David Instructs Solomon
(Psalm 37:1–40)

1  וַיִּקְרְב֥וּ (And drew near) יְמֵֽי־ (the days) דָוִ֖ד (of David) לָמ֑וּת (to die), וַיְצַ֛ו (and he commanded) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (Solomon) בְנ֖וֹ (his son), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  אָנֹכִ֣י (I) הֹלֵ֔ךְ (am going) בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ (the way) כָּל־ (of all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth). וְחָזַקְתָּ֖ (And you shall be strong) וְהָיִ֥יתָֽ (and you shall become) לְאִֽישׁ׃ (a man). 3  וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֞ (And you shall keep) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת׀ (the charge) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God) לָלֶ֤כֶת (to walk) בִּדְרָכָיו֙ (in His ways), לִשְׁמֹ֨ר (to keep) חֻקֹּתָ֤יו (His statutes), מִצְוֺתָיו֙ (His commandments), וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו (and His ordinances), וְעֵדְוֺתָ֔יו (and His testimonies), כַּכָּת֖וּב (as it is written) בְּתוֹרַ֣ת (in the Law) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (of Moses), לְמַ֣עַן (that) תַּשְׂכִּ֗יל (you may prosper) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (in all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה (you do), וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (wherever) תִּפְנֶ֖ה (you turn) שָֽׁם׃ (in it), 4  לְמַעַן֩ (so that) יָקִ֨ים (may fulfill) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָר֗וֹ (His word) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (He spoke) עָלַי֮ (concerning me) לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), אִם־ (If) יִשְׁמְר֨וּ (take heed) בָנֶ֜יךָ (your sons) אֶת־ (to) דַּרְכָּ֗ם (their way), לָלֶ֤כֶת (to walk) לְפָנַי֙ (before Me) בֶּאֱמֶ֔ת (in truth) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבָבָ֖ם (their heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשָׁ֑ם (their soul), לֵאמֹ֕ר (He said) לֹֽא־ (Not) יִכָּרֵ֤ת (shall be cut off) לְךָ֙ (to you) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) מֵעַ֖ל (on) כִּסֵּ֥א (the throne) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

5  וְגַ֣ם (And also) אַתָּ֣ה (you) יָדַ֡עְתָּ (know) אֵת֩ (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָ֨שָׂה (did) לִ֜י (to me) יוֹאָ֣ב (Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֗ה (of Zeruiah), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (and what) עָשָׂ֣ה (he did) לִשְׁנֵֽי־ (to the two) שָׂרֵ֣י (commanders) צִבְא֣וֹת (of the hosts) יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל (of Israel), לְאַבְנֵ֨ר (to Abner) בֶּן־ (son) נֵ֜ר (of Ner) וְלַעֲמָשָׂ֤א (and Amasa) בֶן־ (son) יֶ֙תֶר֙ (of Jether), וַיַּ֣הַרְגֵ֔ם (and he killed them) וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and made) דְּמֵֽי־ (the blood) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (of war) בְּשָׁלֹ֑ם (in peacetime), וַיִּתֵּ֞ן (and he put) דְּמֵ֣י (the blood) מִלְחָמָ֗ה (of war) בַּחֲגֹֽרָתוֹ֙ (on his belt) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בְּמָתְנָ֔יו (around his waist), וּֽבְנַעֲל֖וֹ (and on his sandal) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) בְּרַגְלָֽיו׃ (on his feet). 6  וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ (And you shall do) כְּחָכְמָתֶ֑ךָ (according to your wisdom), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תוֹרֵ֧ד (do let go down) שֵׂיבָת֛וֹ (his gray hair) בְּשָׁלֹ֖ם (in peace) שְׁאֹֽל׃ס (to Sheol).

7  וְלִבְנֵ֨י (And to the sons) בַרְזִלַּ֤י (of Barzillai) הַגִּלְעָדִי֙ (the Gileadite), תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (show) חֶ֔סֶד (loving devotion) וְהָי֖וּ (and let them be) בְּאֹכְלֵ֣י (among those who eat) שֻׁלְחָנֶ֑ךָ (at your table); כִּי־ (for) כֵן֙ (so) קָרְב֣וּ (they drew near) אֵלַ֔י (to me) בְּבָרְחִ֕י (when I fled) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from) אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם (Absalom) אָחִֽיךָ׃ (your brother).

