7	The Jews answered, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”	The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”	The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

9	and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” Jesus did not answer him. 10	So Pilate said to him, “Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?”	So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”	“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11	Jesus answered [him], “You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12	Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out, “If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”	From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”	From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13	When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out and seated him on the judge’s bench in the place called Stone Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.	So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14	It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your king!”	Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”	It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
15	They cried out, “Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”	They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”	But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

23	When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier. 24	So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be,” in order that the passage of scripture might be fulfilled [that says]: “They divided my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots.” This is what the soldiers did.	so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,	“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
25	Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.	but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 29	There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth.	A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.	A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30	When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.	When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31	Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down.	Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.	Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.	The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.

35	An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may [come to] believe. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
36	For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: “Not a bone of it will be broken.”	For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”	These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
37	And again another passage says: “They will look upon him whom they have pierced.”	And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”	and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
38	After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body.	After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.	Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
39	Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds.	Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.	He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40	They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.	So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41	Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.	Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.	At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
42	So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.	So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.	Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
