Isaiah 42

Here Is My Servant
(Matthew 12:15–21)

1  הֵ֤ן (Behold) עַבְדִּי֙ (My Servant), אֶתְמָךְ־ (I take hold); בּ֔וֹ (of him)

בְּחִירִ֖י (My Chosen One), רָצְתָ֣ה (in whom delights); נַפְשִׁ֑י (My soul)

נָתַ֤תִּי (I have put) רוּחִי֙ (My Spirit) עָלָ֔יו (upon Him)

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט (and justice) לַגּוֹיִ֥ם (to the nations) יוֹצִֽיא׃ (He will bring forth).

2  לֹ֥א (Not) יִצְעַ֖ק (will He cry out), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִשָּׂ֑א (lift up),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַשְׁמִ֥יעַ (He will make heard) בַּח֖וּץ (in the street) קוֹלֽוֹ׃ (His voice).

3  קָנֶ֤ה (A reed) רָצוּץ֙ (bruised) לֹ֣א (not) יִשְׁבּ֔וֹר (will He break),

וּפִשְׁתָּ֥ה (and flax) כֵהָ֖ה (smoldering) לֹ֣א (not) יְכַבֶּ֑נָּה (will He quench);

לֶאֱמֶ֖ת (for in faithfulness) יוֹצִ֥יא (He will bring forth) מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ (justice).

4  לֹ֤א (Not) יִכְהֶה֙ (will He be dimmed) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָר֔וּץ (be crushed),

עַד־ (until) יָשִׂ֥ים (He has established) בָּאָ֖רֶץ (on the earth); מִשְׁפָּ֑ט (justice)

וּלְתוֹרָת֖וֹ (and for His law). אִיִּ֥ים (The islands) יְיַחֵֽילוּ׃פ (wait).

5  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) הָאֵ֣ל׀ (God) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH),

בּוֹרֵ֤א (the One creating) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens),

וְנ֣וֹטֵיהֶ֔ם (and stretching them out);

רֹקַ֥ע (spreading out) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth), וְצֶאֱצָאֶ֑יהָ (and its offspring)

נֹתֵ֤ן (the One giving) נְשָׁמָה֙ (breath) לָעָ֣ם (to the people) עָלֶ֔יהָ (on it)

וְר֖וּחַ (and spirit) לַהֹלְכִ֥ים (to those walking) בָּֽהּ׃ (on it).

6  אֲנִ֧י (I) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) קְרָאתִ֥יךָֽ (have called You) בְצֶ֖דֶק (in righteousness),

וְאַחְזֵ֣ק (and have taken hold) בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ (of your hand),

וְאֶצָּרְךָ֗ (and watched over you) וְאֶתֶּנְךָ֛ (and given you)

לִבְרִ֥ית (as a covenant to) עָ֖ם (the people),

לְא֥וֹר (as a light to) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations);

7  לִפְקֹ֖חַ (to open) עֵינַ֣יִם (eyes), עִוְר֑וֹת (of the blind)

לְהוֹצִ֤יא (to bring out) מִמַּסְגֵּר֙ (from the dungeon), אַסִּ֔יר (the prisoner)

מִבֵּ֥ית (and from the house). כֶּ֖לֶא (Of confinement)

יֹ֥שְׁבֵי (those sitting in) חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ (darkness).

8  אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH),

ה֣וּא (that is) שְׁמִ֑י (My name);

וּכְבוֹדִי֙ (and My glory) לְאַחֵ֣ר (to another), לֹֽא־ (not) אֶתֵּ֔ן (I will give)

וּתְהִלָּתִ֖י (or My praise) לַפְּסִילִֽים׃ (to the idols).

9  הָרִֽאשֹׁנ֖וֹת (The former things) הִנֵּה־ (behold), בָ֑אוּ (they have come),

וַֽחֲדָשׁוֹת֙ (and new things) אֲנִ֣י (I) מַגִּ֔יד (am declaring);

בְּטֶ֥רֶם (before) תִּצְמַ֖חְנָה (they spring forth)

אַשְׁמִ֥יע (I proclaim them) אֶתְכֶֽם׃פ (you⁺).