8  וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And behold), עִ֠מְּךָ (with you) שִֽׁמְעִ֨י (is Shimei) בֶן־ (son) גֵּרָ֥א (of Gera), בֶן־ (the Ben-) הַיְמִינִי֮ (jaminite) מִבַּחֻרִים֒ (from Bahurim). וְה֤וּא (And he) קִֽלְלַ֙נִי֙ (cursed me) קְלָלָ֣ה (with a curse) נִמְרֶ֔צֶת (bitter) בְּי֖וֹם (in the day) לֶכְתִּ֣י (when I went) מַחֲנָ֑יִם (to Mahanaim). וְהֽוּא־ (And he) יָרַ֤ד (came down) לִקְרָאתִי֙ (to meet me) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (at the Jordan), וָאֶשָּׁ֨בַֽע (and I swore) ל֤וֹ (to him) בַֽיהוָה֙ (by YHWH), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), אִם־ (Not) אֲמִֽיתְךָ֖ (I will put you to death) בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ (by the sword). 9  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) אַל־ (not) תְּנַקֵּ֔הוּ (do hold him guiltless), כִּ֛י (for) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) חָכָ֖ם (wise) אָ֑תָּה (you are), וְיָֽדַעְתָּ֙ (and you will know) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (what) תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (you ought to do) לּ֔וֹ (to him), וְהוֹרַדְתָּ֧ (and you shall bring down) אֶת־ (-) שֵׂיבָת֛וֹ (his gray hair) בְּדָ֖ם (in blood) שְׁאֽוֹל׃ (to Sheol).

David’s Reign and Death
(1 Chronicles 29:26–30)

10  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And rested) דָּוִ֖ד (David) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר (and was buried) בְּעִ֥יר (in the City) דָּוִֽד׃פ (of David). 11  וְהַיָּמִ֗ים (And the days) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) מָלַ֤ךְ (reigned) דָּוִד֙ (David) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אַרְבָּעִ֖ים (were forty) שָׁנָ֑ה (years)— בְּחֶבְר֤וֹן (in Hebron) מָלַךְ֙ (he reigned) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם (and in Jerusalem) מָלַ֔ךְ (he reigned) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ (and three) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years).

12  וּשְׁלֹמֹ֕ה (And Solomon) יָשַׁ֕ב (sat) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּ֖א (the throne) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַתִּכֹּ֥ן (and was established) מַלְכֻת֖וֹ (his kingdom) מְאֹֽד׃ (firmly).

The Execution of Adonijah

13  וַיָּבֹ֞א (And came) אֲדֹנִיָּ֣הוּ (Adonijah) בֶן־ (son) חַגֵּ֗ית (of Haggith) אֶל־ (to) בַּת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֙בַע֙ (sheba) אֵם־ (the mother) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon), וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (and she said), הֲשָׁל֣וֹם (In peace) בֹּאֶ֑ךָ (do you come)?

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), שָׁלֽוֹם׃ (In peace). 14  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said) דָּבָ֥ר (A word) לִ֖י (to me) אֵלָ֑יִךְ (is to you).

וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (And she said), דַּבֵּֽר׃ (Speak).

15  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), אַ֤תְּ (You) יָדַ֙עַתְּ֙ (know) כִּי־ (that) לִי֙ (mine) הָיְתָ֣ה (was) הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה (the kingdom), וְעָלַ֞י (and on me) שָׂ֧מוּ (had set) כָֽל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם (their faces) לִמְלֹ֑ךְ (that I should reign). וַתִּסֹּ֤ב (And has been turned over) הַמְּלוּכָה֙ (the kingdom), וַתְּהִ֣י (and has become) לְאָחִ֔י (to my brother), כִּ֥י (for) מֵיְהוָ֖ה (from YHWH) הָ֥יְתָה (it has come) לּֽוֹ׃ (to him). 16  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And) שְׁאֵלָ֤ה (request) אַחַת֙ (one) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) שֹׁאֵ֣ל (ask) מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ (of you); אַל־ (not) תָּשִׁ֖בִי (do deny) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֑י (me).

