An End to Idolatry

“On that day

God will act decisively for Jerusalem following the national mourning described in the preceding passage. The promised cleansing belongs to the future restoration of Israel under the Messiah.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet…
Jol 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood…
Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch…

a fountain will be opened

God will provide a permanent and sufficient means of cleansing, replacing the temporary ceremonial washings and sacrifices required under the Law.

Jhn 19:34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear,…
Jhn 4:14 But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.…
Jhn 7:37-39 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up…

to the house of David and the people of Jerusalem,

The promise includes David’s royal line and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, identifying Israel as the immediate recipients of this future work of restoration.

2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever…
Jer 33:14-17 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Ezk 37:24-25 My servant David will be king over them,…

to cleanse them from sin and impurity.

The fountain addresses both guilt before God and the defilement caused by sin, highlighting the need for spiritual purification. Its ultimate provision is found in the sacrificial death of the Messiah, whose atonement accomplishes the cleansing anticipated by Zechariah.

Psa 51:2 Wash me clean of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Ezk 36:25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you,…
Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…

And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,

God announces a future time of decisive intervention, when His authority over Israel and all opposing powers will be openly displayed.

Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…
Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

I will erase the names of the idols from the land,

The false gods that had repeatedly drawn Israel into rebellion will be removed completely.

Hos 2:17 For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals;…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…
Exo 23:13 Pay close attention to everything I have said to you.…

and they will no longer be remembered.

Their worship, reputation, and influence will disappear from the land.

Isa 26:14 The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise.…
Jos 23:7 So you are not to associate with these nations that remain…
Psa 16:4 Sorrows will multiply to those who chase other gods.…

I will also remove the prophets

False prophets, who claimed divine authority while leading the people away from God, will no longer deceive the nation.

Ezk 14:9 But if the prophet is enticed to speak a message,…
Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
1Ki 18:40 Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal!”…

and the spirit of impurity from the land.

The corrupt spiritual influence behind idolatry, false worship, and religious deception will be driven out as God cleanses His people.

Isa 4:4 when the Lord has washed away the filth…
Ezk 36:25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you,…

And if anyone still prophesies,

In the restored community, false prophecy will have no place. Anyone who claims divine authority for lies will be treated as openly rebelling against the LORD.

Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
1Ki 22:22-23 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit…

his father and mother who bore him will say to him,

Even his own father and mother, who gave him life, will acknowledge that his false prophecy threatens the community and dishonors the LORD.

Deu 13:6-9 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Deu 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son…
Mat 10:21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father…

‘You shall not remain alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’

Claiming to speak for God when He has not spoken is a grave offense. Under the covenant law, such deception was punishable by death because it led people away from truth and toward rebellion.

Jer 29:21-23 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…

When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will pierce him through.

The judgment portrays complete zeal for the cleansing of God’s people. False religion, deception, and every claim made falsely in the LORD’s name will be decisively removed.

Lev 24:14-16 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Deu 17:2-7 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…
1Ki 18:40 Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal!”…

And on that day

God will bring a future cleansing in Israel, removing idolatry and exposing every form of false worship.

Zec 14:4 On that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives…
Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…
Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine…

every prophet who prophesies

Those who have claimed divine authority without God’s commission will no longer be accepted or protected.

Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…

will be ashamed of his vision,

Their false messages will be exposed, and they will recognize the disgrace of having misled the people.

Mic 3:6-7 Therefore night will come over you without visions…
Ezk 12:24 For there will be no more false visions,…
Isa 28:7 These also stagger from wine and stumble…

and he will not put on a hairy cloak

Prophetic clothing, once associated with men such as Elijah, will no longer be used to create an appearance of spiritual authority.

2Ki 1:8 “He was a hairy man,” they answered, “with a leather belt…”…
Mat 3:4 John wore a garment of camel’s hair, with a leather belt…
Mrk 1:6 John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt……

in order to deceive.

The era of counterfeit prophecy will end as God purifies His people and removes those who use His name for deception.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets. They come to you…
Mat 24:11 and many false prophets will arise and deceive many.
Jer 23:32 “Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those…

He will say, ‘I am not a prophet;

When false prophecy is exposed, those who once claimed divine authority will disown the office and seek to hide their former deception.

Jhn 1:21 “Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?”…
Jer 1:6 “Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak,…
Num 11:29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous on my account?”…

I work the land,

He portrays himself as an ordinary laborer whose life is tied to the fields rather than to prophetic claims.

