As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.1As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth.
“Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”2His disciples questioned Him: "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," Jesus answered. "This came about so that God's works might be displayed in him.
We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.4We must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.
But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.6After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes.
He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!7"Go," He told him, "wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.
His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”8His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him as a beggar said, "Isn't this the man who sat begging?"
Some said he was, and others said, “No, he just looks like him!” But the beggar kept saying, “Yes, I am the same one!”9Some said, "He's the one." "No," others were saying, "but he looks like him." He kept saying, "I'm the one!"
They asked, “Who healed you? What happened?”10Therefore they asked him, "Then how were your eyes opened?"
He told them, “The man they call Jesus made mud and spread it over my eyes and told me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash yourself.’ So I went and washed, and now I can see!”11He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, Go to Siloam and wash.' So when I went and washed I received my sight.""
“Where is he now?” they asked. “I don’t know,” he replied.12Where is He?" they asked." I don't know," he said.
Then they took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees,13They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.
because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and healed him.14The day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, “He put the mud over my eyes, and when I washed it away, I could see!”15So again the Pharisees asked him how he received his sight." He put mud on my eyes," he told them. "I washed and I can see."
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said, “But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.16Therefore some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for He doesn't keep the Sabbath!" But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.
Then the Pharisees again questioned the man who had been blind and demanded, “What’s your opinion about this man who healed you?” The man replied, “I think he must be a prophet.”17Again they asked the blind man, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?"" He's a prophet," he said.
The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents.18The Jews did not believe this about him--that he was blind and received sight--until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.
They asked them, “Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he now see?”19They asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see?""
His parents replied, “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,20We know this is our son and that he was born blind," his parents answered. "
but we don’t know how he can see or who healed him. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”21But we don't know how he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he's of age. He will speak for himself."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.22His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him as Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue.
That’s why they said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”23This is why his parents said, "He's of age; ask him."
So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, “God should get the glory for this, because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.”24So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner!"
“I don’t know whether he is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!”25He answered, "Whether or not He's a sinner, I don't know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!"
“But what did he do?” they asked. “How did he heal you?”26Then they asked him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?""
“Look!” the man exclaimed. “I told you once. Didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”27I already told you," he said, "and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become His disciples too, do you?"
Then they cursed him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!28They ridiculed him: "You're that man's disciple, but we're Moses' disciples.
We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”29We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man--we don't know where He's from!""
“Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from?30This is an amazing thing," the man told them. "You don't know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes!
We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.31We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him.
Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.32Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”33If this man were not from God, He wouldn't be able to do anything.""
“You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue. Spiritual Blindness34You were born entirely in sin," they replied, "and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man? ”35When Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, He found him and asked, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" "
The man answered, “Who is he, sir? I want to believe in him.”36Who is He, Sir, that I may believe in Him?" he asked.
“You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!”37Jesus answered, "You have seen Him; in fact, He is the One speaking with you.""
“Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus.38I believe, Lord!" he said, and he worshiped Him.
Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”39Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind."
Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, “Are you saying we’re blind?”40Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and asked Him, "We aren't blind too, are we?"
“If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.41"If you were blind," Jesus told them, "you wouldn't have sin. But now that you say, We see--your sin remains.
