Then, therefore, Pilate took Jesus and scourged [Him], Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
and the soldiers having plaited a garland of thorns, placed [it] on His head, and they cast a purple garment around Him, And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
and said, “Hail! The King of the Jews”; and they were giving Him slaps. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
Pilate, therefore, again went forth outside and says to them, “Behold, I bring Him to you outside, that you may know that I find no fault in Him”; Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
Jesus, therefore, came forth outside, bearing the thorny garland and the purple garment; and he says to them, “Behold, the Man!” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate says to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify, for I find no fault in Him”; When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
the Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, for He made Himself Son of God.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was more afraid, When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
and entered again into the Praetorium and says to Jesus, “Where are You from?” And Jesus gave him no answer. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
Pilate, therefore, says to Him, “Do You not speak to me? Have You not known that I have authority to crucify You, and I have authority to release You?” So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
Jesus answered, “You would have no authority against Me if it were not having been given you from above; because of this, he who is delivering Me up to you has greater sin.” Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
From this [time] Pilate was seeking to release Him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, “If you may release this One, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone making himself a king speaks against Caesar.” From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus outside—and he sat down on the judgment seat—to a place called, “Pavement,” and in Hebrew, Gabbatha; So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
and it was the Preparation of the Passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he says to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
And they cried out, “Take away! Take away! Crucify Him!” Pilate says to them, “Will I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
Then, therefore, he delivered Him up to them, that He may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led [Him] away, So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
and carrying His cross, He went forth to the [place] called “Place of [the] Skull,” which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha— and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, on this side and on that side, but Jesus in the middle. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
And Pilate also wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross, and it was written: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS”; Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.
therefore many of the Jews read this title, because the place was near to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Latin. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Do not write, The King of the Jews, but that this One said, I am King of the Jews”; So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
The soldiers, therefore, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout; When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
they said, therefore, to one another, “We may not tear it, but cast a lot for it, whose it will be”; that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, “They divided My garments to themselves, and they cast a lot for My clothing”; the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things. so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
And there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene; but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jesus, therefore, having seen [His] mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He was loving, He says to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son”; When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,”
afterward He says to the disciple, “Behold, your mother”; and from that hour the disciple took her to his own [home]. Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
After this, Jesus knowing that all things have now been accomplished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, says, “I thirst”; After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put [it] around a hyssop stalk, they put [it] to His mouth; A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, He said, “It has been accomplished.” And having bowed the head, gave up the spirit. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, since it was the Preparation (for that Sabbath day was a great one), asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they [are] taken away. Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
The soldiers, therefore, came, and they indeed broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him, So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
and having come to Jesus, when they saw Him already having been dead, they did not break His legs; But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came forth blood and water; But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
and he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true, and that one has known that he speaks true things, that you also may believe. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, “A bone of Him will not be broken”; For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
and again another Writing says, “They will look to Him whom they pierced.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea—being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews—asked of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus, After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
and Nicodemus also came—who came to Jesus by night at the first—carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, one hundred pounds. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
Therefore they took the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial; So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
and there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and a new tomb in the garden, in which no one was yet laid; Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
therefore, because the tomb was near, there they laid Jesus because of the Preparation of the Jews. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