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר (And she said) אֵלָ֖יו (to him), דַּבֵּֽר׃ (Speak).

17  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), אִמְרִי־ (Speak), נָא֙ (please), לִשְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (to Solomon) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the King), כִּ֥י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) יָשִׁ֖יב (he will refuse) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֑יִךְ (you), וְיִתֶּן־ (that he may give) לִ֛י (to me) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִישַׁ֥ג (Abishag) הַשּׁוּנַמִּ֖ית (Shunammitess) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (for a wife).

18  וַתֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) בַּת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֖בַע (sheba), ט֑וֹב (Good). אָנֹכִ֕י (I) אֲדַבֵּ֥ר (will speak) עָלֶ֖יךָ (for you) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).

19  וַתָּבֹ֤א (And came in) בַת־ (Bath-) שֶׁ֙בַע֙ (sheba) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon), לְדַבֶּר־ (to speak) ל֖וֹ (to him) עַל־ (for) אֲדֹנִיָּ֑הוּ (Adonijah). וַיָּקָם֩ (And rose up) הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (the king) לִקְרָאתָ֜הּ (to meet her), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֣חוּ (and he bowed low) לָ֗הּ (to her), וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and sat down) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֔וֹ (his throne), וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (and he set) כִּסֵּא֙ (a throne) לְאֵ֣ם (for the mother) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king). וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב (And she sat) לִֽימִינֽוֹ׃ (at his right hand).

20  וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (And she said), שְׁאֵלָ֨ה (Request) אַחַ֤ת (one) קְטַנָּה֙ (small) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) שֹׁאֶ֣לֶת (desire) מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ (of you). אַל־ (Not) תָּ֖שֶׁב (do turn back) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֑י (my face).

וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (And said) לָ֤הּ (to her) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king), שַׁאֲלִ֣י (Ask it), אִמִּ֔י (my mother), כִּ֥י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) אָשִׁ֖יב (I will turn back) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָֽיִךְ׃ (your face).

21  וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (And she said), יֻתַּ֖ן (Let be given) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִישַׁ֣ג (Abishag) הַשֻּׁנַמִּ֑ית (the Shunammitess) לַאֲדֹנִיָּ֥הוּ (to Adonijah) אָחִ֖יךָ (your brother) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife).

22  וַיַּעַן֩ (And answered) הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לְאִמּ֗וֹ (to his mother), וְלָמָה֩ (And why) אַ֨תְּ (you) שֹׁאֶ֜לֶת (do ask) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִישַׁ֤ג (Abishag) הַשֻּׁנַמִּית֙ (the Shunammitess) לַאֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ (for Adonijah)? וְשַֽׁאֲלִי־ (And also ask) לוֹ֙ (for him) אֶת־ (-) הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה (the kingdom)— כִּ֛י (for) ה֥וּא (he is) אָחִ֖י (brother) הַגָּד֣וֹל (older) מִמֶּ֑נִּי (to me)— וְלוֹ֙ (even for him) וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֣ר (and for Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וּלְיוֹאָ֖ב (and for Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָֽה׃פ (of Zeruiah).

23  וַיִּשָּׁבַע֙ (And swore) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) בַּֽיהוָ֖ה (by YHWH), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כֹּ֣ה (Thus) יַֽעֲשֶׂה־ (may do) לִּ֤י (to me) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) וְכֹ֣ה (and thus) יוֹסִ֔יף (may He add), כִּ֣י (if) בְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ (against his own life) דִּבֶּר֙ (has not spoken) אֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ (Adonijah) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the word) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 24  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) חַי־ (as lives) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) הֱכִינַ֗נִי (has confirmed me) וַיּוֹשִׁיבִינִי (and set me) עַל־ (on) כִּסֵּא֙ (the throne) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֔י (my father), וַאֲשֶׁ֧ר (and who) עָֽשָׂה־ (has established) לִ֛י (for me) בַּ֖יִת (a house) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבֵּ֑ר (He promised), כִּ֣י (surely) הַיּ֔וֹם (today) יוּמַ֖ת (shall be put to death) אֲדֹנִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Adonijah).

