1O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. | 1Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations! |
2Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. | 2Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds! |
3Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. | 3Boast about his holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! |
4Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore. | 4Seek the LORD and the strength he gives! Seek his presence continually! |
5Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; | 5Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed, |
6O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen. | 6O children of Abraham, God's servant, you descendants of Jacob, God's chosen ones! |
7He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth. | 7He is the LORD our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth. |
8He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. | 8He always remembers his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations-- |
9Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; | 9the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac! |
10And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: | 10He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise, |
11Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance: | 11saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance." |
12When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it. | 12When they were few in number, just a very few, and resident aliens within it, |
13When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people; | 13they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another. |
14He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; | 14He let no one oppress them; he disciplined kings for their sake, |
15Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. | 15saying, "Don't touch my chosen ones! Don't harm my prophets!" |
16Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. | 16He called down a famine upon the earth; he cut off all the food supply. |
17He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: | 17He sent a man ahead of them--Joseph was sold as a servant. |
18Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: | 18The shackles hurt his feet; his neck was placed in an iron collar, |
19Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. | 19until the time when his prediction came true. The LORD's word proved him right. |
20The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. | 20The king authorized his release; the ruler of nations set him free. |
21He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: | 21He put him in charge of his palace, and made him manager of all his property, |
22To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom. | 22giving him authority to imprison his officials and to teach his advisers. |
23Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. | 23Israel moved to Egypt; Jacob lived for a time in the land of Ham. |
24And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies. | 24The LORD made his people very fruitful, and made them more numerous than their enemies. |
25He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants. | 25He caused them to hate his people, and to mistreat his servants. |
26He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen. | 26He sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. |
27They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. | 27They executed his miraculous signs among them, and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham. |
28He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word. | 28He made it dark; they did not disobey his orders. |
29He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish. | 29He turned their water into blood, and killed their fish. |
30Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings. | 30Their land was overrun by frogs, which even got into the rooms of their kings. |
31He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, and lice in all their coasts. | 31He ordered flies to come; gnats invaded their whole territory. |
32He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land. | 32He sent hail along with the rain; there was lightning in their land. |
33He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and brake the trees of their coasts. | 33He destroyed their vines and fig trees, and broke the trees throughout their territory. |
34He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without number, | 34He ordered locusts to come, innumerable grasshoppers. |
35And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground. | 35They ate all the vegetation in their land, and devoured the crops of their fields. |
36He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength. | 36He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of their reproductive power. |
37He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. | 37He brought his people out enriched with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled. |
38Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them. | 38Egypt was happy when they left, for they were afraid of them. |
39He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night. | 39He spread out a cloud for a cover, and provided a fire to light up the night. |
40The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. | 40They asked for food, and he sent quails; he satisfied them with food from the sky. |
41He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river. | 41He opened up a rock and water flowed out; a river ran through dry regions. |
42For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. | 42Yes, he remembered the sacred promise he made to Abraham his servant. |
43And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: | 43When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy. |
44And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people; | 44He handed the territory of nations over to them, and they took possession of what other peoples had produced, |
45That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD. | 45so that they might keep his commands and obey his laws. Praise the LORD! |
