Now as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.1As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man or his parents?"2And His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?"
Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him.3Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work.4"We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."5"While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."
Having said this, he spat on the ground and made some mud with the saliva. He smeared the mud on the blind man's eyes6When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,
and said to him, "Go wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So the blind man went away and washed, and came back seeing. 7and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam " (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar began saying, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?"8Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, "Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?"
Some people said, "This is the man!" while others said, "No, but he looks like him." The man himself kept insisting, "I am the one!"9Others were saying, "This is he," still others were saying, "No, but he is like him." He kept saying, "I am the one."
So they asked him, "How then were you made to see?"10So they were saying to him, "How then were your eyes opened?"
He replied, "The man called Jesus made mud, smeared it on my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and was able to see."11He answered, "The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash'; so I went away and washed, and I received sight."
They said to him, "Where is that man?" He replied, "I don't know." 12They said to him, "Where is He?" He said, "I do not know."
They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.13They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind.
(Now the day on which Jesus made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.)14Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight. He replied, "He put mud on my eyes and I washed, and now I am able to see." 15Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, "He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see."
Then some of the Pharisees began to say, "This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous signs?" Thus there was a division among them.16Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.
So again they asked the man who used to be blind, "What do you say about him, since he caused you to see?" "He is a prophet," the man replied. 17So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet."
Now the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe that he had really been blind and had gained his sight until at last they summoned the parents of the man who had become able to see.18The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
They asked the parents, "Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?"19and questioned them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?"
So his parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.20His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
But we do not know how he is now able to see, nor do we know who caused him to see. Ask him, he is a mature adult. He will speak for himself."21but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself."
(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders. For the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
For this reason his parents said, "He is a mature adult, ask him.") 23For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth. We know that this man is a sinner."24So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner."
He replied, "I do not know whether he is a sinner. I do know one thing--that although I was blind, now I can see."25He then answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."
Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he cause you to see?"26So they said to him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"
He answered, "I told you already and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You people don't want to become his disciples too, do you?" 27He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?"
They heaped insults on him, saying, "You are his disciple! We are disciples of Moses!28They reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
We know that God has spoken to Moses! We do not know where this man comes from!"29"We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from."
The man replied, "This is a remarkable thing, that you don't know where he comes from, and yet he caused me to see!30The man answered and said to them, "Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is devout and does his will, God listens to him.31"We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.
Never before has anyone heard of someone causing a man born blind to see.32"Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."33"If this man were not from God, He could do nothing."
They replied, "You were born completely in sinfulness, and yet you presume to teach us?" So they threw him out. 34They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?" So they put him out.
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, so he found the man and said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"35Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
The man replied, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"36He answered, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"
Jesus told him, "You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you."37Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you."
[He said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.38And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him.
Jesus said,] "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind." 39And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind."
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked him, "We are not blind too, are we?"40Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?"
Jesus replied, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin, but now because you claim that you can see, your guilt remains." 41Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.
