Handbook to the Bible,' and map facing p. 334, 2nd edit. Four hundred cubits. Probably about a hundred and eighty yards.
