3	Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 17	Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.

20	Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.”	For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”	When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”
23	He even swore [many things] to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.”	And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”	And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
24	She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.”	And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”	She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25	The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”	And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”	At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26	The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her.	And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.	The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
27	So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. 37	He said to them in reply, “Give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Are we to buy two hundred days’ wages worth of food and give it to them to eat?”	But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”	But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! 38	He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out they said, “Five loaves and two fish.”	And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”	“How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
39	So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.	Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.	Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.

48	Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them.	And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them,	He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,

50	They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!”	for they all saw him and were terrified. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.	And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
