1 Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray all the time and never give up. And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
2 He said, |In a city there was a judge who didn't fear God or respect people. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought.
3 In that city there was also a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 For a while the judge refused. But later, he told himself, 'I don't fear God or respect people, For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think,
5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice. Otherwise, she will keep coming and wear me out.'| yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
6 Then the Lord added, |Listen to what the unrighteous judge says. And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says.
7 Won't God grant his chosen people justice when they cry out to him day and night? Is he slow to help them? And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?
8 I tell you, he will give them justice quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?| I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
9 Jesus also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves, thinking they were righteous, but who looked down on everyone else: He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:

13 |But the tax collector stood at a distance and would not even look up to heaven. Instead, he continued to beat his chest and said, 'O God, be merciful to me, the sinner that I am!' 14 I tell you, this man, rather than the other one, went down to his home justified, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted.| I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
15 Now some people were even bringing their infants to Jesus to have him touch them. But when the disciples saw this, they sternly told the people not to do that. Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.
16 Jesus, however, called for the children and said, |Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom of God belongs to people like these. But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 18 Then an official asked Jesus, |Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?| And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 |Why do you call me good?| Jesus asked him. |Nobody is good except for one—God. And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.
20 You know the commandments: 'Never commit adultery. Never murder. Never steal. Never give false testimony. Honor your father and mother.'| You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”
21 The official replied, |I have kept all of these since I was a young man.| And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
22 When Jesus heard this, he told him, |You still need to do one thing. Sell everything you have and give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me.| When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23 But when the official heard this he became sad, because he was very rich. But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.
24 So when Jesus saw how sad he was, he said, |How hard it is for rich people to get into the kingdom of God! Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it's easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God.| For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 Those who were listening to Jesus asked, |Then who can be saved?| Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus replied, |The things that are impossible for people are possible for God.| But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
28 Then Peter said, |See, we have left everything we have and followed you.| And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”
29 Jesus told them, |I tell all of you with certainty, there is no one who has left his home, wife, brothers, parents, or children because of the kingdom of God And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
30 who will not receive many times as much in this world, as well as eternal life in the age to come.| who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.” will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, |Pay attention! We're going up to Jerusalem. 43 Immediately the man could see again and began to follow Jesus, glorifying God. All the people saw this and gave praise to God. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
