2	and they spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us by what authority You do these things, or who is the one having given You this authority?”	and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”	“Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”
3	And answering, He said to them, “I also will ask you⁺ a word, and you⁺ tell Me:	He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me,	He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me:
4	The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”	was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?”	John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5	And they reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you⁺ not believe him?’	And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’	They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’
6	But if we should say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John is a prophet.”	But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”	But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
7	And they answered that they did not know from where.	So they answered that they did not know where it came from.	So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8	And Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you⁺ by what authority I do these things.”	And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”	Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
9	And He began to speak to the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, and he rented it out to farmers and traveled abroad a long time. 14	But having seen him, the farmers were reasoning with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him, so that the inheritance might become ours.’	But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’	“But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
15	And having cast him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What, therefore, will the lord of the vineyard do to them?	And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?	So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. “What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
16	He will come and will destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” And having heard, they said, “Never may it be!”	He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!”	He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17	But having looked at them, He said, “What then is this that has been written: ‘The stone that those building rejected, this became the head of the corner’?	But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?	Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: “’The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
18	Everyone having fallen on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it might fall, it will grind him into powder.”	Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”	Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”
19	And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on Him in that hour, and they feared the people. For they knew that He spoke this parable against them.	The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.	The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.
20	And having closely watched, they sent spies feigning themselves to be righteous, so that they might catch Him in His word, so as to deliver Him to the rule and to the authority of the governor.	So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.	Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.
21	And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach rightly and do not receive any person, but teach the way of God on the basis of truth.	So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God.	So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
22	Is it lawful for us to give tax to Caesar or not?”	Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”	Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23	But having perceived their craftiness, He said to them,	But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,	He saw through their duplicity and said to them,

26	And they were not able to catch Him in His saying before the people. And having marveled at His answer, they were silent.	And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.	They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
27	And some of the Sadducees, the ones denying there is a resurrection, having come, questioned Him,	There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,	Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.
28	saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if anyone’s brother should die having a wife, and he should be childless, that his brother should take the wife and should raise up seed for his brother.	and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.	“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
29	Therefore there were seven brothers. And the first, having taken a wife, died childless;	Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children.	Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.

34	And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.	And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,	Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
35	But those having been considered worthy to obtain that which is to the age and the resurrection that is out from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage.	but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,	But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,
36	For neither are they able to die anymore, for they are like angels, and they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.	for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.	and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.
37	But that the dead are raised even Moses showed at the bush, as he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’	But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.	But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

41	And He said to them, “How do they say the Christ is Son of David?	But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son?	Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?
42	For David himself says in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand	For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,	David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “’The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
43	until I place Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”’	until I make your enemies your footstool.”’	until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.\|’
44	David therefore calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”	David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”	David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

46	“Beware of the scribes, who are wanting to walk in long robes, and loving greetings in the marketplaces and first seats in the synagogues and first places at the suppers,	“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,	“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
47	who devour the houses of widows and pray at great length as a pretext. These will receive more abundant judgment.”	who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”	They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
