1 Early in the morning all the chief priests and the leaders of the people decided to execute Jesus. When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.

5 So he threw the money into the temple, went away, and hanged himself. And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests took the money and said, |It's not right to put it into the temple treasury, because it's blood money.| But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
7 So they decided to use it to buy a potter's field for the burial of strangers. So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.

16 At that time there was a well-known prisoner by the name of Barabbas. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas.
17 So when the people gathered, Pilate asked them, |Which man do you want me to free for you? Do you want me to free Barabbas or Jesus, who is called Christ?| So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”
18 Pilate knew that they had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous. For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was judging the case, his wife sent him a message. It said, |Leave that innocent man alone. I've been very upset today because of a dream I had about him.| Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and leaders persuaded the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus. Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, |Which of the two do you want me to free for you?| They said, |Barabbas.| The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered.
22 Pilate asked them, |Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?| |He should be crucified!| they all said. Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 Pilate asked, |Why? What has he done wrong?| But they began to shout loudly, |He should be crucified!| And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 Pilate saw that he was not getting anywhere. Instead, a riot was breaking out. So Pilate took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. He said, |I won't be guilty of killing this man. Do what you want!| So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
25 All the people answered, |The responsibility for killing him will rest on us and our children.| And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”
26 Then Pilate freed Barabbas for the people. But he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified. Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the palace and gathered the whole troop around him. 46 About three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, |Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?| which means, |My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?| And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
47 When some of the people standing there heard him say that, they said, |He's calling Elijah.| And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 One of the men ran at once, took a sponge, and soaked it in some vinegar. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
49 The others said, |Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah comes to save him.| But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 Then Jesus loudly cried out once again and gave up his life. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

65 Pilate told them, |You have the soldiers you want for guard duty. Go and make the tomb as secure as you know how.| Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”
