When morning came, all the high priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put him to death. 1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.
They bound him with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the governor.2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, who had betrayed him, regretted what had happened when he saw that Jesus was condemned. He brought the 30 pieces of silver back to the high priests and elders, 3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.
saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they replied, "What do we care? Attend to that yourself." 4"I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."
Then he flung the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, went outside, ran away, and hanged himself.5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
The high priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put this into the Temple treasury, because it is blood money." 6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money."
So they decided to use the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial ground for foreigners. 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.
That is why that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then what had been declared through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled when he said, "They took the 30 pieces of silver, the value of the man on whom a price had been set by the Israelis,9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel,
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." 10and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."
Meanwhile, Jesus was made to stand in front of the governor. The governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so."11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied.
While Jesus was being accused by the high priests and elders, he made no reply. 12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.
Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear how many charges they're bringing against you?" 13Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"
But Jesus did not reply at all, so that the governor was very surprised.14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor.
At every festival the governor had a custom of releasing to the crowd any prisoner whom they wanted. 15Now it was the governor's custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.16At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas.
So when the people had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which man do you want me to release for you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called 'the Messiah'?"17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?"
He did this because he knew that they had handed him over out of jealousy.18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
While he was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him a message that said, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, because today I have suffered terribly due to a dream I had about him."19While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."
But the high priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to demand that Jesus be put to death. 20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
So the governor asked them, "Which of the two men do you want me to release for you?" "Barabbas!" they replied.21"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
Pilate asked them, "Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"22"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
He asked, "What has he done wrong?" But they kept shouting louder and louder, "Let him be crucified!"23"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was about to break out instead. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Attend to that yourselves."24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"
All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and our children!" 25All the people answered, "His blood is on us and on our children!"
Then he released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the imperial headquarters and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
Twisting some thorns into a victor's crown, they placed it on his head and put a stick in his right hand. They knelt down in front of him and began making fun of him, saying, "Long live the king of the Jews!" 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said.
Then they spit on him and took the stick and hit him repeatedly on his head. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
As they were leaving, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry Jesus' cross. 32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.
When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means "Skull Place"), 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means "the place of the skull").
they offered him a drink of wine mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it. 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
After they had crucified him, they determined who would get his clothes by throwing dice for them.35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Then they sat down there and continued guarding him. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.
Above his head they placed the charge against him. It read, "This is Jesus, the king of the Jews."37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
At that time two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. 38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads
and saying, "You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—save yourself! If you're the Son of God, come down from the cross!"40and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"
In the same way the high priests, along with the scribes and elders, were also making fun of him. They kept saying, 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.
"He saved others but can't save himself! He is the king of Israel. Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 42"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
He trusts in God. Let God rescue him, if he wants to do so now. After all, he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
In a similar way, the bandits who were being crucified with him kept insulting him.44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
About three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, eli, lema sabachthani?", which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?").
When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah."47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah."
So one of the men ran off at once, took a sponge, and soaked it in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink.48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
But the others kept saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah will come and save him." 49The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."
Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice again and died.50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, rocks were split open, 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split
tombs were opened, and many saints who had died were brought back to life. 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
After his resurrection, they came out of their tombs, went into the Holy City, and appeared to many people.53They came out of the tombs after Jesus' resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
When the centurion and those guarding Jesus with him saw the earthquake and the other things that were taking place, they were terrified and said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"
Now many women were also there, watching from a distance. They had accompanied Jesus from Galilee and had ministered to him. 55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
Later that evening, a rich man arrived from Arimathea. His name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. 57As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be done. 58Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
Then he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. After rolling a large stone across the door of the tomb, he left, 60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.
but Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained there, sitting in front of the tomb.61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The following day (that is, after the Day of Preparation), the high priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate 62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.
and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said while he was still alive, 'I will be raised after three days.' 63"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.'
Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, or his disciples may go and steal him and then tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception would be worse than the first one."64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."
Pilate told them, "You have a military guard. Go and make the tomb as secure as you know how." 65"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how."
So they went and secured the tomb by putting a seal on the stone in the presence of the guards.66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
