New Living Translation | Christian Standard Bible |
Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; proclaim his deeds among the peoples. |
Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds. | 2Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell about all his wondrous works! |
Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who worship the LORD. | 3Honor his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. |
Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him. | 4Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. |
Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given, | 5Remember the wondrous works he has done, his wonders, and the judgments he has pronounced, |
you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones. | 6you offspring of Abraham his servant, Jacob's descendants--his chosen ones. |
He is the LORD our God. His justice is seen throughout the land. | 7He is the LORD our God; his judgments govern the whole earth. |
He always stands by his covenant— the commitment he made to a thousand generations. | 8He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he ordained for a thousand generations-- |
This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac. | 9the covenant he made with Abraham, swore to Isaac, |
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant: | 10and confirmed to Jacob as a decree and to Israel as a permanent covenant: |
“I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.” | 11"I will give the land of Canaan to you as your inherited portion." |
He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan. | 12When they were few in number, very few indeed, and resident aliens in Canaan, |
They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. | 13wandering from nation to nation and from one kingdom to another, |
Yet he did not let anyone oppress them. He warned kings on their behalf: | 14he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their behalf: |
“Do not touch my chosen people, and do not hurt my prophets.” | 15"Do not touch my anointed ones, or harm my prophets." |
He called for a famine on the land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply. | 16He called down famine against the land and destroyed the entire food supply. |
Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them— Joseph, who was sold as a slave. | 17He had sent a man ahead of them--Joseph, who was sold as a slave. |
They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. | 18They hurt his feet with shackles; his neck was put in an iron collar. |
Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character. | 19Until the time his prediction came true, the word of the LORD tested him. |
Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door. | 20The king sent for him and released him; the ruler of peoples set him free. |
Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household; he became ruler over all the king’s possessions. | 21He made him master of his household, ruler over all his possessions-- |
He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers. | 22binding his officials at will and instructing his elders. |
Then Israel arrived in Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham. | 23Then Israel went to Egypt; Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham. |
And the LORD multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies. | 24The LORD made his people very fruitful; he made them more numerous than their foes, |
Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites, and they plotted against the LORD’s servants. | 25whose hearts he turned to hate his people and to deal deceptively with his servants. |
But the LORD sent his servant Moses, along with Aaron, whom he had chosen. | 26He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. |
They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians, and wonders in the land of Ham. | 27They performed his miraculous signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. |
The LORD blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go. | 28He sent darkness, and it became dark--for did they not defy his commands? |
He turned their water into blood, poisoning all the fish. | 29He turned their water into blood and caused their fish to die. |
Then frogs overran the land and even invaded the king’s bedrooms. | 30Their land was overrun with frogs, even in their royal chambers. |
When the LORD spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians, and gnats swarmed across Egypt. | 31He spoke, and insects came--gnats throughout their country. |
He sent them hail instead of rain, and lightning flashed over the land. | 32He gave them hail for rain, and lightning throughout their land. |
He ruined their grapevines and fig trees and shattered all the trees. | 33He struck their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their territory. |
He spoke, and hordes of locusts came— young locusts beyond number. | 34He spoke, and locusts came--young locusts without number. |
They ate up everything green in the land, destroying all the crops in their fields. | 35They devoured all the vegetation in their land and consumed the produce of their land. |
Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family. | 36He struck all the firstborn in their land, all their first progeny. |
The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes of Israel even stumbled. | 37Then he brought Israel out with silver and gold, and no one among his tribes stumbled. |
Egypt was glad when they were gone, for they feared them greatly. | 38Egypt was glad when they left, for the dread of Israel had fallen on them. |
The LORD spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness. | 39He spread a cloud as a covering and gave a fire to light up the night. |
They asked for meat, and he sent them quail; he satisfied their hunger with manna—bread from heaven. | 40They asked, and he brought quail and satisfied them with bread from heaven. |
He split open a rock, and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland. | 41He opened a rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a stream in the desert. |
For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham. | 42For he remembered his holy promise to Abraham his servant. |
So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing. | 43He brought his people out with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy. |
He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted. | 44He gave them the lands of the nations, and they inherited what other peoples had worked for. |
All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions. Praise the LORD! | 45All this happened so that they might keep his statutes and obey his instructions. Hallelujah! |