25  וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ (And sent) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand) בְּנָיָ֣הוּ (of Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע (of Jehoiada), וַיִּפְגַּע־ (and he struck down) בּ֖וֹ (him), וַיָּמֹֽת׃ס (and he died).

26  וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֨ר (And to Abiathar) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אָמַ֣ר (said) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king), עֲנָתֹת֙ (To Anathoth) לֵ֣ךְ (go), עַל־ (to) שָׂדֶ֔יךָ (your own fields). כִּ֛י (For) אִ֥ישׁ (deserving) מָ֖וֶת (of death) אָ֑תָּה (you are), וּבַיּ֨וֹם (and at the time) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) לֹ֣א (not) אֲמִיתֶ֗ךָ (I will put you to death), כִּֽי־ (because) נָשָׂ֜אתָ (you carried) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֨וֹן (the ark) אֲדֹנָ֤י (of the Lord) יְהֹוִה֙ (YHWH) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) דָּוִ֣ד (David) אָבִ֔י (my father), וְכִ֣י (and because) הִתְעַנִּ֔יתָ (you were afflicted) בְּכֹ֥ל (in all) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that) הִתְעַנָּ֖ה (was afflicted) אָבִֽי׃ (my father). 27  וַיְגָ֤רֶשׁ (And removed) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) אֶבְיָתָ֔ר (Abiathar) מִהְי֥וֹת (from being) כֹּהֵ֖ן (priest) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), לְמַלֵּא֙ (that he might fulfill) אֶת־ (-) דְּבַ֣ר (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֶּ֛ר (He spoke) עַל־ (concerning) בֵּ֥ית (the house) עֵלִ֖י (of Eli) בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃פ (at Shiloh).

The Execution of Joab

28  וְהַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ (And the report) בָּ֣אָה (came) עַד־ (to) יוֹאָ֔ב (Joab), כִּ֣י (for) יוֹאָ֗ב (Joab) נָטָה֙ (had turned aside) אַחֲרֵ֣י (to) אֲדֹנִיָּ֔ה (Adonijah), וְאַחֲרֵ֥י (and after) אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם (Absalom) לֹ֣א (not) נָטָ֑ה (he had turned aside). וַיָּ֤נָס (And fled) יוֹאָב֙ (Joab) אֶל־ (to) אֹ֣הֶל (the tabernacle) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וַֽיַּחֲזֵ֖ק (and took hold) בְּקַרְנ֥וֹת (of the horns) הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (of the altar).

29  וַיֻּגַּ֞ד (And it was declared) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (to King) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) כִּ֣י (that) נָ֤ס (has fled) יוֹאָב֙ (Joab) אֶל־ (to) אֹ֣הֶל (the tabernacle) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וְהִנֵּ֖ה (and behold) אֵ֣צֶל (he was by) הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (the altar).

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (And sent) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) בְּנָיָ֧הוּ (Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע (of Jehoiada), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), לֵ֥ךְ (Go), פְּגַע־ (fall) בּֽוֹ׃ (upon him).

30  וַיָּבֹ֨א (And went) בְנָיָ֜הוּ (Benaiah) אֶל־ (to) אֹ֣הֶל (the tabernacle) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king): צֵ֔א (Come out).

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר׀ (And he said), לֹ֖א (No), כִּ֣י (but) פֹ֣ה (here) אָמ֑וּת (I will die).

וַיָּ֨שֶׁב (And brought back) בְּנָיָ֤הוּ (Benaiah) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (to the king) דָּבָ֣ר (word) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) דִבֶּ֥ר (said) יוֹאָ֖ב (Joab), וְכֹ֥ה (and thus) עָנָֽנִי׃ (he answered me).

