1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] removed from the [groove across the entrance of the] tomb. Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple (John), whom Jesus loved (esteemed), and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him!” So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
3 So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 And the two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 Stooping down and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings [neatly] lying there; but he did not go in. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came up, following him, and went into the tomb and saw the linen wrappings [neatly] lying there; Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7 and the [burial] face-cloth which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the [other] linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 So the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in too; and he saw [the wrappings and the face-cloth] and believed [without any doubt that Jesus had risen from the dead]. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10 Then the disciples went back again to their own homes. Then the disciples went back to their homes. Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
11 But Mary [who had returned] was standing outside the tomb sobbing; and so, as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb; But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 and she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” She told them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? For whom are you looking?” Supposing that He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you are the one who has carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’” Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene came, reporting to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
19 So when it was evening on that same day, the first day of the week, though the disciples were [meeting] behind barred doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.” On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
20 After He said this, He showed them His hands and His side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with great joy. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you [as My representatives].” Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
22 And when He said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of anyone they are forgiven [because of their faith]; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained [and remain unforgiven because of their unbelief].” If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve [disciples], who was called Didymus (the twin), was not with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.” So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, “Peace to you.” Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God] are they who did not see [Me] and yet believed [in Me].” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 There are also many other signs (attesting miracles) that Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
31 but these have been written so that you may believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God; and that by believing [and trusting in and relying on Him] you may have life in His name. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
