1	After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.	When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.	When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2	Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.	Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.	Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3	The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.	So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.	So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4	Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.	Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”	Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5	“Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied. “ I Am he,” Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)	They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.	“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
6	As Jesus said “ I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground!	When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.	When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7	Once more he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”	So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”	Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8	“I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said. “And since I am the one you want, let these others go.”	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9	He did this to fulfill his own statement: “I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”	This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”	This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10	Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave.	Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)	Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11	But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?”	So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”	Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12	So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.	So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him.	Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
13	First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.	First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.	and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
14	Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”	It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. 15	Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,	Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16	Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.	but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.	but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17	The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?” “No,” he said, “I am not.”	The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”	“You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18	Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.	Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.	It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
19	Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.	The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20	Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret.	Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.	“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
21	Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”	Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”	Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22	Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.	When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”	When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23	Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”	Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”	“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24	Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.	Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25	Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”	Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”	Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26	But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?”	One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”	One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27	Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.	Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.	Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28	Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor. His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the Passover.	Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.	Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29	So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, “What is your charge against this man?”	So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”	So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30	“We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.	They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”	“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31	“Then take him away and judge him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone,” the Jewish leaders replied.	Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”	Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32	(This fulfilled Jesus’ prediction about the way he would die.)	This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.	This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33	Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.	So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”	Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34	Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”	Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”	“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”	Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36	Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”	Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”	Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37	Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”	Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”	“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38	“What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime.	Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.	“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39	But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?”	But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”	But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40	But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)	They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.	They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
