Laws about Vows

Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel,

Moses delivered these instructions to Israel’s tribal leaders, who bore responsibility for administering God’s law within their families and clans. Their involvement ensured that matters affecting vows, marriage, and household authority were handled with order throughout the nation.

“This is what the LORD has commanded:

The regulations concerning vows came from the LORD, not from Moses’ personal judgment. Israel was to treat spoken commitments seriously, recognizing that vows made before God carried binding obligations.

If a man makes a vow to the LORD

Vows in Israel were voluntary but became binding once spoken. A man might vow an offering, a service, or a course of action in response to God’s provision or in seeking His help. Because the vow was made to the LORD, it carried sacred weight.

or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge,

An oath formally bound a person to fulfill a stated commitment. Calling upon God as witness made the pledge more than a private agreement; it placed the speaker under accountability before the Lord.

Lev 19:12 You must not swear falsely by My name…

he must not break his word;

Israel’s life before God required honesty and dependability. Breaking a vow dishonored the Lord whose name stood behind the promise and damaged trust among His people.

Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…

he must do everything he has promised.

The obligation extended to the full terms of the vow or oath. God required His people to treat their spoken commitments seriously, reflecting the faithfulness He Himself shows in keeping His word.

A vow was a solemn promise made before God and was not to be treated casually. It could involve dedicating something, performing an act, or accepting a restriction in devotion to the LORD.

Such a pledge created a binding personal obligation. The following instructions establish how her father’s response affected the obligation while she still lived under his authority.

An unmarried daughter remained under her father’s household authority. Her father’s knowledge of the commitment gave him responsibility to evaluate its effect on the family and its obligations before God.

His response protected the household from obligations he judged unwise or beyond its means.

then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.

Her vow was not regarded as binding if her father clearly opposed it on the day he learned of it. This provision recognized both the seriousness of vows made to the LORD and the father’s responsibility for the direction and welfare of his household.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…

The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.

She bore no guilt for failing to fulfill a vow her father lawfully annulled. The LORD accepted the father’s decision and released her from the obligation, showing that the law did not require her to carry a burden that her household authority had set aside.

If a woman marries while under a vow

A vow made before marriage remained subject to her husband’s authority once she entered his household. In Israel, vows to God were binding commitments, but the husband could confirm or cancel those that would affect the family’s obligations and resources.

or rash promise by which she has bound herself,

An impulsive pledge could place a woman under a serious obligation without adequate judgment. Her husband’s authority to annul it protected the household from unwise commitments while preserving the seriousness of vows made before God.

A married woman’s vow came under her husband’s household authority. He bore responsibility before God for the order and welfare of his family and was given the opportunity to confirm or restrain commitments that could affect the household.

But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it,

A married woman’s vow could affect the household, so the law gave her husband responsibility to review it when he became aware of it. If he prohibited it promptly upon hearing of it, the vow was nullified; he could not later overturn an obligation she had already begun to fulfill.

he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made,

If her husband nullified her vow or rash promise, she was released from its obligation. This provision protected the household from commitments made hastily or without considering their effect on the family.

God did not hold her guilty for failing to perform a vow that had been lawfully annulled under His command.

Every vow a widow or divorced woman pledges to fulfill

Widows and divorced women were no longer under a father’s or husband’s household authority and therefore bore full responsibility for vows made to the Lord. Their changed household status did not lessen the seriousness of their commitments before God.

Rom 7:2-3 For instance, a married woman is bound by law…
1Co 7:39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives.…

Such vows remained in force and were to be fulfilled. God required honesty and faithfulness from those who made promises in His name, holding each person accountable for what he or she voluntarily pledged.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…

Her vow to the Lord was a real and serious obligation, expressing personal devotion and accountability before God.

or put herself under an obligation with an oath,

Whether a voluntary vow or a binding oath, the commitment carried weight and was subject to the provisions governing vows within the family.

Mat 5:33-37 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients,…
Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth…

and her husband hears of it

A married woman’s vow was made within the covenant order of the household, where her husband bore responsibility for its consequences. His knowledge of the vow gave him the opportunity to respond.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife…
1Co 11:3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man…
Col 3:18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

but says nothing to her

Silence during the time allowed for response counted as acceptance. He could not later withdraw approval after permitting the vow to stand.

Ecc 3:7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent…
Pro 17:28 Even a fool is considered wise if he keeps silent…

and does not prohibit her,

By declining to annul it, the husband confirmed her obligation. His authority was joined to responsibility, requiring a timely and deliberate decision.

Luk 9:50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for whoever is not against…”…

then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.

Her vows and binding pledges remained valid before the Lord. What she had promised was no longer subject to cancellation and was to be fulfilled.

Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…

But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them,

Israel’s household order placed the husband under responsibility before God for commitments affecting his family. He was required to respond promptly when he learned of a vow, rather than allowing uncertainty to continue.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Ecc 5:4-6 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Pro 20:25 It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly…

then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand.

A vow made before the LORD was ordinarily binding, but the husband’s immediate objection released his wife from obligations that might prove unwise, burdensome, or harmful to the household.

Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…
Mat 5:33-37 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients,…
Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth…

Her husband has nullified them,

His decision carried legal and spiritual weight within the covenant community. By nullifying the vows at once, he assumed responsibility for the matter rather than leaving his wife bound by commitments he did not approve.

1Co 7:4 The wife does not have authority over her own body…
Eph 5:22-24 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.…
1Co 11:3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man…

and the LORD will absolve her.

God released her from the obligation of the vows, so that she bore no guilt for failing to perform what her husband had lawfully nullified.

2Sa 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned…”…
Psa 32:1-2 Of David. Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven…
Isa 43:25 I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions…

Her husband may confirm or nullify

A married woman’s vows could affect the household’s resources, obligations, and worship. God gave her husband responsibility to uphold or cancel such commitments when he learned of them, preserving order within the family and guarding against burdensome or impulsive promises.

any vow or any sworn pledge

Vows made before God were binding commitments and could not be treated casually. The provision covered every kind of vow or pledge a wife made, whether involving service, offerings, abstinence, or another obligation.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Mat 5:33-37 Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients,…

to deny herself.

Such pledges often involved voluntary self-restraint, including fasting or abstaining from lawful comforts. Her husband’s decision determined whether the commitment would stand, ensuring that personal vows did not conflict with the welfare and responsibilities of the household.

Lev 23:27 “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement.”…
Psa 35:13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth;…

But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day,

His silence from day to day indicated his acceptance of her vows. The law allowed him time to hear and consider them, but once a day passed without objection, he could not later nullify them.

Gen 24:50 Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD;……
Pro 17:28 Even a fool is considered wise if he keeps silent…

then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her.

Her commitments remained binding before the LORD, with her husband’s consent establishing their standing within the household.

Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…

He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.

The husband was responsible to respond when he learned of the vows. Silence at that time counted as confirmation, removing uncertainty about whether she was required to fulfill them.

Heb 6:16-17 Men swear by someone greater than themselves,…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Pro 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it—…

But if he nullifies them after he hears of them,

A husband or father who remained silent when he first learned of a vow confirmed it. If he later revoked it, he acted after allowing the vow to stand, disrupting the settled obligation. The law required prompt action and placed responsibility for the household’s vows upon its recognized head.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…

then he will bear her iniquity.”

The woman was released from the obligation because the man annulled it, but he became accountable for the consequences of overturning a vow that had already been confirmed by his silence. Vows made before the Lord were binding matters, and this provision upheld both family order and the seriousness of commitments made to God.
