1 And, passing along, he saw a man blind from his birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 We must work the works of Him Who sent Me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 Having thus spoken, He spit on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay, Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
7 and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is interpreted, Sent). He went, therefore, and washed, and came seeing. and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8 The neighbors, therefore, and those formerly beholding him, that he was a beggar, said, "Is not this he that sits and begs?" The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Some said, "This is he;" others said , "No, but he is like him;" he said, "I am he ." Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 They said, therefore, to him, "How then were your eyes opened?" So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He answered, "The Man Who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam, and wash;' having gone, therefore, and washed, I received sight." He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
12 And they said to him, "Where is He?" He says, I know not." They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
13 They bring to the Pharisees him who was once blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 And it was a sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and anointed his eyes. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
15 Again, therefore, the Pharisees also asked him, how he received sight. And he said to them, "He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and see." So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees, therefore, said, "This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
17 They say, therefore, to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, seeing that He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a Prophet." So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18 The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him, that he was blind, and received sight, until they called the parents of him who received sight, The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
19 and asked them, "Is this your son, who ye say, was born blind? How, then, does he now see?" and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 His parents, therefore, answered and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
21 but how he now sees, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age; he will speak for himself." But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
22 These things said his parents, because they were fearing the Jews; for the Jews had agreed already, that, if any one should confess Him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
23 On this account, his parents said, "He is of age; ask him." Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 Therefore, they called a second time the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God: we know that this Man is a sinner." So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
25 He, therefore, answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, though I was blind, now I see." He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 They said, therefore, to him, "What did He do to you? how did He open your eyes?" They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered them, "I told you already, and ye did not hear; why do ye wish to hear it again? Do ye also wish to become His disciples?" He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 And they reviled him, and said, "You are His disciple; but we are disciples of Moses. And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
29 We know that God hath spoken to Moses; but, as to this Man, we know not whence He is." We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
30 The man answered and said to them, "Why, in this is the wonder, that ye do not know whence He is, and He opened my eyes. The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
31 We know that God heareth not sinners; but, if any one is a worshiper of God, and does His will, him He heareth. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.
32 From remotest antiquity, it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind! Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
33 If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing." If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
34 They answered and said to him, You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us!" And they cast him out. They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
35 Jesus heard that they cast him out; and, finding him, He said, "Do you believe on the Son of God?" Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 And He answered, and said, "And Who is He, Lord, that I may believe on Him?" He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and it is He Who is talking with you." Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him. He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39 And Jesus said, "For judgment came I into the world; that those who see not may see, and that those who see may become blind." Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and said to Him, "Are we also blind?" Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41 Jesus said to them, "If ye were blind, ye would have no sin; but now ye say, 'We see,' your sin abides." Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