10  שִׁ֤ירוּ (Sing) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) שִׁ֣יר (a song), חָדָ֔שׁ (new)

תְּהִלָּת֖וֹ (His praise) מִקְצֵ֣ה (from the end) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth),

יוֹרְדֵ֤י (those going down) הַיָּם֙ (to the sea), וּמְלֹא֔וֹ (and all that is in it);

אִיִּ֖ים (the islands), וְיֹשְׁבֵיהֶֽם׃ (and those dwelling in them).

11  יִשְׂא֤וּ (Let lift up) מִדְבָּר֙ (the wilderness) וְעָרָ֔יו (and its cities)

חֲצֵרִ֖ים (the villages) תֵּשֵׁ֣ב (where dwells). קֵדָ֑ר (Kedar)

יָרֹ֙נּוּ֙ (let sing), יֹ֣שְׁבֵי (the dwellers) סֶ֔לַע (of Sela)

מֵרֹ֥אשׁ (from the top) הָרִ֖ים (of the mountains) יִצְוָֽחוּ׃ (let them shout).

12  יָשִׂ֥ימוּ (Let them give) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH), כָּב֑וֹד (glory)

וּתְהִלָּת֖וֹ (and His praise) בָּאִיִּ֥ים (in the islands) יַגִּֽידוּ׃ (declare).

13  יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) כַּגִּבּ֣וֹר (like a mighty one), יֵצֵ֔א (goes forth)

כְּאִ֥ישׁ (like a man) מִלְחָמ֖וֹת (of war). יָעִ֣יר (He stirs up) קִנְאָ֑ה (zeal)

יָרִ֙יעַ֙ (He shouts), אַף־ (yes), יַצְרִ֔יחַ (He roars);

עַל־ (over) אֹיְבָ֖יו (His enemies) יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ס (He will prevail).

14  הֶחֱשֵׁ֙יתִי֙ (I have been silent); מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם (from ages past)

אַחֲרִ֖ישׁ (I have been still), אֶתְאַפָּ֑ק (and restrained Myself);

כַּיּוֹלֵדָ֣ה (like a woman in labor); אֶפְעֶ֔ה (I will groan)

אֶשֹּׁ֥ם (I will gasp) וְאֶשְׁאַ֖ף (and pant) יָֽחַד׃ (at once).

15  אַחֲרִ֤יב (I will lay waste) הָרִים֙ (the mountains) וּגְבָע֔וֹת (and hills),

וְכָל־ (and all) עֶשְׂבָּ֖ם (their vegetation); אוֹבִ֑ישׁ (I will dry up)

וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י (and I will turn) נְהָרוֹת֙ (the rivers) לָֽאִיִּ֔ים (into islands),

וַאֲגַמִּ֖ים (and the pools) אוֹבִֽישׁ׃ (I will dry up).

16  וְהוֹלַכְתִּ֣י (And I will bring) עִוְרִ֗ים (the blind) בְּדֶ֙רֶךְ֙ (by a way) לֹ֣א (not); יָדָ֔עוּ (they did know)

בִּנְתִיב֥וֹת (and by paths) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדְע֖וּ (they have known); אַדְרִיכֵ֑ם (I will lead them)

אָשִׂים֩ (I will turn) מַחְשָׁ֨ךְ (the darkness) לִפְנֵיהֶ֜ם (before their faces) לָא֗וֹר (into light)

וּמַֽעֲקַשִּׁים֙ (and the crooked places) לְמִישׁ֔וֹר (into level ground).

אֵ֚לֶּה (These are) הַדְּבָרִ֔ים (the things) עֲשִׂיתִ֖ם (I will do for them)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) עֲזַבְתִּֽים׃ (will I forsake them).

