The Cords of the Wicked

A song of ascents.

Psalm 129 belongs to Psalms 120–134, sung by Israelites traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. Their journey upward reflected Jerusalem’s elevated location and the worshiper’s approach to the Lord’s dwelling place.

Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,…
Psa 121:1 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills.…
Psa 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go…

Many a time they have persecuted me from my youth—

Israel speaks as one people, recalling affliction from its earliest days. From slavery in Egypt through oppression in the land, invasions, and exile, the nation repeatedly endured hostility from those opposed to the Lord and His covenant people.

Psa 119:157 Though my persecutors and foes are many,…
Psa 88:15 From my youth I was afflicted and near death.…
Psa 56:1 Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me;…

let Israel now declare—

The whole nation is summoned to confess the shared record of suffering and deliverance. Remembering God’s preservation strengthened Israel’s identity and testified that its survival rested not on human strength but on the faithfulness of the Lord.

Psa 124:1 A song of ascents. Of David. If the LORD had not been…
Psa 118:2 Let Israel say, “His loving devotion endures forever.”
Psa 107:2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed…

many a time they have persecuted me from my youth,

Israel remembers affliction from its earliest days, beginning with slavery in Egypt and continuing through repeated attacks by surrounding nations. The nation’s history was marked by hardship, hostility, and attempts to crush its identity and faith.

Exo 1:13-14 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly…
Jdg 2:14-16 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Lam 3:52 Without cause my enemies hunted me like a bird.

but they have not prevailed against me.

Israel endured because God preserved His covenant people. Though enemies brought suffering, they could not erase the nation or overthrow God’s purposes for it.

Jer 1:19 They will fight against you but will never overcome you…
Mat 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock…
Isa 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper,…

The plowmen plowed over my back;

Israel’s enemies inflicted repeated and brutal oppression, leaving the nation scarred by slavery, invasion, captivity, and persecution. The image portrays suffering as deliberate and merciless, like a field cut open by a plow. It also foreshadows the rejection and suffering endured by Christ at the hands of sinful men.

Isa 50:6 I offered My back to those who struck Me…
Mat 27:26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus…
Jhn 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.

they made their furrows long.

The wounds of Israel’s affliction were deep and prolonged, reflecting generations of hardship under hostile powers. Yet the psalm does not end with the oppressors’ victory; God preserves His people and will bring judgment on those who oppose Him.

Job 31:38 if my land cries out against me and its furrows weep…
Hos 10:13 You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice;…
2Sa 12:31 David brought out the people who were there…

The LORD is righteous;

God’s character is wholly just and faithful. Though Israel had suffered severe oppression, the LORD had not abandoned His covenant people or acted unjustly toward them. His righteousness ensures that He judges the wicked and preserves those who belong to Him.

Psa 11:7 For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice.…
Psa 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all His ways…
Dan 9:14 Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store……

He has cut me from the cords of the wicked.

The wicked had sought to bind and enslave Israel through repeated affliction, but God broke their power. The image reflects actual deliverance from hostile enemies and points to the LORD’s continuing authority over those who oppose His people.

Isa 58:6 Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains…
Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Psa 116:16 Truly, O LORD, I am Your servant; I am Your servant…

May all who hate Zion

Zion, Jerusalem, was the site of the Temple and the center of Israel’s covenant worship. Those who hated Zion opposed not merely the city but the God who had chosen it and the people He had established there. Israel’s history included repeated assaults from surrounding nations seeking to weaken or destroy her.

Mic 4:11-12 But now many nations have assembled against you,…
Psa 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom on the day…
Isa 60:14 The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you;…

be turned back in shame.

The psalmist asks God to frustrate such enemies, causing their attacks to fail, their retreat to end in military defeat, and their hostility to result in public disgrace. Their defeat would demonstrate that opposition to God’s purposes and His people does not prevail.

Psa 70:2 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;…
Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…
Psa 6:10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;…

May they be like grass on the rooftops,

Flat roofs in Israel were often covered with packed earth, where seeds could sprout after rain. Yet the thin soil and heat left such growth exposed and short-lived. The psalmist asks that those who hate Zion prove equally unstable, unable to establish lasting strength or success.

2Ki 19:26 Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power…
Isa 37:27 Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power…
Psa 37:2 For they wither quickly like grass and wilt…

which withers before it can grow,

Rooftop grass dries up before it can mature or be harvested. So the enemies of God’s people may appear briefly, but their opposition will fail and come to nothing under God’s judgment.

Job 8:12 While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up…
Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
Psa 90:5-6 You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like…

unable to fill the hands of the reaper,

The enemies of Zion are compared to stunted grass that withers before it can be harvested. Their apparent strength produces no lasting fruit, and their plans come to nothing under God’s judgment.

Jer 9:22 Declare that this is what the LORD says: “The corpses of men…
Isa 17:5 as the reaper gathers the standing grain…

or the arms of the binder of sheaves.

No sheaves are gathered because there is no mature crop. The image portrays the complete failure of those who oppose God’s people: they leave behind neither abundance nor blessing.

Gen 37:7 We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, …
Psa 126:6 He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed,…
Mic 4:12 But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD…

May none who pass by say to them,

The ruined oppressors are denied the customary words of goodwill offered by travelers and workers. Their downfall receives no sympathy because they have persistently afflicted God’s people.

Mat 27:39 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him,…
Mrk 15:29 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him,…
Lam 2:15 All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn.…

“The blessing of the LORD be on you;

Such a blessing expressed a desire for the LORD’s favor, protection, and prosperity. Those who set themselves against Israel have placed themselves under God’s judgment rather than His favor.

Psa 115:15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven…
Psa 134:3 May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth…
Rut 2:4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem…

we bless you in the name of the LORD.”

No one invokes the LORD’s name on behalf of these enemies. The closing image contrasts the security of those who belong to the LORD with the shame and barrenness of those who oppose Him.

2Sa 6:18 When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings…
1Ch 16:2 When David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings…
Deu 10:8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi…
