1	In the meantime, after so many thousands of the people had gathered that they were stepping on one another, Jesus began speaking first of all to His disciples, “Be continually on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees [that is, their pervasive, corrupting influence and teaching], which is hypocrisy [producing self-righteousness].	In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.	Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2	But there is nothing [so carefully] concealed that it will not be revealed, nor so hidden that it will not be made known.	Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.	There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
3	For that reason, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.	Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.	What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4	“I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have nothing more that they can do.	“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.	“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
5	But I will point out to you whom you should fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority and power to hurl [you] into hell; yes, I say to you, [stand in great awe of God and] fear Him!	But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!	But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
6	Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? Yet not one of them has [ever] been forgotten in the presence of God.	Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.	Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
7	Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are far more valuable than many sparrows.	Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.	Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
8	“I say to you, whoever declares openly and confesses Me before men [speaking freely of Me as his Lord], the Son of Man also will declare openly and confess him [as one of His own] before the angels of God.	“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God,	“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.
9	But he who denies Me before men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.	but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.	But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.
10	And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit [that is, whoever intentionally discredits the Holy Spirit by attributing the authenticating miracles done by Me to Satan], it will not be forgiven him [for him there is no forgiveness].	And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.	And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
11	When they bring you before the synagogues and the magistrates and the authorities, do not be worried about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say;	And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say,	“When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
12	for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”	for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”	for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
13	Someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.”	Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”	Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14	But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or an arbitrator over [the two of] you?”	But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?”	Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
15	Then He said to them, “Watch out and guard yourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of nor is it derived from his possessions.”	And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”	Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16	Then He told them a parable, saying, “There was a rich man whose land was very fertile and productive.	And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully,	And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.
17	And he began thinking to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place [large enough in which] to store my crops?’	and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’	He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18	Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my storehouses and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there.	And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.	“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.
19	And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many good things stored up, [enough] for many years; rest and relax, eat, drink and be merry (celebrate continually).”’	And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’	And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.\|’
20	But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own all the things you have prepared?’	But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’	“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21	So it is for the one who continues to store up and hoard possessions for himself, and is not rich [in his relationship] toward God.”	So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”	“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
22	Jesus said to His disciples, “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; or about your body, as to what you will wear.	And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on.	Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
23	For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.	For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.	For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
24	Consider the ravens, for they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the crop]; they have no storehouse or barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds!	Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!	Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
25	And which of you by worrying can add one hour to his life’s span?	And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?	Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?
26	So if you are not even able to do a very little thing [such as that], why are you worried about the rest?	If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?	Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27	Consider the lilies and wildflowers, how they grow [in the open field]. They neither labor nor spin [wool to make clothing]; yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these.	Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.	“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
28	But if this is how God clothes the grass which is in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You of little faith!	But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!	If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!
29	So as for you, do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink; nor have an anxious and unsettled mind.	And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried.	And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
30	For all the [pagan] nations of the world greedily seek these things; and your [heavenly] Father [already] knows that you need them.	For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.	For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
31	But [strive for and actively] seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.	Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.	But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
32	Do not be afraid and anxious, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.	“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.	“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
33	“Sell your possessions (show compassion) and give [donations] to the poor. Provide money belts for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing and inexhaustible treasure in the heavens, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.	Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.	Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
34	For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.	For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.	For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35	“Be dressed and ready for active service, and keep your lamps continuously burning.	“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning,	“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
36	Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks they may immediately open the door for him.	and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.	like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
37	Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) are those servants whom the master finds awake and watching when he arrives. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, he will prepare himself to serve, and will have them recline at the table, and will come and wait on them.	Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.	It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
38	Whether he comes in the second watch (before midnight), or even in the third (after midnight), and finds them so [prepared and ready], blessed are those servants.	If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants!	It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
39	“But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time the thief was coming, he [would have been awake and alert, and] would not have allowed his house to be broken into.	But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.	But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
40	You too, be continually ready; because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”	You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”	You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41	Peter said, “Lord, are You addressing this parable to us [disciples], or to everyone else as well?”	Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?”	Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42	The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward [of the estate], whom his master will put in charge over his household, to give his servants their portion of food at the proper time?	And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?	The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
43	Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) is that servant whom his master finds so doing when he arrives.	Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.	It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
44	I assure you and most solemnly say to you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.	Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.	Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
45	But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is taking his time in coming,’ and begins to beat the servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,	But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,	But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.
46	the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.	the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful.	The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47	And that servant who knew his master’s will, and yet did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will be beaten with many lashes [of the whip],	And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating.	“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.
48	but the one who did not know it and did things worthy of a beating, will receive only a few [lashes]. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.	But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.	But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
49	“I have come to cast fire (judgment) on the earth; and how I wish that it were already kindled!	“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled!	“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50	I have a baptism [of great suffering] with which to be baptized, and how [greatly] I am distressed until it is accomplished!	I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished!	But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!
51	Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division [between believers and unbelievers];	Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.	Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
52	for from now on five in one household will be divided [over Me], three against two and two against three.	For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three.	From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
53	They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”	They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”	They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54	He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain,’ and that is how it turns out.	He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens.	He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.
55	And when [you see that] a south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It will be a hot day,’ and it happens.	And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens.	And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is.
56	You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! You know how to analyze and intelligently interpret the appearance of the earth and sky [to forecast the weather], but why do you not intelligently interpret this present time?	You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?	Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
57	“And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right?	“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?	“Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
58	For while you are going with your opponent [at law] to appear before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle, so that he does not drag you before the judge, and the judge does not [rule against you and] turn you over to the officer, and the officer does not throw you into prison.	As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison.	As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59	I say to you, you [absolutely] will not get out of there until you have paid the very last cent.”	I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”	I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
