5	Then went forth Jesus without, bearing a crown of thorns, and a purple garment. And he says to them, Behold the man!	So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”	When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6	When therefore the chief priests and attendants saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify, crucify. Pilate says to them, Take ye him, and crucify; for I find no fault in him.	When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”	As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
7	The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, for he made himself the Son of God.	The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”	The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
8	When Pilate heard this word, he was more afraid:	When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.	When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
9	And went into the pretorium again, and says to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.	He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.	and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10	Then says Pilate to him, Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to loose thee.	So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”	“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11	Jesus answered, Thou hast no power against me, if it were not given thee from above: therefore he delivering me to thee has greater sin.	Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”	Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12	From this Pilate sought to loose him: and the Jews cried out, saying, If thou loose this, thou art not Caesar's friend: every one making himself a king speaks against Caesar.	From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”	From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13	Then Pilate having heard, brought Jesus without, and sat upon the judgment seat, in a place called Paved with ornamental stones; in Hebraic, Gabbatha.	So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.	When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
14	And it was the preparation of the pascha, and about the sixth hour: and he says to the Jews, Behold your King!	Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”	It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
15	And they cried, Take away, take away, crucify him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.	They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”	But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16	Then, therefore, delivered he him to them, that he might be crucified.	So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,	Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
17	And they took Jesus, and led away: and bearing his cross he went out into a place called Kranium, which in Hebraic is called Golgotha:	and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.	Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
18	Where they crucified him, and with him two others, hence and thence, and Jesus in the midst.	There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.	There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19	And Pilate also wrote a title, and put upon the cross. And it was written, JESUS THE NAZARITE, KING OF THE JEWS.	Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. 20	Then read many of the Jews this title: for the place was near the city where Jesus was crucified: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, Roman.	Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21	Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.	So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’”	The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
22	Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.	Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”	Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23	Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part: and also the coat: and the coat was unsewn through the whole, having been woven from above.	When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,	When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24	Then said they to one another, Let us not divide it, but let us draw lots for it, whose it shall be: that the writing might be completed, saying, They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my clothing cast they the lot. Then truly did the soldiers these things.	so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,	“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
25	And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.	but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.	Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26	Jesus then having seen the mother, and the disciple standing near, whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27	Then says he to the disciple, Behold thy mother And from that hour the disciple took her to his own. 28	After this, Jesus knowing that all things were already completed, that the writing might be finished, says, I thirst.	After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”	Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29	Then was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, put upon hyssop, and brought near to his mouth.	A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.	A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30	When Jesus therefore took the vinegar, he said, It has been finished: and having bent the head, he delivered up the spirit.	When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31	Then the Jews, that the bodies remain not upon the cross in the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for great was the day of that sabbath,) asked Pilate that their legs be broken, and they be taken away.	Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.	Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32	Then came the soldiers, and truly brake the legs of the first, and of the other crucified with him.	So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.	The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
33	And upon having come to Jesus, when they saw him already dead, they brake not his legs:	But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.	But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34	But one of the soldiers with a javelin pricked his side, and quickly came out blood and water.	But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.	Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
35	And he having seen has testified, and his testimony is true: and he knows that he says true, that ye might believe.	He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.	The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
36	For these were that the writing be completed, A bone of him shall not be broken.	For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”	These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
37	And again another writing says, They shall look on whom they goaded.	And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”	and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
38	And after these, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, in secret, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might takeaway the body of Jesus: and Pilate conceded. He came then, and took the body of Jesus.	After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.	Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
39	And Nicodemus also came, he having come to Jesus at first by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about one hundred pounds.	Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.	He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40	Then took they the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen bandages with spices, as the custom is to the Jews to prepare a body for interment.	So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41	And in the place where he was crucified, was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was ever laid.	Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.	At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
42	There, therefore, on account of the Jews' preparation, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus.	So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.	Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
