| 1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. | 1Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; |
| 2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. | 2and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor. |
| 3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. | 3Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, |
| 4"I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility." | 4saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" |
| 5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. | 5And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. |
| 6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." | 6The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood." |
| 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. | 7And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. |

| 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, | 9Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; |

| 11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied. | 11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "It is as you say." |
| 12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. | 12And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. |
| 13Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?" | 13Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?" |
| 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor. | 14And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed. |
| 15Now it was the governor's custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. | 15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted. |

| 18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him. | 18For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over. |

| 21"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered. | 21But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas." |
| 22"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!" | 22Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Crucify Him!" |
| 23"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" | 23And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the more, saying, "Crucify Him!" |
| 24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!" | 24When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves." |
| 25All the people answered, "His blood is on us and on our children!" | 25And all the people said, "His blood shall be on us and on our children!" |
| 26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. | 26Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. |

| 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. | 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. | 41In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, |
| 42"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. | 42"He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. |
| 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" | 43"HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" |
| 44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. | 44The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words. |
| 45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. | 45Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. |
| 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"). | 46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" |
| 47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah." | 47And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah." |
| 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. | 48Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. |
| 49The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him." | 49But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him." |
| 50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. | 50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. |
| 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split | 51And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. |
| 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. | 52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; |
| 53They came out of the tombs after Jesus' resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. | 53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. |
| 54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!" | 54Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!" |
| 55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. | 55Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. |

| 63"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' | 63and said, "Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I am to rise again.' |
| 64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first." | 64"Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first." |
| 65"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." | 65Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how." |
| 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. | 66And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone. |