31  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) ל֣וֹ (to him) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king), עֲשֵׂה֙ (Do) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבֶּ֔ר (he has said) וּפְגַע־ (and strike down) בּ֖וֹ (him) וּקְבַרְתּ֑וֹ (and bury him), וַהֲסִירֹ֣תָ׀ (that you may take away) דְּמֵ֣י (the blood) חִנָּ֗ם (innocent) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) שָׁפַ֣ךְ (shed) יוֹאָ֔ב (Joab) מֵעָלַ֕י (from me) וּמֵעַ֖ל (and from) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אָבִֽי׃ (of my father). 32  וְהֵשִׁיב֩ (And will return) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דָּמ֜וֹ (his blood) עַל־ (on) רֹאשׁ֗וֹ (his head), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (because) פָּגַ֣ע (he struck down) בִּשְׁנֵֽי־ (two) אֲ֠נָשִׁים (men) צַדִּקִ֨ים (more righteous) וְטֹבִ֤ים (and better) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (than he) וַיַּהַרְגֵ֣ם (and he killed them) בַּחֶ֔רֶב (with the sword)— וְאָבִ֥י (and my father) דָוִ֖ד (David) לֹ֣א (not) יָדָ֑ע (did know it)— אֶת־ (-) אַבְנֵ֤ר (Abner) בֶּן־ (son) נֵר֙ (of Ner), שַׂר־ (the commander) צְבָ֣א (of the army) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְאֶת־ (and) עֲמָשָׂ֥א (Amasa) בֶן־ (son) יֶ֖תֶר (of Jether), שַׂר־ (the commander) צְבָ֥א (of the army) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 33  וְשָׁ֤בוּ (And shall return) דְמֵיהֶם֙ (their blood) בְּרֹ֣אשׁ (upon the head) יוֹאָ֔ב (of Joab) וּבְרֹ֥אשׁ (and upon the head) זַרְע֖וֹ (of his seed) לְעֹלָ֑ם (forever). וּלְדָוִ֡ד (And upon David) וּ֠לְזַרְעוֹ (and his seed), וּלְבֵית֨וֹ (and upon his house) וּלְכִסְא֜וֹ (and his throne), יִהְיֶ֥ה (there shall be) שָׁל֛וֹם (peace) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever) מֵעִ֥ם (from) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

34  וַיַּ֗עַל (And went up) בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada) וַיִּפְגַּע־ (and struck) בּ֖וֹ (him) וַיְמִתֵ֑הוּ (and killed him), וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר (and he was buried) בְּבֵית֖וֹ (in his own house) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 35  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And put) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) בְּנָיָ֧הוּ (Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע (of Jehoiada) תַּחְתָּ֖יו (in his place) עַל־ (over) הַצָּבָ֑א (the army), וְאֶת־ (and) צָד֤וֹק (Zadok) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) נָתַ֣ן (put) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) תַּ֖חַת (in the place) אֶבְיָתָֽר׃ (of Abiathar).

The Execution of Shimei

36  וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) וַיִּקְרָ֣א (and called) לְשִׁמְעִ֔י (for Shimei), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) ל֗וֹ (to him), בְּֽנֵה־ (Build) לְךָ֥ (for yourself) בַ֙יִת֙ (a house) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (in Jerusalem) וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ (and dwell) שָׁ֑ם (there), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תֵצֵ֥א (do go out) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) אָ֥נֶה (where) וָאָֽנָה׃ (and where). 37  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (For it will come to pass), בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) צֵאתְךָ֗ (you go out) וְעָֽבַרְתָּ֙ (and pass over) אֶת־ (-) נַ֣חַל (the Brook) קִדְר֔וֹן (Kidron), יָדֹ֥עַ (that knowing) תֵּדַ֖ע (you will know) כִּ֣י (that) מ֣וֹת (dying) תָּמ֑וּת (you will die); דָּמְךָ֖ (your blood) יִהְיֶ֥ה (will be) בְרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃ (on your own head).