17  נָסֹ֤גוּ (They will be turned) אָחוֹר֙ (back),

יֵבֹ֣שׁוּ (they are put to shame) בֹ֔שֶׁת (shame),

הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים (those trusting) בַּפָּ֑סֶל (in the idols),

הָאֹמְרִ֥ים (those saying) לְמַסֵּכָ֖ה (to molten images), אַתֶּ֥ם (You⁺ are) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ס (are our gods).

18  הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים (O deaf ones);

Israel Is Deaf and Blindשְׁמָ֑עוּ (Listen),

וְהַעִוְרִ֖ים (and O blind ones), הַבִּ֥יטוּ (look), לִרְאֽוֹת׃ (in order to see).

19  מִ֤י (Who is) עִוֵּר֙ (blind), כִּ֣י (for) אִם־ (but) עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant)?

וְחֵרֵ֖שׁ (Or deaf), כְּמַלְאָכִ֣י (like My messenger) אֶשְׁלָ֑ח (I am sending)?

מִ֤י (Who is) עִוֵּר֙ (blind) כִּמְשֻׁלָּ֔ם (like Meshullam),

וְעִוֵּ֖ר (or blind) כְּעֶ֥בֶד (like the servant) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)?

20  רָאִיתָ (Seeing) רַבּ֖וֹת (many things), וְלֹ֣א (you do not); תִשְׁמֹ֑ר (keep watch)

פָּק֥וֹחַ (opening) אָזְנַ֖יִם (the ears), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִשְׁמָֽע׃ (he hears).

21  יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) חָפֵ֖ץ (delights) לְמַ֣עַן (on account) צִדְק֑וֹ (of His righteousness)

יַגְדִּ֥יל (to magnify) תּוֹרָ֖ה (the law), וְיַאְדִּֽיר׃ (and make it glorious).

22  וְהוּא֮ (And it is) עַם־ (a people) בָּז֣וּז (robbed) וְשָׁסוּי֒ (and plundered);

הָפֵ֤חַ (are trapped) בַּֽחוּרִים֙ (in holes), כֻּלָּ֔ם (all of them)

וּבְבָתֵּ֥י (or in houses); כְלָאִ֖ים (of prisoners) הָחְבָּ֑אוּ (they are hidden)

הָי֤וּ (they have become) לָבַז֙ (a spoil), וְאֵ֣ין (with no) מַצִּ֔יל (rescue);

מְשִׁסָּ֖ה (a plunder), וְאֵין־ (and no one) אֹמֵ֥ר (is saying), הָשַֽׁב׃ (Send them back).

23  מִ֥י (Who) בָכֶ֖ם (among you⁺) יַאֲזִ֣ין (will give ear) זֹ֑את (to this)?

יַקְשִׁ֥ב (Who will listen) וְיִשְׁמַ֖ע (and obey) לְאָחֽוֹר׃ (hereafter)?

24  מִֽי־ (Who) נָתַ֨ן (gave) לִמְשׁוֹסֶה (as plunder) יַעֲקֹ֛ב (Jacob)

וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (and Israel) לְבֹזְזִ֖ים (to those plundering)?

הֲל֣וֹא (Was it not) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)

ז֚וּ (whom) חָטָ֣אנוּ (we have sinned)? ל֔וֹ (Against)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) אָב֤וּ (were they willing) בִדְרָכָיו֙ (in His ways), הָל֔וֹךְ (to walk)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (would they hear) בְּתוֹרָתֽוֹ׃ (His law).

25  וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ךְ (And He poured out) עָלָיו֙ (on him) חֵמָ֣ה (the heat) אַפּ֔וֹ (of His nose),

וֶעֱז֖וּז (and the fierceness) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (of battle);

וַתְּלַהֲטֵ֤הוּ (and it has set him on fire) מִסָּבִיב֙ (all around),

וְלֹ֣א (not); יָדָ֔ע (did know it)

וַתִּבְעַר־ (and it burned) בּ֖וֹ (him)

וְלֹא־ (and not) יָשִׂ֥ים (did he set it) עַל־ (upon) לֵֽב׃פ (his heart).