Amo 7:14 “I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son…”…
1Ki 19:19 So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat.…
Pro 28:19 The one who works his land will have plenty of food,…

for I was purchased as a servant in my youth.’

His account emphasizes a lifetime of humble service and labor, intended to show that he has no standing or history as a prophet.

Gen 39:1 Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt,…
Gen 37:28 So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers…
Gen 37:2 This is the account of Jacob. When Joseph was seventeen…

If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?’

In the cleansing of Israel, false prophets will no longer hide behind religious claims or practices associated with idolatry. The wounds expose a past connected with pagan rites and deceptive prophecy, bringing their former conduct into the open.

1Ki 18:28 So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives…
Jer 16:6 “Both great and small will die in this land.…
Deu 14:1 You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves…

he will answer, ‘These are the wounds I received in the house of my friends.’

The false prophet attempts to explain the marks as injuries received among those close to him rather than evidence of his former idolatrous practices. The answer reflects the shame and exposure of those who once misled others. The language of wounds received among friends also anticipates the rejection and suffering of the Messiah at the hands of His own people.

Pro 27:6 The wounds of a friend are faithful, but…
Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Psa 55:12-14 For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure.…

The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,

God calls for judgment to fall upon the Shepherd He has appointed. The sword represents the death Christ would endure under the Father’s sovereign purpose.

Isa 53:10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush Him…
Jhn 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd…
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life…

against the man who is My Companion,

The Shepherd is both truly man and uniquely one with God. Jesus came in human flesh while sharing the Father’s divine nature and will.

Jhn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God…
Jhn 10:30 I and the Father are one.”
Php 2:6 Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider…

declares the LORD of Hosts.

The Lord who commands heaven’s armies decrees these events. Christ’s death was not an accident or merely the work of His enemies, but part of God’s redemptive plan.

Hag 2:8 The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine…
Mal 1:4 Though Edom may say, “We have been devastated,”…
Isa 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel…

Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered,

When Jesus was arrested and crucified, His disciples fled in fear. Their scattering revealed their weakness and fulfilled what God had foretold.

Mat 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, “This very night…
Mrk 14:27 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away,…
Jhn 16:32 Look, an hour is coming and has already come……

and I will turn My hand against the little ones.

God’s hand would also come upon the frightened disciples through testing, discipline, and persecution. Though they were scattered for a time, He preserved them and established them as witnesses of the risen Christ.

Isa 1:25 I will turn My hand against you; I will thoroughly purge…
Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.…
Luk 12:32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father…

And in all the land, declares the LORD,

The judgment concerns the land of Israel and carries the certainty of God’s own decree. It belongs to the time of Israel’s final purging and restoration.

Jer 12:12 Over all the barren heights in the wilderness…
Ezk 7:2-4 “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says…
Isa 24:1-3 Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it…

two-thirds will be cut off and perish,

A vast majority of the nation will die under severe judgment. The devastation reflects the consequences of Israel’s long rejection of God and His Messiah.

Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…
Amo 9:10 All the sinners among My people will die by the sword…
Jer 15:2-3 If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them…

but a third will be left in it.

God will preserve a remnant in the land. Those who remain will pass through refining affliction, emerge as His people, and acknowledge Him as their God.

Ezk 6:8-10 Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you…
Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…
Rom 11:5 In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant…

This third I will bring through the fire;

God will preserve a remnant, this third, through the severe judgments surrounding the Day of the LORD. Their survival will not spare them from hardship, but will bring them through refining trials under His sovereign care.

Mal 3:2-3 But who can endure the day of His coming?…
Isa 48:10 See, I have refined you, but not as silver;…
1Pe 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while…

I will refine them like silver and test them like gold.

Like precious metals purified by intense heat, the remnant will be cleansed of idolatry and unbelief. Their trials will expose genuine faith and prepare them for restored fellowship with God.

Psa 66:10 For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us…
Job 23:10 Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me…
Pro 27:21 A crucible for silver and a furnace for gold,…

They will call on My name, and I will answer them.

Purified by judgment, they will turn to the LORD in sincere dependence. He will hear them and restore the covenant relationship broken by their former rebellion.

Isa 65:24 Even before they call, I will answer…
Psa 91:15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him;…
Jer 33:3 Call to Me, and I will answer and show you…

I will say, ‘They are My people,’

The LORD will again identify Israel as His own, fulfilling His promises of restoration after discipline.

Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…

and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”

The people will openly acknowledge the LORD alone as their God, marking a renewed and faithful covenant bond.

Jos 24:18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations…
Psa 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.