38  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) שִׁמְעִ֤י (Shimei) לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (to the king), ט֣וֹב (Good) הַדָּבָ֔ר (the saying is). כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (As) דִּבֶּר֙ (has said) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), כֵּ֖ן (so) יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (will do) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant). וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב (And dwelt) שִׁמְעִ֛י (Shimei) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem) יָמִ֥ים (days) רַבִּֽים׃ס (many).

39  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּץ֙ (at the end) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (of three) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) וַיִּבְרְח֤וּ (that fled) שְׁנֵֽי־ (two) עֲבָדִים֙ (slaves) לְשִׁמְעִ֔י (of Shimei) אֶל־ (to) אָכִ֥ישׁ (Achish) בֶּֽן־ (son) מַעֲכָ֖ה (of Maacah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) גַּ֑ת (of Gath). וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ (And they declared) לְשִׁמְעִי֙ (to Shimei), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (your slaves are) בְּגַֽת׃ (in Gath).

40  וַיָּ֣קָם (And arose) שִׁמְעִ֗י (Shimei) וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ (and saddled) אֶת־ (-) חֲמֹר֔וֹ (his donkey) וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (and went) גַּ֙תָה֙ (to Gath) אֶל־ (to) אָכִ֔ישׁ (Achish) לְבַקֵּ֖שׁ (to seek) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָ֑יו (his slaves). וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) שִׁמְעִ֔י (Shimei) וַיָּבֵ֥א (and brought) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָ֖יו (his slaves) מִגַּֽת׃ (from Gath).

41  וַיֻּגַּ֖ד (And it was told) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (to Solomon) כִּי־ (that) הָלַ֨ךְ (had gone) שִׁמְעִ֧י (Shimei) מִירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם (from Jerusalem) גַּ֖ת (to Gath), וַיָּשֹֽׁב׃ (and had returned). 42  וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (And sent) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) וַיִּקְרָ֣א (and called) לְשִׁמְעִ֗י (for Shimei), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), הֲל֧וֹא (Did not) הִשְׁבַּעְתִּ֣יךָ (I make you swear) בַֽיהוָ֗ה (by YHWH) וָאָעִ֤ד (and give warning) בְּךָ֙ (to you), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), בְּי֣וֹם (On the day) צֵאתְךָ֗ (of your going out) וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֙ (when you travel) אָ֣נֶה (where) וָאָ֔נָה (and where), יָדֹ֥עַ (knowing) תֵּדַ֖ע (You will surely know) כִּ֣י (that) מ֣וֹת (dying) תָּמ֑וּת (you will die)’ וַתֹּ֧אמֶר (and you said) אֵלַ֛י (to me), ט֥וֹב (Good) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the word is). שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ (I have heard). 43  וּמַדּ֕וּעַ (And why) לֹ֣א (not) שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ (have you kept) אֵ֖ת (-) שְׁבֻעַ֣ת (the oath) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּצְוָ֖ה (the commandment) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוִּ֥יתִי (I commanded) עָלֶֽיךָ׃ (concerning you).

44  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) אֶל־ (to) שִׁמְעִ֗י (Shimei), אַתָּ֤ה (You) יָדַ֙עְתָּ֙ (know) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֗ה (the evil) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יָדַע֙ (has known) לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ (your heart) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשִׂ֖יתָ (you did) לְדָוִ֣ד (to David) אָבִ֑י (my father); וְהֵשִׁ֧יב (and will return) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) רָעָתְךָ֖ (your evil) בְּרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃ (on your head). 45  וְהַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (And King) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) בָּר֑וּךְ (is blessed), וְכִסֵּ֣א (and the throne) דָוִ֗ד (of David) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) נָכ֛וֹן (established) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

46  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada), וַיֵּצֵ֕א (and he went out) וַיִּפְגַּע־ (and struck down) בּ֖וֹ (him), וַיָּמֹ֑ת (and he died). וְהַמַּמְלָכָ֥ה (And the kingdom) נָכ֖וֹנָה (was established) בְּיַד־ (in the hand) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (of Solomon).
