Then Pilate order'd Jesus to be scourged. Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
and the soldiers having made a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, and threw a purple robe about him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
hail king of the Jews! said they, and struck him on the cheeks. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
Pilate therefore went out again, and said to them, observe, I bring him out to you, to acquaint you that I find no fault in him. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
so Jesus marched out wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, here's the man. So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
as soon as the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
the Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he pretended to be the son of God. The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
Pilate upon hearing that, was still more apprehensive. When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
and went again into the Pretorium, and said to Jesus, who was your father? but Jesus gave him no answer. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
then said Pilate to him, won't you give me an answer? don't you know that it is in my power to crucify you, or to release you? So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
Jesus answered, you could not have any power over me, except you deriv'd it from above: therefore they who delivered me into your hands are the most culpable. Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
upon this, Pilate propos'd to release him: but the Jews cried out, if you let this man go, you are not Cesar's friend: he that sets up for king, opposes Cesar. From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha. So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
it was then about the sixth hour of the day before the sabbath of the passover: and he said to the Jews, behold your king. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
but they cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king? the chief priests answered, we have no king but Cesar. They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
upon which he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took Jesus and led him away. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
and he bearing his cross, marched out to a place called the skull, which is in the Syriac, Golgotha: where they crucified him, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
and two others with him, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.
now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
thereupon the chief priests of the Jews went to Pilate, saying, don't write, "The king of the Jews;" but that he said, I am king of the Jews. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ. Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
The soldiers, after they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did. so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
In the mean time the mother of Jesus, and her sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene, were standing by the cross. but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
when Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, woman, behold thy son. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,”
then he said to the disciple, behold thy mother, and from that time the disciple took her to his own home. Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon a stick of hyssop, and held it to his mouth. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Now for fear the bodies should remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, for it was then the eve of the pascal-sabbath, a day of high solemnity, the Jews desired Pilate that their legs might be broke, and that they might be taken away. Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
accordingly the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
then they came to Jesus, and finding that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately blood and water issued out. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken." For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
and again the scripture saith elsewhere, "they shall look on him whom they pierced." And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
after this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a conceal'd one, pray'd Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave: so he went and took the body of Jesus. After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
Nicodemus, who formerly went to Jesus by night, came likewise and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
they took therefore the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, according to the manner of burial among the Jews. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
now near the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, in which no body had ever yet been laid. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
as this sepulchre was nigh at hand, they laid Jesus therein, because the time of the preparation of the Jews was expiring. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
