| 1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. | 1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. |

| 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: | 6"He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, |
| 7The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " | 7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." |
| 8Then they remembered his words. | 8And they remembered His words, |
| 9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. | 9and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. |
| 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. | 10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. |
| 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. | 11But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. |
| 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. | 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened. |
| 13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. | 13And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. |
| 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. | 14And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. |
| 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; | 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. |
| 16but they were kept from recognizing him. | 16But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. |
| 17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast. | 17And He said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?" And they stood still, looking sad. |
| 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" | 18One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?" |
| 19"What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. | 19And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, |
| 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; | 20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. |
| 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. | 21"But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. |
| 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning | 22"But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, |
| 23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. | 23and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. |
| 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus." | 24"Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see." |
| 25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! | 25And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! |
| 26Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" | 26"Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?" |
| 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. | 27Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. |
| 28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. | 28And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther. |
| 29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. | 29But they urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over." So He went in to stay with them. |
| 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. | 30When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. |
| 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. | 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. |
| 32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" | 32They said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?" |
| 33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together | 33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, |
| 34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." | 34saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon." |
| 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. | 35They began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. |
| 36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." | 36While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you." |
| 37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. | 37But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. |
| 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? | 38And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? |
| 39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." | 39"See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." |
| 40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. | 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. |
| 41And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" | 41While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" |

| 44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." | 44Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." |
| 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. | 45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, |
| 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, | 46and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, |
| 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. | 47and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. |
| 48You are witnesses of these things. | 48"You are witnesses of these things. |
| 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." | 49"And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." |
| 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. | 50And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. |
