New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. | 1Then the whole council rose and led Jesus away to Pilate. |
They began to state their case: “This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.” | 2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.” |
So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.” | 3So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. |
Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I find nothing wrong with this man!” | 4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.” |
Then they became insistent. “But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!” | 5But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people all over Judea with His teaching. He began in Galilee and has come all the way here.” |
“Oh, is he a Galilean?” Pilate asked. | 6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean. |
When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time. | 7And learning that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem at that time. |
Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle. | 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle. |
He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer. | 9Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer. |
Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations. | 10Meanwhile, the chief priests and scribes stood there, vehemently accusing Him. |
Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate. | 11And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate. |
(Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.) | 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies. |
Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people, | 13Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, |
and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent. | 14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him. |
Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty. | 15Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death. |
So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.” | 16Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” |
Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!” | 18But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” |
(Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.) | 19(Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) |
Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus. | 20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again, |
But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” | 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” |
For the third time he demanded, “Why? What crime has he committed? I have found no reason to sentence him to death. So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.” | 22A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.” |
But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed. | 23But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed. |
So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded. | 24So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met. |
As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished. The Crucifixion | 25As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and handed Jesus over to their will. |
As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. | 26As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. |
A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women. | 27A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him. |
But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. | 28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. |
For the days are coming when they will say, ‘Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.’ | 29Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’ |
People will beg the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and plead with the hills, ‘Bury us.’ | 30At that time ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ |
For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry? ” | 31For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?” |
Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. | 32Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus. |
When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. | 33When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left. |
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. | 34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots. |
The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” | 35The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.” |
The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. | 36The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine. |
They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” | 37“If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!” |
A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” | 38Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” | 39One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save Yourself and us!” |
But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? | 40But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment? |
We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” | 41We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” |
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” | 42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” |
And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” The Death of Jesus | 43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” |

The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. | 45The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. |
Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last. | 46Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last. |
When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent. ” | 47When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.” |
And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow. | 48And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts. |

He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come. | 51who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea, and was waiting for the kingdom of God. |
He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. | 52He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. |
Then he took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in a long sheet of linen cloth and laid it in a new tomb that had been carved out of rock. | 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid. |

As his body was taken away, the women from Galilee followed and saw the tomb where his body was placed. | 55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed. |
Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law. | 56Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment. |
