1 And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said. Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have obtained a male <i>child</i> with <i>the help of</i> the LORD.” Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.”
2 Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a cultivator of the ground. Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
3 So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
4 while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: Abel, on his part also brought <i>an offering,</i> from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering; And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. but for Cain and his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his face was gloomy. but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “ and why has your countenance fallen? The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why is your face gloomy? Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee <i>shall be</i> his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. If you do well, will <i>your face</i> not be cheerful? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. Cain talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” And the LORD said unto Cain, Where <i>is</i> Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: <i>Am</i> I my brother's keeper? Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. Then He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground. The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
11 Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. And now <i>art</i> thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth.” When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
13 But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment <i>is</i> greater than I can bear. Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is too great to endure! Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear.
14 Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, <i>that</i> every one that findeth me shall slay me. Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and I will be hidden from Your face, and I will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. So the LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him seven times <i>as much.</i>” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one finding him would kill him. But the LORD said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
16 So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. Then Cain left the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and <i>Cain</i> built a city, and named the city Enoch, after the name of his son. Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech. To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one <i>was</i> Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. Lamech took two wives for himself: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock. Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and <i>of such as have</i> cattle. Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and <i>have</i> livestock. Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
21 And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. And his brother's name <i>was</i> Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and flute. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.
22 And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain <i>was</i> Naamah. As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Pay attention to my words, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me! Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.” If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. “If Cain is avenged seven times, Then Lamech seventy-seven times!” If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25 And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, <i>said she</i>, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, <i>she said,</i> “God has appointed me another child in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.” Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. To Seth also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then <i>people</i> began to call upon the name of the LORD. Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.
