Israel’s Stubbornness

1  שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear) זֹ֣את (this), בֵּֽית־ (O house) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (of Jacob),

הַנִּקְרָאִים֙ (those being called) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (by the name) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel),

וּמִמֵּ֥י (and from the wellsprings) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah), יָצָ֑אוּ (have come forth)

הַֽנִּשְׁבָּעִ֣ים׀ (those swearing) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (by the name) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH),

וּבֵאלֹהֵ֤י (and the God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), יַזְכִּ֔ירוּ (call to mind)

לֹ֥א (not) בֶאֱמֶ֖ת (in truth), וְלֹ֥א (and not) בִצְדָקָֽה׃ (in righteousness).

2  כִּֽי־ (Indeed) מֵעִ֤יר (from the city), הַקֹּ֙דֶשׁ֙ (of holiness) נִקְרָ֔אוּ (they have been called)

וְעַל־ (and upon) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel); נִסְמָ֑כוּ (they have leaned)

יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס (is His name).

3  הָרִֽאשֹׁנוֹת֙ (The former things) מֵאָ֣ז (of old); הִגַּ֔דְתִּי (I have declared)

וּמִפִּ֥י (and from My mouth), יָצְא֖וּ (they went forth)

וְאַשְׁמִיעֵ֑ם (and I caused them to be heard)

פִּתְאֹ֥ם (suddenly), עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I acted) וַתָּבֹֽאנָה׃ (and they came to pass).

4  מִדַּעְתִּ֕י (From my knowing) כִּ֥י (that) קָשֶׁ֖ה (obstinate), אָ֑תָּה (you are)

וְגִ֤יד (sinew), בַּרְזֶל֙ (is an iron) עָרְפֶּ֔ךָ (and your neck)

וּמִצְחֲךָ֖ (and your forehead) נְחוּשָֽׁה׃ (bronze);

5  וָאַגִּ֤יד (and I declared) לְךָ֙ (to you) מֵאָ֔ז (from then)

בְּטֶ֥רֶם (before) תָּב֖וֹא (it came to pass)

הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֑יךָ (I informed you) פֶּן־ (lest) תֹּאמַר֙ (you should say),

עָצְבִּ֣י (My idol) עָשָׂ֔ם (has done them)

וּפִסְלִ֥י (and my carved image), וְנִסְכִּ֖י (and my molten image), צִוָּֽם׃ (has commanded them).

6  שָׁמַ֤עְתָּֽ (You have heard), חֲזֵה֙ (see) כֻּלָּ֔הּ (all of it)

וְאַתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺) הֲל֣וֹא (will not) תַגִּ֑ידוּ (declare it)

הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֤יךָ (I make you to hear) חֲדָשׁוֹת֙ (new things) מֵעַ֔תָּה (from now),

וּנְצֻר֖וֹת (and hidden things), וְלֹ֥א (that not) יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ (you did know).

7  עַתָּ֤ה (Now), נִבְרְאוּ֙ (they have been created) וְלֹ֣א (and not) מֵאָ֔ז (from then);

וְלִפְנֵי־ (and before) י֖וֹם (this day) וְלֹ֣א (and not); שְׁמַעְתָּ֑ם (did you hear of them)

פֶּן־ (lest) תֹּאמַ֖ר (you should say),

הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), יְדַעְתִּֽין׃ (I knew them).

8  גַּ֣ם (Indeed), לֹֽא־ (not); שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ (You have heard) גַּ֚ם (indeed), לֹ֣א (not); יָדַ֔עְתָּ (you have known)

גַּ֕ם (even), מֵאָ֖ז (from long ago) לֹא־ (not) פִתְּחָ֣ה (was opened), אָזְנֶ֑ךָ (your ear)

כִּ֤י (for) יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ (I knew that) בָּג֣וֹד (being treacherous) תִּבְגּ֔וֹד (you would act treacherously),

וּפֹשֵׁ֥עַ (and ‘one rebelling) מִבֶּ֖טֶן (from the womb’) קֹ֥רָא (is it called out) לָֽךְ׃ (for you).

9  לְמַ֤עַן (For the sake) שְׁמִי֙ (of My name) אַאֲרִ֣יךְ (I will lengthen) אַפִּ֔י (My nose),

וּתְהִלָּתִ֖י (and for My praise) אֶחֱטָם־ (I will hold it back) לָ֑ךְ (from you)

לְבִלְתִּ֖י (so as to not) הַכְרִיתֶֽךָ׃ (cut you off).

10  הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), צְרַפְתִּ֖יךָ (I have refined you) וְלֹ֣א (and not) בְכָ֑סֶף (as silver);

בְּחַרְתִּ֖יךָ (I have tested you) בְּכ֥וּר (in the furnace) עֹֽנִי׃ (of affliction).

11  לְמַעֲנִ֧י (For My own sake) לְמַעֲנִ֛י (My very own sake), אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה (I will act)

כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֣יךְ (how) יֵחָ֑ל (can I let Myself be profaned)?

וּכְבוֹדִ֖י (And My glory) לְאַחֵ֥ר (to another). לֹֽא־ (Not) אֶתֵּֽן׃ס (I will give).

