Then Pilate took Jesus, and scourged Him. Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
And the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, placed it on His head, and put on Him a purple robe; And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
and came to Him and continued to say, Hail, King of the Jews! and they gave Him slaps. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
Again Pilate went out, and speaks to them, Behold, I lead Him out to you, in order that you may know that I find no fault. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
Then Jesus came out, bearing the thorny crown and purple robe. And he says to them, Behold, the man! So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
Then when the high priest and officers saw Him, they cried out, Crucify Him, crucify Him. Pilate says to them, You take Him, and crucify Him: for I find nothing criminal in Him. When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
And the Jews responded, We have a law, and according to law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God. The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
Then when Pilate heard this word, he feared the more; When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
then he went again into the judgment hall, and speaks to Jesus, Whence art thou? And Jesus gave him no answer. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
Pilate says to Him, Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and I have power to crucify you? So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
Jesus responded, Thou hast no power against me, unless it was given to thee from above: on this account the one having betrayed me to thee has the greater sin. Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
After this Pilate still sought to release Him: but the Jews continued to cry out, saying, If you release Him, you are not the friend of Caesar: every one making himself king speaks against Caesar. From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Then Pilate hearing these words, led out Jesus, and sat down on the tribunal, in the place called Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
And it was the preparation of the passover: and was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews, Behold, your King! Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
Then they cried out, Take Him away, take Him away, crucify Him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your King? And the chief priests responded, We have no king but Caesar. They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
Therefore he then delivered Him to them that He should be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
And He was bearing His cross. And He went out into a place called Calvary, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
They crucified Him there, and two others with Him, on this side and on that side, and Jesus in the midst. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
And Pilate also wrote His title, and placed it upon the cross. And it was written, JESUS THE NAZARENE THE KING OF THE JEWS. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.
Then many of the Jews read this title: because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city: And it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Roman. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not, King of the Jews; but that He said, I am the King of the Jews. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made them four parts, a part for each soldier; and the vesture. And the vesture was seamless, woven from the top throughout. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
Then they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but let us gamble for it, whose it shall be. In order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, saying, They divided my garments among themselves, and upon my vesture they cast the lot. Then indeed the soldiers did these things. so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.
And by the cross of Jesus stood His mother, and the sister of His mother, Mary the mother of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Then Jesus seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved, standing by, said to His mother; Woman, behold, thy son. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,”
Then He says to the disciple, Behold, thy mother. And from that hour that disciple received her into his own home. Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
After this, Jesus seeing that all things are already perfected, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
Then a vessel was sitting by full of vinegar: and filling a sponge with vinegar and placing it on the hyssop, they brought it to His mouth. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
Then when Jesus received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Then the Jews, in order that the bodies may not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, since it was the Preparation (for the day of that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate, that they might break their legs, and take them down. Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
Then the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first one, and of the other one being crucified along with Him. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
But having come to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs: But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
but one of the soldiers pierced His side through with the spear, and immediately blood and water came out. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
And He having seen hath testified, and his testimony is true: and he knows that he speaks the truth, that you also may believe. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
For these things took place, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of Him shall not be broken. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
Again another Scripture says, They shall look on Him, whom they have pierced. And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
After these things, Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but having been hidden on account of the fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted. Then he came and took the body of Jesus. After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
And Nicodemus also, the one having come at first to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
Then they received the body of Jesus, and wrapped it in linens with aromatics, as is the custom to the Jews to embalm. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
And there was in the place where He was crucified, a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, in which no one was ever yet placed. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
Then on account of the Preparation of the Jews (because the sepulcher was near), they placed Jesus there. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
