6	When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.”	When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”	As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
7	The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”	The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”	The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
8	When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.	When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.	When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
9	He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. 10	“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”	So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”	“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11	Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12	Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”	From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”	From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13	When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha ).	So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14	It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!”	Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. 15	“Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!” “What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.	They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”	But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16	Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.	So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,	Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
17	Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha ).	and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 20	The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it. 22	Pilate replied, “No, what I have written, I have written.”	Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”	Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23	When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24	So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.	so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,	“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
25	Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.	but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 28	Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”	After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”	Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29	A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.	A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.	A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30	When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31	It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.	Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.	Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.	The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.

34	One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. 36	These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of his bones will be broken,”	For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”	These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
37	and “They will look on the one they pierced.”	And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”	and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
38	Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.	After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.	Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
39	With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.	Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.	He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40	Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.	So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41	The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.	Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.	At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
42	And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.	So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