Deliverance Promised to Israel

12  שְׁמַ֤ע (Listen) אֵלַי֙ (to Me) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (O Jacob)

וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and Israel), מְקֹרָאִ֑י (My called one);

אֲנִי־ (I am) הוּא֙ (He); אֲנִ֣י (I am) רִאשׁ֔וֹן (the First),

אַ֖ף (also) אֲנִ֥י (I am) אַחֲרֽוֹן׃ (the Last).

13  אַף־ (Surely) יָדִי֙ (My own hand) יָ֣סְדָה (founded) אֶ֔רֶץ (the earth),

וִֽימִינִ֖י (and My right hand) טִפְּחָ֣ה (spread out) שָׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens);

קֹרֵ֥א (call) אֲנִ֛י (I) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (to them)

יַעַמְד֥וּ (they stand up) יַחְדָּֽו׃ (together).

14  הִקָּבְצ֤וּ (Assemble), כֻלְּכֶם֙ (all of you⁺) וּֽשֲׁמָ֔עוּ (and hear);

מִ֥י (who) בָהֶ֖ם (among them) הִגִּ֣יד (has declared) אֶת־ (-) אֵ֑לֶּה (these things)

יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֲהֵב֔וֹ (has loved him) יַעֲשֶׂ֤ה (He will accomplish) חֶפְצוֹ֙ (His desire) בְּבָבֶ֔ל (with Babylon),

וּזְרֹע֖וֹ (and His arm) כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ (against the Chaldeans).

15  אֲנִ֥י (I) אֲנִ֛י (I), דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (have spoken);

אַף־ (yes), קְרָאתִ֑יו (I have called him)

הֲבִיאֹתִ֖יו (I have brought him)

וְהִצְלִ֥יחַ (and he has made prosperous) דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃ (his way).

16  קִרְב֧וּ (Come near) אֵלַ֣י (to Me) שִׁמְעוּ־ (hear) זֹ֗את (this);

לֹ֤א (not) מֵרֹאשׁ֙ (from the beginning); בַּסֵּ֣תֶר (in secret) דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי (have I spoken)

מֵעֵ֥ת (from the time) הֱיוֹתָ֖הּ (of its coming to be), שָׁ֣ם (there) אָ֑נִי (I am);

וְעַתָּ֗ה (and now) אֲדֹנָ֧י (the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH), שְׁלָחַ֖נִי (has sent me)

וְרוּחֽוֹ׃פ (and His Spirit),

17  כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֧ר (says) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH), גֹּאַלְךָ֖ (your Redeemer),

קְד֣וֹשׁ (the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel);

אֲנִ֨י (I am) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God)

מְלַמֶּדְךָ֣ (the One teaching you) לְהוֹעִ֔יל (to profit),

מַדְרִֽיכֲךָ֖ (the One leading you) בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (by the way) תֵּלֵֽךְ׃ (you should go).

18  ל֥וּא (If only) הִקְשַׁ֖בְתָּ (you had paid attention) לְמִצְוֺתָ֑י (to My commandments)!

וַיְהִ֤י (Then would have been) כַנָּהָר֙ (like a river), שְׁלוֹמֶ֔ךָ (your peace)

וְצִדְקָתְךָ֖ (and your righteousness) כְּגַלֵּ֥י (like the waves) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea).

19  וַיְהִ֤י (And would have been) כַחוֹל֙ (like the sand), זַרְעֶ֔ךָ (your seed)

וְצֶאֱצָאֵ֥י (and the offspring) מֵעֶ֖יךָ (of your bowels) כִּמְעֹתָ֑יו (like its grains)

לֹֽא־ (not) יִכָּרֵ֧ת (would have been cut off) וְֽלֹא־ (and not) יִשָּׁמֵ֛ד (destroyed)

שְׁמ֖וֹ (His name) מִלְּפָנָֽי׃ (from before Me).

20  צְא֣וּ (Go forth) מִבָּבֶל֮ (from Babylon)

בִּרְח֣וּ (Flee) מִכַּשְׂדִּים֒ (from the Chaldeans)

בְּק֣וֹל (with a voice) רִנָּ֗ה (ringing out) הַגִּ֤ידוּ (declare it)

הַשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ (let be heard) זֹ֔את (this),

הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ (let it go forth) עַד־ (to) קְצֵ֣ה (the end) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth);

אִמְר֕וּ (Say) גָּאַ֥ל (Has redeemed) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עַבְדּ֥וֹ (His servant) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob).

21  וְלֹ֣א (And not) צָמְא֗וּ (they did thirst) בָּחֳרָבוֹת֙ (in the deserts). הֽוֹלִיכָ֔ם (When He led them)

מַ֥יִם (the waters) מִצּ֖וּר (from the rock) הִזִּ֣יל (He made flow) לָ֑מוֹ (for them)

וַיִּ֨בְקַע־ (and He split) צ֔וּר (the rock) וַיָּזֻ֖בוּ (and gushed out) מָֽיִם׃ (the waters).

22  אֵ֣ין (There is no) שָׁל֔וֹם (peace), אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH),

לָרְשָׁעִֽים׃ס (For the wicked).
