5	So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, “Look! The Man!”	So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. 6	When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify [Him]! Crucify [Him]!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him [no crime, no cause for an accusation].”	When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”	As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
7	The Jews answered him, “We have a law [regarding blasphemy], and according to that law He should die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”	The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”	The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
8	So when Pilate heard this said, he was [even] more alarmed and afraid.	When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.	When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
9	He went into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus did not answer him.	He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.	and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10	So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”	So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”	“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11	Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the sin and guilt of the one who handed Me over to you is greater [than your own].”	Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12	As a result of this, Pilate kept making efforts to release Him, but the Jews kept screaming, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar! Anyone who makes himself out [to be] a king opposes Caesar [and rebels against the emperor]!”	From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”	From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13	When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.	So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.	When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
14	Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover [week], and it was about the sixth hour (noon). He said to the Jews, “Look, your King!”	Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”	It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
15	But they shouted, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”	They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”	But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16	Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified.	So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,	Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

22	Pilate replied, “What I have written I have written [and it remains written].”	Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”	Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23	Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer clothes and made four parts, a part for each soldier, and also the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven [in one piece] from the top throughout.	When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,	When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. 24	So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it will be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture, “THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER CLOTHING AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS.”	so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,	“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
25	So the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, His mother’s sister [Salome], Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.	but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 27	Then He said to the disciple (John), “Look! [here is] your mother [protect and provide for her]!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.	Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.	and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
28	After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said in fulfillment of the Scripture, “I am thirsty.”	After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”	Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29	A jar full of sour wine was placed there; so they put a sponge soaked in the sour wine on [a branch of] hyssop and held it to His mouth.	A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.	A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30	When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit.	When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31	Since it was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten death] and the bodies taken away.	Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.	Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who had been crucified with Him.	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
36	For these things took place to fulfill the Scripture, “NOT A BONE OF HIS SHALL BE BROKEN.”	For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”	These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
37	And again another Scripture says, “THEY SHALL LOOK AT HIM WHOM THEY HAVE PIERCED.”	And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”	and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
38	And after this, Joseph of Arimathea—a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews—asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away His body.	After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.	Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
39	Nicodemus, who had first come to Him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, [weighing] about a hundred [Roman] pounds.	Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.	He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40	So they took Jesus’ body and bound it in linen wrappings with the fragrant spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41	Now there was a garden at the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb [cut out of solid rock] in which no one had yet been laid.	Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42	Therefore, because of the Jewish day of Preparation, and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
