Psalm 89
NET Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew International Version
A well-written song by Ethan the Ezrachite. I will sing continually about the LORD's faithful deeds; to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. 1A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.
For I say, "Loyal love is permanently established; in the skies you set up your faithfulness." 2I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
The LORD said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant: 3You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant,
I will give you an eternal dynasty and establish your throne throughout future generations.'" (Selah) 4I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.'"
O LORD, the heavens praise your amazing deeds, as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly. 5The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies can compare to the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings, 6For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?
a God who is honored in the great angelic assembly, and more awesome than all who surround him? 7In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him.
O LORD, sovereign God! Who is strong like you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you. 8Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule over the proud sea. When its waves surge, you calm them. 9You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.
You crushed the Proud One and killed it; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. 10You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
The heavens belong to you, as does the earth. You made the world and all it contains. 11The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it.
You created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. 12You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
Your arm is powerful, your hand strong, your right hand victorious. 13Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.
Equity and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loyal love and faithfulness characterize your rule. 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.
How blessed are the people who worship you! O LORD, they experience your favor. 15Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, LORD.
They rejoice in your name all day long, and are vindicated by your justice. 16They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness.
For you give them splendor and strength. By your favor we are victorious. 17For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn.
For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. 18Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Then you spoke through a vision to your faithful followers and said: "I have energized a warrior; I have raised up a young man from the people. 19Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: "I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have raised up a young man from among the people.
I have discovered David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. 20I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him.
My hand will support him, and my arm will strengthen him. 21My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.
No enemy will be able to exact tribute from him; a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him. 22The enemy will not get the better of him; the wicked will not oppress him.
I will crush his enemies before him; I will strike down those who hate him. 23I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries.
He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love, and by my name he will win victories. 24My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted.
I will place his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. 25I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers.
He will call out to me, 'You are my father, my God, and the protector who delivers me.' 26He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.'
I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, the most exalted of the earth's kings. 27And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
I will always extend my loyal love to him, and my covenant with him is secure. 28I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail.
I will give him an eternal dynasty, and make his throne as enduring as the skies above. 29I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.
If his sons reject my law and disobey my regulations, 30"If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes,
if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments, 31if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands,
I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, their sin by inflicting them with bruises. 32I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging;
But I will not remove my loyal love from him, nor be unfaithful to my promise. 33but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised. 34I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.
Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness, I will never deceive David. 35Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness-- and I will not lie to David--
His dynasty will last forever. His throne will endure before me, like the sun, 36that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun;
it will remain stable, like the moon, his throne will endure like the skies." (Selah) 37it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky."
But you have spurned and rejected him; you are angry with your chosen king. 38But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one.
You have repudiated your covenant with your servant; you have thrown his crown to the ground. 39You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust.
You have broken down all his walls; you have made his strongholds a heap of ruins. 40You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins.
All who pass by have robbed him; he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors. 41All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors.
You have allowed his adversaries to be victorious, and all his enemies to rejoice. 42You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.
You turn back his sword from the adversary, and have not sustained him in battle. 43Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle.
You have brought to an end his splendor, and have knocked his throne to the ground. 44You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground.
You have cut short his youth, and have covered him with shame. (Selah) 45You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame.
How long, O LORD, will this last? Will you remain hidden forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire? 46How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?
Take note of my brief lifespan! Why do you make all people so mortal? 47Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity!
No man can live on without experiencing death, or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. (Selah) 48Who can live and not see death, or who can escape the power of the grave?
Where are your earlier faithful deeds, O Lord, the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? 49Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
Take note, O Lord, of the way your servants are taunted, and of how I must bear so many insults from people! 50Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
Your enemies, O LORD, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. 51the taunts with which your enemies, LORD, have mocked, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.
The LORD deserves praise forevermore! We agree! We agree! 52Praise be to the LORD forever! Amen and Amen.
