NET Bible | English Standard Version |
Now as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. | 1As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. |
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man or his parents?" | 2And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” |
Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him. | 3Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. |
We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work. | 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. |
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." | 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” |
Having said this, he spat on the ground and made some mud with the saliva. He smeared the mud on the blind man's eyes | 6Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud |
and said to him, "Go wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So the blind man went away and washed, and came back seeing. | 7and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. |
Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar began saying, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?" | 8The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” |
Some people said, "This is the man!" while others said, "No, but he looks like him." The man himself kept insisting, "I am the one!" | 9Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” |
So they asked him, "How then were you made to see?" | 10So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” |
He replied, "The man called Jesus made mud, smeared it on my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and was able to see." | 11He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” |
They said to him, "Where is that man?" He replied, "I don't know." | 12They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” |
They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees. | 13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. |
(Now the day on which Jesus made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.) | 14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. |
So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight. He replied, "He put mud on my eyes and I washed, and now I am able to see." | 15So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” |
Then some of the Pharisees began to say, "This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous signs?" Thus there was a division among them. | 16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. |
So again they asked the man who used to be blind, "What do you say about him, since he caused you to see?" "He is a prophet," the man replied. | 17So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” |
Now the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe that he had really been blind and had gained his sight until at last they summoned the parents of the man who had become able to see. | 18The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight |
They asked the parents, "Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?" | 19and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” |
So his parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. | 20His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. |
But we do not know how he is now able to see, nor do we know who caused him to see. Ask him, he is a mature adult. He will speak for himself." | 21But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” |
(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders. For the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. | 22(His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) |
For this reason his parents said, "He is a mature adult, ask him.") | 23Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” |
Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth. We know that this man is a sinner." | 24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” |
He replied, "I do not know whether he is a sinner. I do know one thing--that although I was blind, now I can see." | 25He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” |
Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he cause you to see?" | 26They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” |
He answered, "I told you already and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You people don't want to become his disciples too, do you?" | 27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” |
They heaped insults on him, saying, "You are his disciple! We are disciples of Moses! | 28And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
We know that God has spoken to Moses! We do not know where this man comes from!" | 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” |
The man replied, "This is a remarkable thing, that you don't know where he comes from, and yet he caused me to see! | 30The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. |
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is devout and does his will, God listens to him. | 31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. |
Never before has anyone heard of someone causing a man born blind to see. | 32Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. |
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." | 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” |
They replied, "You were born completely in sinfulness, and yet you presume to teach us?" So they threw him out. | 34They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. |
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, so he found the man and said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" | 35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” |
The man replied, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" | 36He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” |
Jesus told him, "You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you." | 37Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” |
[He said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him. | 38He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. |
Jesus said,] "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind." | 39Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” |
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked him, "We are not blind too, are we?" | 40Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” |
Jesus replied, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin, but now because you claim that you can see, your guilt remains." | 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. |
