1 And having entered, He was passing through Jericho. He entered Jericho and was passing through. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
2 And behold, a man called by the name Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
3 And he was seeking to see Jesus, who He is. And he was not able on account of the crowd, because he was small in stature. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.
4 And having run ahead to the front, he went up on a sycamore-fig tree so that he might see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 And as He came upon the place, having looked up, Jesus said to him, “Zacchaeus, having hurried, come down, for it is necessary for Me to stay in your house today.” And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
6 And having hurried, he came down and received Him, rejoicing. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 And having seen it, they were all grumbling, saying, “He entered to lodge with a sinful man.” And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
8 But having stood, Zacchaeus said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I give to the poor; and if I defrauded anything of anyone, I repay it fourfold.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation came to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
11 Now in their hearing these things, having proceeded, He spoke a parable because of His being near Jerusalem and their thinking that the kingdom of God is about to appear immediately. As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
12 Therefore He said, “A certain man of noble birth went to a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.
13 And having called ten of his servants, he gave to them ten minas and said to them, ‘Do business until I come.’ Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We are not willing for this man to reign over us.’ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 And it came to pass on his returning, having received the kingdom, that he directed these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, so that he might know what each had gained by doing business. When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 And the first came up, saying, ‘Lord, your mina produced ten minas.’ The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you were faithful in very little, be having authority over ten cities.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ “’Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
18 And the second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, made five minas.’ And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 And he said also to this one, ‘And you, be over five cities.’ And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 And the other came, saying, ‘Master, behold your mina, which I had lying away in a soudario. Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.
21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.’ for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’
22 He says to him, ‘Out of your mouth I will judge you, evil servant. You knew that I am a harsh man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
23 And why did you not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, might have collected it with interest?’ Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 And to those standing by he said, ‘Take from him the mina and give it to the one having the ten minas.’ And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ “’Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 I say to you⁺ that to everyone having, it will be given; but from the one not having, even that which he has will be taken away. ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.
27 However, these enemies of mine, those not having been willing for me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’” But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’” But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
28 And having said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 And it came to pass as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, toward the mount called Olivet, that He sent two of the disciples, When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,
30 saying, “Go into the village ahead, in which, entering, you⁺ will find a colt tied, on which no one of men ever sat; and having loosed it, bring it. saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
31 And if anyone may ask you⁺, ‘Why are you⁺ loosing it?’ thus you⁺ will say, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’” If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 And having gone away, those sent found it just as He said to them. So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.
33 And on their loosing the colt, its masters said to them, “Why are you⁺ loosing the colt?” And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 And they led it to Jesus, and having cast their garments on the colt, they put Jesus on it. And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
36 And in His going, they were spreading their garments in the road. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 And in His drawing near, already at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples, rejoicing, began to praise God in a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 saying: “Blessed is the coming King in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 And answering, He said, “I say to you⁺ that if these will be silent, the stones will cry out.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
41 And as He drew near, having seen the city, He wept over it, And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
42 saying, “If you knew in this day, even you, the things for peace! But now they were hidden from your eyes. saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
43 For the days will come upon you, and your enemies will cast around you a barricade, and they will surround you and will hem you in on every side. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.
44 And they will level you to the ground, and your children in you, and they will not leave a stone upon a stone in you, because you did not know the season of your visitation.” and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
45 And having entered into the temple, He began to cast out those selling, And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.
46 saying to them, “It has been written: ‘And My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you⁺ made it ‘a den of robbers.’” saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” “It is written,” he said to them, “’My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
47 And He was teaching every day in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the foremost of the people were seeking to destroy Him. And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.
48 And they were not finding what they might do; for all the people were hanging on Him, hearing. but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
