1 When he had said this, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2 Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3 So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 5 They answered him, “Jesus the Nazorean.” He said to them, “I AM.” Judas his betrayer was also with them. They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
6 When he said to them, “I AM,” they turned away and fell to the ground. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 So he again asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus the Nazorean.” So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9 This was to fulfill what he had said, “I have not lost any of those you gave me.” This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?” So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12 So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him, So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
13 and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
14 It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people. 15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus. Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16 But Peter stood at the gate outside. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in. but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, “You are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18 Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made, because it was cold, and were warming themselves. Peter was also standing there keeping warm. Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine. The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing. 22 When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?” One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed. Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring [against] this man?” So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 At this, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” The Jews answered him, “We do not have the right to execute anyone,” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32 in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die. This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33 So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants [would] be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in him. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They cried out again, “Not this one but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary. They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
