1	THEN the whole company of them rose up, and brought him to Pilate;	Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.	Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.
2	And began to accuse him, saying, We found this man misleading our people, and forbidding to pay the head-tax to Caesar; and he says concerning himself that he is a King, even the Christ.	And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”	And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”
3	Pilate asked him and said, Are you the king of the Jews? He said to him, You say that.	And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”	So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4	Then Pilate said to the high priests and the people, I cannot find any fault against this man.	Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”	Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
5	But they shouted and said, He has stirred up our people, teaching throughout Judaea, and beginning from Galilee even to this place.	But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”	But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”
6	When Pilate heard the name Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean.	When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.	On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.
7	And when he knew that he was under the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him to Herod, because he was in Jerusalem in those days.	And when he learned that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.	When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8	When Herod saw Jesus he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things concerning him; and he hoped to see some miracle by him.	When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.	When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.
9	And he asked him many words; but Jesus gave him no answer.	So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.	He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10	But the high priests and the scribes stood, and accused him bitterly.	The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.	The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.
11	And Herod and his soldiers insulted him, and mocked him, and dressed him in a scarlet robe, and sent him to Pilate.	And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.	Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.
12	And that day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other; for there was a longstanding enmity between them.	And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.	That day Herod and Pilate became friends—before this they had been enemies.
13	Then Pilate called the high priests and the leaders of the people,	Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,	Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,
14	And he said to them, You brought me this man, as if he were misleading your people; and behold, I have examined him before your own eyes, and I have found no fault in this man concerning all that you accuse him.	and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.	and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.
15	Not even has Herod; for I sent him to him; and behold, he has done nothing worthy of death.	Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.	Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
16	I will therefore chastise him, and release him.	I will therefore punish and release him.”	Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”
17	For there was a custom to release to them one at the feast.
18	But all the people cried out saying, Get rid of him, and release to us Bar-Abbas;	But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—	But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”
19	Who because of sedition and murder which had happened in the city, was cast into prison.	a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.	(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20	Again Pilate spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.	Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus,	Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.
21	But they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.	but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!”	But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22	And he said to them the third time, What evil has he done? I have found nothing in him, worthy of death; I will therefore chastise him, and release him.	A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”	For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
23	But they persisted with loud voices, and asked to crucify him. And their voice and that of the high priests prevailed.	But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.	But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.
24	Then Pilate commanded to have their request granted.	So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.	So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
25	So he released to them the one who because of sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they asked for; and he delivered Jesus to their will.	He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.	He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
26	And while they took him away, they laid hold of Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming from the field, and they placed the end of the cross on him, to carry it with Jesus.	And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.	As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27	And many people followed him, and the women who were mourning and wailing over him.	And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.	A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.
28	But Jesus turned to them and said, O daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep over yourselves, and over your own children.	But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.	Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.
29	For behold, the days are coming, in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never gave birth, and the breasts that never gave suck.	For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’	For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’
30	Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.	Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’	Then “’they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!\|’
31	For if they do these things with the green wood, what will be done with dry wood?	For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”	For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
32	And there were coming with him two others, malefactors, to be put to death.	Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.	Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.
33	And when they came to a place which is called The Skull, they crucified him there, and the malefactors, one on his right and one on his left.	And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34	And Jesus said, O Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing. And they divided his garments and cast lots over them. 35	The people stood looking on. And even the leaders of the synagogue mocked him, and said, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God.	And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”	The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36	And the soldiers ridiculed him, as they came near him and offered him vinegar,	The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine	The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar
37	Saying to him, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.	and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”	and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38	There was also an inscription which was written over him, in Greek and Roman, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”	There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
39	Now one of the malefactors who were crucified with him, blasphemed against him, saying, If you are the Christ, save yourself and save us also.	One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”	One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40	But the other rebuked him, and said to him, Do you not fear even God, for you are also in the same judgment?	But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?	But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?
41	And ours is just, for we are paid as we deserve and as we have done; but he has done nothing wrong.	And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”	We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42	And he said to Jesus, Remember me, my Lord, when you come in your kingdom.	And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”	Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43	Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise.	And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”	Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
44	Now it was about the sixth hour, and darkness fell upon the whole earth, until the ninth hour.	It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,	It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
45	And the sun was darkened, and the door curtains of the temple were torn in the center.	while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.	for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
46	Then Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, O my Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. He said this and passed away.	Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.	Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47	When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, Truly this was a righteous man.	Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”	The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
48	And all the people who were gathered together to see this sight, when they saw what had happened, returned, beating their breasts.	And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.	When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.
49	And all the acquaintances of Jesus stood afar off, and the women who had come with him from Galilee, and they were beholding these things.	And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.	But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
50	There was a man named Joseph the counsellor of Arimathaea, a city of Judaea, a good and righteous man.	Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,	Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,
51	He did not agree with their wishes and their actions; and he waited for the kingdom of God.	who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.	who had not consented to their decision and action. 55	The women who had come with him from Galilee were near, and they saw the tomb, and how his body was laid. 56	And they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the sabbath they rested, as it is commanded.	Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.	Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
